book The Call of the Wild: A Naturalistic Romance, The book deals less with the
concept of evolution than with that of devolution (Courbin pg 57). London asks us
to believe that happily domesticated farm dog, Buck, can not only survive life as a
sled dog in the Yukon, but can become completely in tune with his primitive inner
self, and ultimately thrive as a leader of a wolf pack. The narration allows us to see
inside of Buck s mind, to share with him his visions, and to hear with him the call
of the wild. A reoccurring theme in The Call of the Wild is Buck s visons of a
primitive version of himself with a hairy ape like man. The third person, limited
omniscient narratorcan show the world around Buck, but can also go inside of Buck
s mind, giving us the perfect viewpoint to experience these visons with him, without
limiting us the way we would be if the narrator was Buck himself, or unable to share
in the visons at all if the narrator was one of the humans around him. These visons

Short story, Treasure State by Tin House, is full of reflection, guilt, and loneliness.
Mainly, the story entails the journey of two brothers fleeing their hometown after
their incarcerated father, Old Guy, is granted mercy due to his terminal cancer to
return home. The brothers John and Daniel, would rather leave than to live with Old
Man so they set their eyes on the treasure state, Montana. The journey is documented
by eventful destinations and fleeing of the past while doing what is necessary to get
by. While it is easy to see the main themes, there are a couple of hidden gems within
some underrepresented characters and glanced over scenes.
At these destinations, the boys rob the dead, to trade off treasures for money for
the trip. Before leaving their home town, the brothers stop to eat at a diner full of
senior citizens. Here, is where John comes up with the idea to steal from funerals
and homes of the dead. What I found intriguing, is figuring out where the idea for
robbery of the specific group came from. Was it because the diner was full of older
human beings? Was It due to their father s terminal cancer? Maybe it was the fact that
they could be missed when they hit? An ambiguous series of events that I feel holds
some importance to the understanding of the story.
The first place the boys hit, was in a town called Oscarville. There, they robbed their
first funeral. They were semi caught by a grieving family member who invited the
burglar boys into the home.

The book The Scarlet Pimpernel immediately led into action that held you at the
edge of your seat, restlessly chewing your nails. It started by explaining the
complexity of escaping from France during the French Revolution that began in
1789, and told of the mysterious Scarlet Pimpernel that snuck Aristocrats out of the
country. The story follows the tale of Mrs. Marguerite Blakeney, wife of wealthy Sir
Percy Blakeney. Marguerite is enveloped in a troublesome issue of protecting her
brother, who is aiding the Scarlet Pimpernel, or to protect the identity of the Scarlet
Pimpernel, or which she herself does not know. Though the idea of a mysterious
brave man strikes a chord in Marguerite s young, loving heart, she chooses to
protect her brother and discovers information of who the Scarlet Pimpernel may

discovering that Sir Percy himself is the Scarlet Pimpernel, Marguerite realizes
with growing dread that she has quite possibly doomed her husband to a tragic
death as now the french government was on his tail. She acquires the help of one
of Scarlet Pimpernel s nine teen members and sets sail for France in a desperate
attempt to save her husband and her brother. This being the main summary of the

In criminal cases an individual accused of a serious crime is rarely desirous of
