Essay about Effect of Geography on English Colonies in...
A.P US History The Effect Of Geography On English Colonies The New England, Middle and
Southern colonies were all English ruled, but yet very different. Among their distinctions, was the
geography which played an important role in shaping these colonies. New England attracted Puritan
farmers who wanted to separate from the Catholic Church. But because of the bone dry soil in the
North, these colonists found they couldn't continue with their traditional ways of farming. However,
with the immense amounts of water that surrounded them, they found that they could fish and trade.
The Middle colonies on the other, hand had a moderate amount of everything. The fertile soil and

Therefore, because life expectancy was longer than that of the South enabling the growth of large
families. Adults and children alike were expected to work, slave labor was not needed on the small
farms in New England. Each family farmed enough to provide for their family. When indentured
servants did come over to New England, they found that land was very dear. Those wanting to work
in exchange for land found that they needed to go further south. Consequently, New England had the
least ethnically mixed population of all the regions. The need for extensive travel was limited in the
North. The reason for this was because the rivers were short and hard to negotiate. Therefore
transportation by means of water was extremely difficult. The colonists found it proved to be more
economical to settle close to one another. The northerners did make an effort to enrich their lifestyle
by clearing forests for livestock .However this proved to be detrimental as the impact of cattle and
other livestock over grazed the land which lead to extensive erosion and flooding. One positive
aspect the resulted from the clearing of the land was the realization of the voluminous amounts of
lumber that could be used for shipbuilding and exportation. The small towns in New England were
tightly built settlements that centered around the churches and schools. Strong family units were the
building block of each town. Towns that housed

Comparing Central Minnesota 's City And Rural Life
Just Over an Hour Away
The city of Minneapolis, Minnesota is booming with life! With its convention center, night life
noise, busy highways, advertised attractions, and sports related events, the city life expectations
satisfy both visitors and residents. It is typical to assume that the high–end activities and busy
nightlife attract political feuds and noise because they are located in the city. Nonetheless, this is not
the case for some of Central Minnesota's rural life found in places such as Riverview, Sterns County,
Baker Township, and parts of Saint Cloud. So, comparing Central Minnesota's city and rural life,
where are peace and beauty located?
There is a continuous political struggle between the acceptance of dairy farm growth and feedlot
growth midst some of the family owned businesses in the rural areas. Insomuch, the largest milk
producer wanted to invest about 55 million into a dairy feedlot last year, but regulators proposed
environmental concerns such as nitrate pollution in the water, manure smell, and large–scale
confinement of farm animals claiming it interferes with the beautiful side of country living. This
family is known to have over 35,000 dairy cows currently working up to 22 hours a day giving them
the competitive edge. Although this may appear somewhat monopolistic, it does provide
employment opportunities for many as well as financial economic development for the entire State
of Minnesota.
Another spectacular main event in rural Minnesota is

Personal Narrative: My First Immigration To Canada
It was the start of the 1900's, and Canada was looking for people to immigrate there. There were
posters posted in Europe; everywhere you went there were advertisements endorsing immigration to
Canada. My parents one day came home and looked over it. It promoted that anyone who was
willing to settle in the Prairies would be given 169 acres of land. They wanted people to immigrate
to the western part of Canada because by populating the land, it would slim the opportunity for
America to invade the Prairies. This sounded like a tremendous idea. My dad used to work at a
factory, but unfortunately he just lost his job to a machine. This placed my family in an awful
position. At that time I was about four years old. They had to provide for my two older brothers and

Soon we were going to be evicted from our home because we could not pay the mortgage. I was
really worried about my family and what we were going to do. I remember I can hear my parents
discussing on how they should consider going. In the end, they decided that even though it was a
risky move, we were going to take the chance and go. We travelled there by boat and it was a long
journey. I found out that many people were going to immigrate there because many people lost their
jobs and they wanted a better future. My family and I arrived and it was really hard to have a farm,
but we worked hard and made it happen. Our farm was only some of the few farms that survived the
year. With that my family expanded and I got twin brothers. The land was fertile and we were able
to grow food for Canadians to consume and to be sold for profit. With the immigration to the
Prairies the west became a market for eastern Canada's products and many of the railroad companies
thrived with the increase of trade. Immigration allowed Canada to prosper and boost its

The Color Red in Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye Essay
As once said by Socrates, a famous Greek philosopher, "The unexamined life is not worth living."
He believes people should read between the lines, and in the case of books, delve into what the
author is trying to say by using symbols and imagery. To someone who does not examine the book,
The Catcher in the Rye, it may seem to be about a "messed up" teenager who wanders around town
and doesn't care about life. But when a range of ______ are explored, one will find that this book
has common themes of innocence, changing, growing up and also death. It is discovered in various

In the book, he makes two trips to the museum, but the first time he doesn't go in. The second time
he seems to be making a transition from youth to adulthood. He shows two children around and
enjoys the museum in a new way. This shows that he is maturing and accepting change.
______. His red hunting hat is symbolic of many things. He wears it during important times such as
writing the composition about Allie's baseball glove, yet he seems to be embarrassed to wear it in
public. "I took my old hunting hat out... and put it on. I knew I wouldn't meet anybody that knew
me" (122). Even though he lacks confidence to wear it frequently, it becomes a part of how he sees
himself. He acknowledges that it's "corny" but he personally likes how it looks; it is a symbol of his
uniqueness and desire to be different. The red color of the hat is also noteworthy, the same as Allie
and Phoebe's hair. He may associate 'red' with purity and innocence those characters represent and
wears it as a connection to them.
Holden is very inquisitive about where the ducks in Central Park go in the winter. His questioning
the cab drivers of this shows a youthful willingness in him to discover what he is curious about.
"You know those ducks in that lagoon right near Central Park South? That little lake? By any
chance, do you happen to know where they go, the ducks, when it gets all frozen over? Do you
happen to know, by any chance?" (60) The cab drivers give mostly thoughtless

Cultural Uniqueness Within the Agricultural Community
Running Head: CULTURAL UNIQUENESS OF THE AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY.
Identifying and exploring cultural uniqueness within the agricultural community of the Central
Valley, California. Jennifer D. Andrew Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary Abstract The central valley
of California stretches as far north as Sacramento and south all the way to Bakersfield– from Shasta
County to Kern County. It is some 450 miles long and typically 40 to 60 miles wide. It encompasses
18 counties with a total of over five million people and over 42,000 square miles––one–sixth of the
population and more than two–fifths of the land area of the state. The farmers come from many
different ethnic groups, and can be found all over the world. In the period between 166 and 1920,
between the Civil War and World War I, California became and integrated part of the expanding
United States and the construction and completion of the transcontinental railroad. This analysis will
look at some of the unique cultural features that are part of this area. It was found that many of the
rural small–scale farms are coming under increased social and economic pressures that can disrupt
family life in many instances. There are forms of various Christian counseling that can help these
families cope with some of the pressures they are facing. Contents Abstract 2 1. Introduction 5 1.1

South Sudan Sustainability
This report will seek to analyse food production sustainability in South Sudan by considering the
impact of population, weather, and trade and to investigate recommendations to improve South
Sudan's food production. South Sudan is a land locked country located in northeastern Africa. South
Sudan is bordered on the north by Sudan; on the east by Ethiopia; on the south by Kenya, Uganda,
and the Democratic Republic of the Congo; and on the west by the Central African Republic (see
Figure 1 below). The coordinates of Juba, South Sudan's capital city, are 4.8500° N, 31.6000° E. As

Over 90% of South Sudanese households depend on crop farming, livestock, fishing or forestry for
their livelihoods; but productivity across all these sectors is minimal. The majority of those people
have small land–holder, family owned farms producing staple crops or growing cattle. Food cannot
be grown all year round, as agricultural production depends on the availability of water. The main
agricultural products are: sorghum, maize, rice, millet, wheat, gum arabic, sugarcane, mangoes,
papayas, bananas, sweet potatoes sunflower, cotton, sesame, cassava, beans and peanuts; and cattle
and sheep. Food production majorly hampered by the rainfall, civil war, lack of equipment and pest

Pesticides In America Essay
Humans have a tendency to afflict conflict and havok away from their own living quarters in order
to reduce casualties in whatever the conflict may be so that their homeland remains pure and
untouched. Given that America has one of strictest health and clean up regulations in the world they
tend to follow the Chinese proverb: "the frog does not drink from the pond in which it lives." The
pond that is being talked about here is a nation's natural resources that are necessary for survival.
Instead of ravaging their own land and extract it, America tends to seek out other countries that are
able to perform methods of growing crops that would otherwise be illegal in America. Because of
America's role in the world, they are able to expose other countries to ravage their own resources
instead of their own. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As it happens, the United States has a 18–47% import on their fruits and vegetables from primarily
Central and South American countries. In these countries such as Costa Rica and Honduras many of
the pesticides that are illegal in the United States are used heavily there. Chlorpyrifos is a pesticide
used for bananas that are shipped to the United States by the trillions. It has been known to "harm
workers, communities and the environment (Environmental Working Group's)." Many children were
subject to mental retardation and decreased brain function because of the banana farms. This is one
example of a pesticide that the United States is indirectly using through Costa Rica in order to avoid
the environmental costs of chlorpyrifos on the people and the land. But the problem is not with
Costa Rica or the other Central American countries, it's that we are perfectly capable of growing

didn't want to go to war or enter the military service because of many different reasons and beliefs
they had also some democrats that wanted peace and to reunite the states through negotiation rather
than force. 2. Attrition, the wearing down of one side by the other through exhaustion of soldiers and
resources, played a critical role as the war dragged on. The north, with its large population, could
replace its troops much more easily than the south. 3. The confederate constitution emphasized
states' rights and limited the central government's power. This commitment to states' rights often
interfered with Davis's ability to conduct the war. Although many southern leaders supported the
war, some opposed Jefferson Davis when he supported conscription and established martials law
early in 1862. 4.The north had a strong naval tradition. More than three–fourths of the united states
navy's officers came from the north. Also most of the navy's warships and all but two of the nation's
shipyards remained under union control. The north also had several economic advantages. The north
had a larger population, giving it an advantage in raising an army and in supporting the war effort.
In addition, in 1860 the north produced almost 90 percent of total manufacturing weapons and
equipment. The north also had more railroad lines to enable the movement of armies and supplies.

Summary Of Neil Foley's The White Scourge
Neil Foley, the author of The White Scourge: Mexicans, Blacks, and Poor Whites in Texas Cotton
Culture, was growing up in Alexandria, Virginia. A family of eight children whom father was a
Spanish–speaking, second generation Irishman and mother who was a pure Mexican. Foley
graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master of Arts Degree and attained a PH.D. in
American Culture in 1990. He lives with his wife and two children. In this book, Foley uses a vast
amount of archived histories as well as verbal materials to portray the construction and re–
construction of whiteness and the its connection of whiteness rising to power. Narrowing it down to
focus on a specific area, which is the cotton culture in central Texas, Foley breaks down whiteness
through a through analysis of race, class, gender. A fascinating aspect of this book is the differences
mentioned towards whiteness and the various ethno–racial classes and their tense relations to
develop a meaningful existence amongst one another. This book depicts the pathology of a racial
system that over and over again produces material hardship and lack of spirit. The psychology used,

Differences Of The Maya, The Aztec, And Inca
Everyone's way of life is different from the other. Different people have different things to do. There
are three civilizations who are quite contrasting from each other. These groups are called the Maya,
the Aztec, and the Inca. they lived in the pre–columbian age. A huge part of their lives was farming.
The importance of farming meant being able to feed your family and your people. Besides their
many differences, they all have some things in common. The Mayan civilization started in 1200 b.c.

landscapes in such diverse settings as plains, mountains, deserts, and tropical jungle. (Andrew

very rough and harsh. This included the Andes mountains. It runs along the western side of South
America. It is among the longest mountain ranges in the world. It's huge terrain includes having
glaciers, volcanoes, grasslands, and deserts. They some of the tallest, starkest mountains in the
world. Yet the Incas, somehow managed to overcome the challenges it threw at them. They built
cisterns and irrigation canals that snaked and angled down and around the mountains. They also
managed to cut terraces into the hillsides, progressively steeper, from the valleys up the slopes. The
system of terraces covered about a million hectares throughout Peru and fed the vast empire. They
developed resilient breeds of crops such as potatoes, quinoa and corn (Cynthia Graber, September 6,

The American War : The Causes Of The American Civil War
Wars are never simple, nor are their causes. Many other factors that have contributed to the war are
fundamental to understanding the American past.Northern and southern economies has led to civil
war. The industrial revolution in the north, during the first decades of the nineteenth century, caused
a machine in the era of the economy depended on wage–earners and not slaves.
At the same time, the hotter southern states continued to rely on slaves for its agricultural economy
and cotton production. Southerners made big profits from cotton and slaves and fought a war to
keep them. Northerners do not need slaves for their economy and have waged war to free them
everything was tied to the economic difference and wetted by cotton.
Agricultural economics is certainly one of the causes of the civil war, but not the only one.
So what began the civil war a war that divided the nation, destroyed cultures, cities and railway
lines, and claimed 630,000 lives? Numerous factors pushed the nation into chaos in 1861. The main
political causes include the slow collapse of the Whig party, the founding of the Republican Party
and, above all, the election of Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860.
Religious opposition to slavery has increased, supported by ministers and abolitionists like William
Lloyd Garrison. The geographical conflict over the extension of slavery in the western territories
and the States–zones without an industrial economy and a farm economy grew. And political

Weaknesses for ODI chicken lenses include limited market with a very slow increase, spread all
over US, need for regional offices, big specialized sales force and technicals available all over US,
potential increase of lenses, injection molds, shipping, boxes costs, advertising (more than
forecasted), risk of R&D failure in developing new products, inertia of farmers, their capacity to
understand advantages and to purchase ODI product. Product cannot be reused.
Opportunities include huge market, no competition for at least three years, potential huge margin,
good marketing strategy.
Threats include farmers reluctance, competition, non–adequate pricing strategy, low trained
salesforce and technicals, higher costs then forecasted.
Market Segmentation
There is substantial evidence in the case to suggest that ODI should segment the market based on
flock size of the farms (small farms, medium farms, large farms with a clear tendency for
concentration) and focus their marketing and sales strategy towards farms with more than 10,000
birds. As illustrated in Exhibit 4 of the case study, number of chicken farms with flock size less than
10,000 has vastly shrunk between 1964 and 1969. This trend

While urban farms bring together communities and unites them to fight a common enemy, urban

They were both fighting for the use of public land and resources. In the case of the South Central
Farmers, the city of Los Angeles made a backroom deal with Horwitz to sell the land for five
million dollars. A sale like this should be public record and the community should be aware of the
transaction. Likewise, in the case of the Occupy movement, public land bequeathed to public
university for the sole purpose of agriculture, was being evaluated for development plans, against
the public's wishes. Both of these gardens were community centers, fostering growth and learning.
Here, communities were able to harbor life together and feel hopeful, especially poorer communities
where these gardens served as secure sources of food. Both movements were up against rich and
powerful entities that appeared to want to squash their movement out of spite. In the case of the the
South Central Farmers, Horwitz refused to sell them the land, despite the fact that they secured the
funds to purchase it. He states that the community was not grateful for having used the land for free
all these years. While the University of California reached an agreement deal with the Occupy

What Led To The Civil War Essay
The Confederate States of America consisted of eleven Southern states that seceded from the Union
in 1860 and 1861 to establish a new nation. In 1860, seven states of the Deep South–Alabama,
Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi South Carolina and Texas seceded because they thought the
election of Abraham Lincoln would threaten their livelihood by abolishing slavery. Later, four states
of the Upper South–Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia joined them. The CSA, led
by Jefferson Davis, quite simply wanted to keep the Deep South and the Upper South enslaved. The
unspoken goal of secession was to ensure that 'all men were not created equal'. This secession led to
the American Civil War–a war fought between Northern and Southern states. The southern states
wanted to protect the institution of slavery. Northern states, led by Abraham Lincoln, believed that
slavery was immoral and wrong.

How Is Lucy Presented In To Kill A Mockingbird
A response to Guilt
John Maxwell Coetzee's novel showed that Lucy's rape was not a gendered crime, instead, was
considered a race and/or class crime. David Lurie and Lucie Lurie represent South Africa's white
minority, that being so, what happened to her represents the punishment to South Africa's white
community (this can be well corroborate in the text), and Lucie's decision to not report the rape and
remain on the farm represents one of the many novel's reposes to guilt.
The farm attack and the rape of Lucy is the most influential scene in the whole book. Everything
was marked up by one specific event. Wyk M. Smith, from Rhodes University, Institute for the

American Culture, English And American Literature, And...
Holding degrees in American Culture, English and American Literature, and English, Dr. Neil Foley
specializes in the evolving components of race and social identity in what he calls the Borderlands:
Mexico and the American West. The White Scourge: Mexicans, Blacks, and Poor Whites in Texas
Cotton Culture bridges the gap between the narratives of two Borderlands histories, that of African–
Americans and southern history, and that of Mexican–Americans and southwestern history. Looking
at Texas, and specifically the area from Dallas in the north, Corpus Christi in the south, San Antonio
in the west, and Houston in the east, Foley analyzes how Mexicans, blacks, and poor whites
maneuvered and dealt with the racial space in this Borderlands province of cotton culture during the
first half of the twentieth century. To Foley, this area of central Texas provides an exceptional
example of Borderlands interactions because of the nature of cotton culture as compared to
plantation farming in other parts of the South. Cotton farming in central Texas relied on mostly
white share tenants, and mostly black or Mexican sharecroppers. Migrant Mexican labor was also
used to harvest crops. These three standards produced complex configurations as Mexicans began
competing with blacks for more work and both competed with whites for tenancy. Although a
southern state, Foley considers Texas "the west" of "the south." Exposed to relationships between
blacks and whites, The White Scourge begins with

The Goulburn Valley: Where Is It?
The Goulburn Valley
Where is it?
The Goulburn Valley is situated to the north of the state of Victoria, just above the Melbourne
Region.
Biomes
A biome is a large geographical area of distinctive plant and animal groups, which are adapted to
that particular environment. The climate and geography of a region determines what type of biome
can exist in that region. Major biomes include deserts, forests, grasslands, tundra, and several types
of aquatic environment. As can see on the topography map, The Goulburn has two Biomes:–
1. Grassland in central, northern, west and south–west of the region and 2. Temperate forest in the
south–east.
What is grown in the Goulburn.
This region is known for the dairy; about 13% of Australians milk comes from The Goulburn Valley.
There are nearly 3,000 commercial dairy farms in the Goulburn Region, with 12 factories receiving
milk in the area. Goulburn region dairy products include milk, butter, cheeses, yoghurt, and dried
milk products. Same other product grown are Apples, apricots, peaches, pears, plums, nectarines,
kiwi fruit, oranges, lemons, limes and cherries. Fruit is a big intrust bring a profit of 335m a year for

Agriculture in the Goulburn
Many of the farming methods in this region are from the British and some have being added over
time. This region was filled with trees and native wild life but when the white came a lot of the land
was cleared and made farms or for grazing animals. There are about 820

Taking a Look at Environmental Racism
Did you know that 35 out of 57 waste sites in the eastern part of Los Angeles were located in zip
codes with at least half the population consisting of Latinos? (Pulido 21) This is a direct and
apparent representation of environmental racism in our country. In particular, its existence could be
closely observed in the recent dispute of an urban farmland in South Central Los Angeles. Frankly,
environmental racism had little effect on the actual dissolution of the South Central farm, as it was
an issue of property rights. Instead, environmental racism played a significant role in the
confrontation process that led to the closure by excluding minority groups, especially Latinos, from
decision processes and obstructing their effort to conserve the farmland.
Twenty–five years ago, the city of Los Angeles obtained the South Central farmland under eminent
domain with the intention of building a waste incinerator. While this project failed to proceed, 400
community members were given the permission to farm the land. It provided a lot of support to the
community, which is inhabited mostly by low–income minorities. While aiding the farmers
themselves, it also brought monetary and psychological benefits to the neighborhood. Suing the city
for not utilizing the land as a public good, Ralph Horowitz, the original owner, successfully
recouped the property in 2006, which threatened the existence of the garden. Farmers were
forcefully moved out of the property and the South Central Farm

China, South Korea And Japan
China, South Korea and Japan are three countries which represent successful policies in reversing
their economy from central to advanced in a short period of time. These countries are smaller pieces
of a puzzle and they compete with the rest of Asia by forming a strong picture. After participating in
wars like WWII and the Korean War, China, South Korea, and Japan make a very powerful
triangular force that stands for change and the development of a new policy in economy, society and
governments. The transformation of these countries to the open world context has several reasons
that consist to: transform the financial system to an open economy, shut down a very large number
of loss making state enterprises, and strengthen the weak position of government. The first reason
has a connection with the financial system reform that has been followed by good case open door

clear hierarchy, they will peck the one did not obey the rules, which is called cannibalism, causing
death. ODI's contact lens for chicken could efficiently reduce this behavior through reducing their

As the only company in current industry, ODI faces a problem about future marketing, including
customer segmentation, locations of regional offices, pricing policy and the strategy of convincing
farmers to use the new product.
Based on the case, the target customer should be the farms having flock size over 50,000 and the

From the analysis above, the target consumers of ODI should be medium and large farms.
Marketing Analysis
Locations of Regional Offices
According to Exhibit 3, California and South Atlantic are the top two areas that have significant
difference in the number of farms having flock size over 50,000. Since these two locations contain
about 45% of farm with flock size between 50,000 and 99,000 and about 46% of farms with flock
size 100,000 and over, regional offices should be set and more selling effort should be invested. The
specific numbers are as following: California South Atlantic Total Total Number of Farms
Percentage in Total
Flock size 50,000–99,000 114 168 282 631 45%
Flock size 100,000 and over 87 70 157 345 46%
(Source: Exhibit 3)
Since four to five regional offices should be set, the other locations should be Middle Atlantic and
West South Central. The specific numbers are as following: Middle Atlantic West South Central
Total Total Number of Farms Percentage in Total
Flock size 50,000–99,000 55 77 132 631 21%
Flock size 100,000 and over 29 42 71 345 21%
(Source: Exhibit 3)
Since less farms than California and South Atlantic' exist in these two areas, selling efforts could be
invest less, either.

Why the South Lost the Civil War
The Civil War was not the defeat of a hopeless rebellion. The Confederates had legitimate
opportunity to win independence, but they failed to capitalize on it. The South's chances at victory
were not remote; rather they could expect to win. The ultimate cause of the South's failure was a
lack of aggression in all aspects. The two times the Confederates attacked the North at Antietam and
Gettysburg, the results were catastrophic because of a lack of strategy. An offensive plan of war does
not necessarily mean charging right at an opponent, who in this case had more than three times the
number of men as the Confederates. Rather, an effective form of offense would be to attack northern
factories, farms, and cities. This would damage the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the Border States felt they would be safe staying in the Union while the confederates
fought a destructive war. The confederacy had the ability to persuade these states to secede in 1861
when President Lincoln ordered supplies to be brought to Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The north
claimed they just wanted to keep the men in the fort alive, but there actions were provocative.
Foolishly, the confederates fell for their plan and fired upon the fort. This made the South look like
the aggressors in the war rather than the north, and persuaded the Border States not to secede as they
felt their lifestyle was not going to be ruined by the north. If the South avoided this unnecessary
conflict and instead waited for the north to attack first, it would confirm that the North wanted the
confederates to succumb to their ideals and change their society to conform to their standards. The
South almost certainly won if they had the Border States on their side. If acquired, they would
double the confederates' manufacturing and increase the white population by forty–five percent. The
states also had a large supply of grain and edible goods, which the rest of the cotton–focused south
lacked. Missouri and Maryland were especially important for their strategic locations. Missouri
would protect the Mississippi River, while Maryland surrounded the Union's capital in Washington
D.C. on three sides. Due to the South's weak central government, some might

This could mean more than just a barrier from rain, but maybe a barrier from adulthood. The "Little
Shirley beans record" symbolizes not only Holden's love for Phoebe but also the innocence that
holden can't let go. "There was a record I wanted to get Phoebe called "Little Shirley Beans" It was
a very hard record to get. It was about a little girl that wouldn't leave her house because of her front
teeth and she was ashamed to" Throughout the book it has been hard for holden to go out of his way
for anyone, especially if it happens to be a tough challenge. Holden is using time, effort, and money
to track down this record for his little sister. Holden chooses to go to the park in central park to
watch the wildlife. Introduce quote "Then something terrible happened, just as i got to the park. I
dropped old phoebe's record, It broke into about fifty pieces. It was in a big envelope and all but it
broke anyway." Holden wanted the record because it was a means to represent holden's innocence.
The girl in the record that was too scared to leave her house could symbolize holden and his fear to
confront adulthood. When the record broke displayed holden losing his innocence. The ducks in the
pond at Central Park that leave in the winter represent that not everything in life is permanent. Also,

Regionalism In The Return By W. B. Yeats And Dylan Thomas...
Introduction If Southern writers deny their inner beings, the South can be only an exporter of raw
materials, perhaps an exporter of man power, and a consumer of imported cultural products. It will
cease to export them. In the creative sense it will be numb and sterile. During the 1920s and 1930s,
regionalism played an important part in American art. Throughout the English speaking world, the
minority culture of the province was reflecting and criticizing on the dominant culture in society.
The Ireland created by W.B. Yeats and Dylan Thomas' Wales were examples of regionalism in the
British Empire. In America, regionalism arose in New England, the Midwest and the South.

The Importance Of Food During The American Civil War
The American Civil War (1861–1865) resulted from the growing tension between the Northern and

Geographically, ODI should focus on the Pacific region, starting with California and Oregon
because that¡¦s where ODI¡¦s lens has been tested on a number of farms with satisfactory results.
Acquiring 20 farms in just two Southern California counties can give them an impressive start with
a market penetration rate of 7% in the first year. As they acquire farms in California, ODI should
extend their operations to North Carolina and Georgia which along with California account for 25%
of the nation¡¦s chickens. Eventually ODI should spread their regional offices to serve chicken
farmers all over the country.
ODI Managers believe direct sales to chicken farms are the best answer. Salesforce will promote the
product targeting first ¡§opinion leaders¡¨ from farms with more than 10,000 chickens, who tend to
be somewhat less quick to adopt, but are more likely followed by others. One strategy for ODI is to
identify the farmers who are perceived as opinion leaders.
Value to Farmers
Contact lenses from ODI restrict the vision for the birds which completely changes their behavior.
This method of reducing cannibalization is much more effective than debeaking and has huge
economic benefits for the farmers. The benefits for ODI lens are:

Social Differences Between North And South States
One nation. Two distinct regions. The United States in the early 1800's distinguished the North and
the South. These two parts of the country had differences from social and political structures, to
political views, geography and daily attitudes which eventually led to vastly differently lifestyles.
Certain components strengthened relations and others crumbled them.
A major difference between the North and the South was slavery. A turning point in history, slavery
was essential in the growth and progression of America. While the North had nearly abolished it,
only 9% of the South's African American population was free. The industrialization in the North
attracted immigrants which caused a sharp population increase. The plantations in the South
appealed those wanting to be wealthy at the expense of slaves. At the bottom of the social ladder,

While the North encouraged industrialization, the South thrived from agriculture. At its base, both
regions used farming and trade. However, the North, engaged in international trade and small family
farms, did not rely on farming as a source of significant income. The South, on the other hand, used
trade with England as a way to make money. With extensive farming and enough slaves to keep the
textile market flourishing, the southern economy was contingent upon agriculture. This further
widened the separation between the North and the South.
Political identities were where the North and South truly showed a clear division. In the early
1800's, most citizens of the North agreed with the Republican party while the Southerners leaned
more heavily towards the Democrats. These parties sectionalized the way of living between the two
regions and influenced political decisions made by both sides. The North wanted a stronger central
government as opposed to the South who wanted more powerful individual state

Puppy Farming In Australia
Across Australia, many dogs are victims to cruel treatment and conditions from dog breeders in
facilities known as puppy farms. Puppy farms, also called puppy mills and puppy factories, are
intensive breeding businesses whose facilities fail to meet the behavioural, social and/or
psychological needs of the dogs which occupy the puppy farm.
Extreme confinement, inadequate veterinary care, unhygienic living conditions, small cages and
overcrowded housing are some of the many flaws puppy farms may contain. Many dogs develop
health issues with some suffering with diseases and acute and chronic conditions and bitches are
often treated as 'breeding machines,' constantly producing litters of puppies for profit.
According to the Queensland government, factors contributing to the standard of an animal's welfare

The Story Behind The War
The Story Behind the War
By
Tiana Thibeault
Traditionally, students have been taught that differences between northern and southern economies
caused the Civil War. The industrial revolution in the North, during the first few decades of the 19th
century, brought about an economy that revolved around a machine age which relied on wage
laborers, not slaves. At the same time, the warmer Southern states continued to rely on slaves for
their farming economy and cotton production. Southerners made huge profits from cotton and slaves
and fought a war to maintain them. Northerners did not need slaves to establish or maintain their
economy and fought a war to free them. Everything else, we are led to believe, was tied to that
economic difference that was focused on cotton.
The economy which was tied to agriculture was certainly one cause of the Civil War, but not the
only one. Wars are never simple and neither are their causes. Research shows there are other factors
that helped bring about the war which are central to a deeper understanding of America 's past.
So what did start the Civil War–a war that divided the nation, destroyed crops, cities, and railroad
lines, and claimed 630,000 lives? Many factors threw the nation into chaos in 1861. Key political
issues at the time include the slow destruction of the Whig Party, the founding of the Republican
Party, and, most important, the election of Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860.
Religious opponents to slavery increased in number

innovation or new technology. For example, the invention of railroad and creation of steam
machines increase the effectiveness of transportation and decrease the time it takes to deliver goods

Political, Political And Military Advantages Of The Civil War
Tayler Burrell
History
12 December 2017 Civil War: Union Military Advantages The civil war, fought from 1861–1865,
was started after seven southern slave states declared their secession and formed the Confederate
states. The Union had many advantages that, ultimately, led them to victory. The had many political,
economic, and military benefits that aided them in their victory. The Union was held by a strong
central government. A strong central government is defined as a government that's able to force the
states and municipalities to follow the central government's laws. Abe Lincoln did this by not letting
the surrounding southern states to secede and simply ignored that they had "succeeded". When

This illegally increased the size of the army, which was also a power only reserved for the Congress,
and authorized illegal voting methods for the Union border states. Congress had generally supported
all of these decisions, but Lincoln further justified them by claiming that desperate times called for
the measures he took.He also later promised to obey the Constitution once the war was over.
Economically the Union was very strong and greatly outweighed the South. President Lincoln, as
the war had begun, quickly declared a blockade, as described earlier, against the main Confederate
ports. This was supposed to be under an international treaty, that hadn't been signed yet, which had
created the controversial political issues for Lincoln. Fortunate enough for the Union, when war
broke out the United States Navy was small like it's army, and its ships were scattered around the
oceans. Of the American ships that were in surrounding waters, ten were partially destroyed or
destroyed to prevent them from going to the Confederates when Virginia seceded. If they did this
would have taken the Norfolk naval base with it.
Another Economical advantage the Union had was that Northern Republicans could pass higher
tariffs, write a wide variety of needed reform bills, build the national economy, and strengthen the
federal government because there were no conservative Southerners. Countless different currencies

The White Scourge, By Neil Foley
The White Scourge: Mexicans, Blacks, and Poor Whites in Texas Cotton Culture In The White
Scourge, Neil Foley gives detailed facts about the construction and reconstruction of whiteness and
the connection of this whiteness to power, mainly on cotton culture in central Texas. Foley 's book
analyzes "whiteness" through detailed analysis of race, class, and gender. What was most intriguing
about this book is its comparison of whiteness on various racial groups and classes, for and how
each struggled in comparison to the other in order to thrive and exist with one another. In this book,
Foley shows a racial system that continues to produce both poverty material wise and poverty of
where you stand racially. It is also very interesting that the system exploits not only Mexicans and
Blacks, but also the poor whites who competed with them for work. In "The Old South in the
Southwest," a history of race and power in the beginnings of the Republic of Texas is provided to
the reader, for example, "Indians and free blacks were denied the constitutional protections accorded
to whites, while Mexicans occupied a nebulous, intermediate status between (nonwhite) Indian and
(marginally white) Spanish" (Foley 19), showing that the white American's were having trouble
categorizing Mexicans race–wise. This was an important issue to resolve because in America, being
able to have ownership of land meant power and thus meaning race determined who could and could
not own property and establish

Essay About Effect Of Geography On English Colonies In...

  • 1. Essay about Effect of Geography on English Colonies in... A.P US History The Effect Of Geography On English Colonies The New England, Middle and Southern colonies were all English ruled, but yet very different. Among their distinctions, was the geography which played an important role in shaping these colonies. New England attracted Puritan farmers who wanted to separate from the Catholic Church. But because of the bone dry soil in the North, these colonists found they couldn't continue with their traditional ways of farming. However, with the immense amounts of water that surrounded them, they found that they could fish and trade. The Middle colonies on the other, hand had a moderate amount of everything. The fertile soil and the major seaports such as Philadelphia and New York, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, because life expectancy was longer than that of the South enabling the growth of large families. Adults and children alike were expected to work, slave labor was not needed on the small farms in New England. Each family farmed enough to provide for their family. When indentured servants did come over to New England, they found that land was very dear. Those wanting to work in exchange for land found that they needed to go further south. Consequently, New England had the least ethnically mixed population of all the regions. The need for extensive travel was limited in the North. The reason for this was because the rivers were short and hard to negotiate. Therefore transportation by means of water was extremely difficult. The colonists found it proved to be more economical to settle close to one another. The northerners did make an effort to enrich their lifestyle by clearing forests for livestock .However this proved to be detrimental as the impact of cattle and other livestock over grazed the land which lead to extensive erosion and flooding. One positive aspect the resulted from the clearing of the land was the realization of the voluminous amounts of lumber that could be used for shipbuilding and exportation. The small towns in New England were tightly built settlements that centered around the churches and schools. Strong family units were the building block of each town. Towns that housed ... • 2. Comparing Central Minnesota 's City And Rural Life Just Over an Hour Away The city of Minneapolis, Minnesota is booming with life! With its convention center, night life noise, busy highways, advertised attractions, and sports related events, the city life expectations satisfy both visitors and residents. It is typical to assume that the high–end activities and busy nightlife attract political feuds and noise because they are located in the city. Nonetheless, this is not the case for some of Central Minnesota's rural life found in places such as Riverview, Sterns County, Baker Township, and parts of Saint Cloud. So, comparing Central Minnesota's city and rural life, where are peace and beauty located? There is a continuous political struggle between the acceptance of dairy farm growth and feedlot growth midst some of the family owned businesses in the rural areas. Insomuch, the largest milk producer wanted to invest about 55 million into a dairy feedlot last year, but regulators proposed environmental concerns such as nitrate pollution in the water, manure smell, and large–scale confinement of farm animals claiming it interferes with the beautiful side of country living. This family is known to have over 35,000 dairy cows currently working up to 22 hours a day giving them the competitive edge. Although this may appear somewhat monopolistic, it does provide employment opportunities for many as well as financial economic development for the entire State of Minnesota. Another spectacular main event in rural Minnesota is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Personal Narrative: My First Immigration To Canada It was the start of the 1900's, and Canada was looking for people to immigrate there. There were posters posted in Europe; everywhere you went there were advertisements endorsing immigration to Canada. My parents one day came home and looked over it. It promoted that anyone who was willing to settle in the Prairies would be given 169 acres of land. They wanted people to immigrate to the western part of Canada because by populating the land, it would slim the opportunity for America to invade the Prairies. This sounded like a tremendous idea. My dad used to work at a factory, but unfortunately he just lost his job to a machine. This placed my family in an awful position. At that time I was about four years old. They had to provide for my two older brothers and I. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Soon we were going to be evicted from our home because we could not pay the mortgage. I was really worried about my family and what we were going to do. I remember I can hear my parents discussing on how they should consider going. In the end, they decided that even though it was a risky move, we were going to take the chance and go. We travelled there by boat and it was a long journey. I found out that many people were going to immigrate there because many people lost their jobs and they wanted a better future. My family and I arrived and it was really hard to have a farm, but we worked hard and made it happen. Our farm was only some of the few farms that survived the year. With that my family expanded and I got twin brothers. The land was fertile and we were able to grow food for Canadians to consume and to be sold for profit. With the immigration to the Prairies the west became a market for eastern Canada's products and many of the railroad companies thrived with the increase of trade. An estimated two percent of the world population died during this war. The Civil War was single–handedly one of the deadliest war in history [Civil War Casualties].While there are many underlying reasons the war happened, slavery is the ultimate cause of the war. Everything ultimately roots back to slavery. The United States stands for unity, freedom, diversity, independence, and equality. When America claimed their independence from Great Britain in 1776 they viewed and regarded themselves as sovereign, or independent, states[Hooker]. • 5. The Color Red in Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye Essay As once said by Socrates, a famous Greek philosopher, "The unexamined life is not worth living." He believes people should read between the lines, and in the case of books, delve into what the author is trying to say by using symbols and imagery. To someone who does not examine the book, The Catcher in the Rye, it may seem to be about a "messed up" teenager who wanders around town and doesn't care about life. But when a range of ______ are explored, one will find that this book has common themes of innocence, changing, growing up and also death. It is discovered in various _____ the novel, such as in The Museum of Natural History, his red hunting hat, and the ducks in the Central Park Lagoon. The main character, Holden Caulfield, has ... The second time he seems to be making a transition from youth to adulthood. He shows two children around and enjoys the museum in a new way. This shows that he is maturing and accepting change. ______. His red hunting hat is symbolic of many things. He wears it during important times such as writing the composition about Allie's baseball glove, yet he seems to be embarrassed to wear it in public. "I took my old hunting hat out... and put it on. I knew I wouldn't meet anybody that knew me" (122). Even though he lacks confidence to wear it frequently, it becomes a part of how he sees himself. He acknowledges that it's "corny" but he personally likes how it looks; it is a symbol of his uniqueness and desire to be different. The red color of the hat is also noteworthy, the same as Allie and Phoebe's hair. He may associate 'red' with purity and innocence those characters represent and wears it as a connection to them. Holden is very inquisitive about where the ducks in Central Park go in the winter. His questioning the cab drivers of this shows a youthful willingness in him to discover what he is curious about. "You know those ducks in that lagoon right near Central Park South? That little lake? By any chance, do you happen to know where they go, the ducks, when it gets all frozen over? Do you happen to know, by any chance?" (60) The cab drivers give mostly thoughtless ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Cultural Uniqueness Within the Agricultural Community Running Head: CULTURAL UNIQUENESS OF THE AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY. Identifying and exploring cultural uniqueness within the agricultural community of the Central Valley, California. Jennifer D. Andrew Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary Abstract The central valley of California stretches as far north as Sacramento and south all the way to Bakersfield– from Shasta County to Kern County. It is some 450 miles long and typically 40 to 60 miles wide. It encompasses 18 counties with a total of over five million people and over 42,000 square miles––one–sixth of the population and more than two–fifths of the land area of the state. The farmers come from many different ethnic groups, and can be found all over the world. In the period between 166 and 1920, between the Civil War and World War I, California became and integrated part of the expanding United States and the construction and completion of the transcontinental railroad. This analysis will look at some of the unique cultural features that are part of this area. It was found that many of the rural small–scale farms are coming under increased social and economic pressures that can disrupt family life in many instances. There are forms of various Christian counseling that can help these families cope with some of the pressures they are facing. Contents Abstract 2 1. Introduction 5 1.1 Demographics 7 2. Pesticides In America Essay Humans have a tendency to afflict conflict and havok away from their own living quarters in order to reduce casualties in whatever the conflict may be so that their homeland remains pure and untouched. Given that America has one of strictest health and clean up regulations in the world they tend to follow the Chinese proverb: "the frog does not drink from the pond in which it lives." The pond that is being talked about here is a nation's natural resources that are necessary for survival. Instead of ravaging their own land and extract it, America tends to seek out other countries that are able to perform methods of growing crops that would otherwise be illegal in America. In these countries such as Costa Rica and Honduras many of the pesticides that are illegal in the United States are used heavily there. Chlorpyrifos is a pesticide used for bananas that are shipped to the United States by the trillions. It has been known to "harm workers, communities and the environment (Environmental Working Group's)." Many children were subject to mental retardation and decreased brain function because of the banana farms. This is one example of a pesticide that the United States is indirectly using through Costa Rica in order to avoid the environmental costs of chlorpyrifos on the people and the land. But the problem is not with Costa Rica or the other Central American countries, it's that we are perfectly capable of growing own own food and are running out of "other ponds" to take advantage ... I think because a lot of people didn't want to go to war or enter the military service because of many different reasons and beliefs they had also some democrats that wanted peace and to reunite the states through negotiation rather than force. 2. Attrition, the wearing down of one side by the other through exhaustion of soldiers and resources, played a critical role as the war dragged on. The north, with its large population, could replace its troops much more easily than the south. 3. The confederate constitution emphasized states' rights and limited the central government's power. This commitment to states' rights often interfered with Davis's ability to conduct the war. Although many southern leaders supported the war, some opposed Jefferson Davis when he supported conscription and established martials law early in 1862. 4.The north had a strong naval tradition. More than three–fourths of the united states navy's officers came from the north. Also most of the navy's warships and all but two of the nation's shipyards remained under union control. The north also had several economic advantages. The north had a larger population, giving it an advantage in raising an army and in supporting the war effort. In addition, in 1860 the north produced almost 90 percent of total manufacturing weapons and equipment. The north also had more railroad lines to enable the movement of armies and supplies. Narrowing it down to focus on a specific area, which is the cotton culture in central Texas, Foley breaks down whiteness through a through analysis of race, class, gender. A fascinating aspect of this book is the differences mentioned towards whiteness and the various ethno–racial classes and their tense relations to develop a meaningful existence amongst one another. At the same time, the hotter southern states continued to rely on slaves for its agricultural economy and cotton production. Southerners made big profits from cotton and slaves and fought a war to keep them. Northerners do not need slaves for their economy and have waged war to free them everything was tied to the economic difference and wetted by cotton. Agricultural economics is certainly one of the causes of the civil war, but not the only one. So what began the civil war a war that divided the nation, destroyed cultures, cities and railway lines, and claimed 630,000 lives? Numerous factors pushed the nation into chaos in 1861. The main political causes include the slow collapse of the Whig party, the founding of the Republican Party and, above all, the election of Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860. Religious opposition to slavery has increased, supported by ministers and abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison. The geographical conflict over the extension of slavery in the western territories and the States–zones without an industrial economy and a farm economy grew. And political agreements ... • 17. What Led To The Civil War Essay The Confederate States of America consisted of eleven Southern states that seceded from the Union in 1860 and 1861 to establish a new nation. In 1860, seven states of the Deep South–Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi South Carolina and Texas seceded because they thought the election of Abraham Lincoln would threaten their livelihood by abolishing slavery. Later, four states of the Upper South–Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia joined them. The CSA, led by Jefferson Davis, quite simply wanted to keep the Deep South and the Upper South enslaved. The unspoken goal of secession was to ensure that 'all men were not created equal'. Holding degrees in American Culture, English and American Literature, and English, Dr. Neil Foley specializes in the evolving components of race and social identity in what he calls the Borderlands: Mexico and the American West. The White Scourge: Mexicans, Blacks, and Poor Whites in Texas Cotton Culture bridges the gap between the narratives of two Borderlands histories, that of African– Americans and southern history, and that of Mexican–Americans and southwestern history. Looking at Texas, and specifically the area from Dallas in the north, Corpus Christi in the south, San Antonio in the west, and Houston in the east, Foley analyzes how Mexicans, blacks, and poor whites maneuvered and dealt with the racial space in this Borderlands province of cotton culture during the first half of the twentieth century. To Foley, this area of central Texas provides an exceptional example of Borderlands interactions because of the nature of cotton culture as compared to plantation farming in other parts of the South. Cotton farming in central Texas relied on mostly white share tenants, and mostly black or Mexican sharecroppers. Migrant Mexican labor was also used to harvest crops. These three standards produced complex configurations as Mexicans began competing with blacks for more work and both competed with whites for tenancy. Taking a Look at Environmental Racism Did you know that 35 out of 57 waste sites in the eastern part of Los Angeles were located in zip codes with at least half the population consisting of Latinos? (Pulido 21) This is a direct and apparent representation of environmental racism in our country. In particular, its existence could be closely observed in the recent dispute of an urban farmland in South Central Los Angeles. Frankly, environmental racism had little effect on the actual dissolution of the South Central farm, as it was an issue of property rights. Instead, environmental racism played a significant role in the confrontation process that led to the closure by excluding minority groups, especially Latinos, from decision processes and obstructing their effort to conserve the farmland. Twenty–five years ago, the city of Los Angeles obtained the South Central farmland under eminent domain with the intention of building a waste incinerator. While this project failed to proceed, 400 community members were given the permission to farm the land. It provided a lot of support to the community, which is inhabited mostly by low–income minorities. While aiding the farmers themselves, it also brought monetary and psychological benefits to the neighborhood. The Confederates had legitimate opportunity to win independence, but they failed to capitalize on it. The South's chances at victory were not remote; rather they could expect to win. The ultimate cause of the South's failure was a lack of aggression in all aspects. The two times the Confederates attacked the North at Antietam and Gettysburg, the results were catastrophic because of a lack of strategy. Therefore, the Border States felt they would be safe staying in the Union while the confederates fought a destructive war. The confederacy had the ability to persuade these states to secede in 1861 when President Lincoln ordered supplies to be brought to Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The north claimed they just wanted to keep the men in the fort alive, but there actions were provocative. Foolishly, the confederates fell for their plan and fired upon the fort. This made the South look like the aggressors in the war rather than the north, and persuaded the Border States not to secede as they felt their lifestyle was not going to be ruined by the north. If the South avoided this unnecessary conflict and instead waited for the north to attack first, it would confirm that the North wanted the confederates to succumb to their ideals and change their society to conform to their standards. The South almost certainly won if they had the Border States on their side. If acquired, they would double the confederates' manufacturing and increase the white population by forty–five percent. • 33. Social Differences Between North And South States One nation. Two distinct regions. The United States in the early 1800's distinguished the North and the South. These two parts of the country had differences from social and political structures, to political views, geography and daily attitudes which eventually led to vastly differently lifestyles. Certain components strengthened relations and others crumbled them. A major difference between the North and the South was slavery. A turning point in history, slavery was essential in the growth and progression of America. While the North had nearly abolished it, only 9% of the South's African American population was free. The industrialization in the North attracted immigrants which caused a sharp population increase. The plantations in the South appealed those wanting to be wealthy at the expense of slaves. At the bottom of the social ladder, free blacks and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the North encouraged industrialization, the South thrived from agriculture. At its base, both regions used farming and trade. However, the North, engaged in international trade and small family farms, did not rely on farming as a source of significant income. The South, on the other hand, used trade with England as a way to make money. With extensive farming and enough slaves to keep the textile market flourishing, the southern economy was contingent upon agriculture. This further widened the separation between the North and the South. Political identities were where the North and South truly showed a clear division. In the early 1800's, most citizens of the North agreed with the Republican party while the Southerners leaned more heavily towards the Democrats. These parties sectionalized the way of living between the two regions and influenced political decisions made by both sides. The North wanted a stronger central government as opposed to the South who wanted more powerful individual state ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Puppy Farming In Australia Across Australia, many dogs are victims to cruel treatment and conditions from dog breeders in facilities known as puppy farms. Puppy farms, also called puppy mills and puppy factories, are intensive breeding businesses whose facilities fail to meet the behavioural, social and/or psychological needs of the dogs which occupy the puppy farm. Extreme confinement, inadequate veterinary care, unhygienic living conditions, small cages and overcrowded housing are some of the many flaws puppy farms may contain. Many dogs develop health issues with some suffering with diseases and acute and chronic conditions and bitches are often treated as 'breeding machines,' constantly producing litters of puppies for profit. According to the Queensland government, factors contributing to the standard of an animal's welfare the number of bitches owned, selection against certain traits and non desirable conditions, the treatment of diseases and injuries, hygiene, size of enclosure, density of dogs socialisation, exercise and quality and quantity of the presented diets. • 36. The Story Behind The War The Story Behind the War By Tiana Thibeault Traditionally, students have been taught that differences between northern and southern economies caused the Civil War. The industrial revolution in the North, during the first few decades of the 19th century, brought about an economy that revolved around a machine age which relied on wage laborers, not slaves. At the same time, the warmer Southern states continued to rely on slaves for their farming economy and cotton production. Southerners made huge profits from cotton and slaves and fought a war to maintain them. Northerners did not need slaves to establish or maintain their economy and fought a war to free them. Everything else, we are led to believe, was tied to that economic difference that was focused on cotton. The economy which was tied to agriculture was certainly one cause of the Civil War, but not the only one. Wars are never simple and neither are their causes. Research shows there are other factors that helped bring about the war which are central to a deeper understanding of America 's past. So what did start the Civil War–a war that divided the nation, destroyed crops, cities, and railroad lines, and claimed 630,000 lives? Many factors threw the nation into chaos in 1861. Key political issues at the time include the slow destruction of the Whig Party, the founding of the Republican Party, and, most important, the election of Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860. Religious opponents to slavery increased in number ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Shift In America There are many reasons that cause this big shift in the United State economy. One reason was the improvement in transportation. Since the country ran under one central government, they help create better roads and canals which help in the transportation. Another reason that enable this change was innovation or new technology. For example, the invention of railroad and creation of steam machines increase the effectiveness of transportation and decrease the time it takes to deliver goods (lecture). Another important invention at this time were the cotton engine. This engine increased the production of cotton of America significantly (Slavery, The Making of America). This started from organizing the workers and therefore caused the creation of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Political, Political And Military Advantages Of The Civil War Tayler Burrell History 12 December 2017 Civil War: Union Military Advantages The civil war, fought from 1861–1865, was started after seven southern slave states declared their secession and formed the Confederate states. The Union had many advantages that, ultimately, led them to victory. The had many political, economic, and military benefits that aided them in their victory. The Union was held by a strong central government. A strong central government is defined as a government that's able to force the states and municipalities to follow the central government's laws. Abe Lincoln did this by not letting the surrounding southern states to secede and simply ignored that they had "succeeded". When South Carolina "seceded" from ... This illegally increased the size of the army, which was also a power only reserved for the Congress, and authorized illegal voting methods for the Union border states. Congress had generally supported all of these decisions, but Lincoln further justified them by claiming that desperate times called for the measures he took.He also later promised to obey the Constitution once the war was over. Economically the Union was very strong and greatly outweighed the South. President Lincoln, as the war had begun, quickly declared a blockade, as described earlier, against the main Confederate ports. This was supposed to be under an international treaty, that hadn't been signed yet, which had created the controversial political issues for Lincoln. Fortunate enough for the Union, when war broke out the United States Navy was small like it's army, and its ships were scattered around the oceans. Of the American ships that were in surrounding waters, ten were partially destroyed or destroyed to prevent them from going to the Confederates when Virginia seceded. If they did this would have taken the Norfolk naval base with it. Another Economical advantage the Union had was that Northern Republicans could pass higher tariffs, write a wide variety of needed reform bills, build the national economy, and strengthen the federal government because there were no conservative Southerners. • 39. The White Scourge, By Neil Foley The White Scourge: Mexicans, Blacks, and Poor Whites in Texas Cotton Culture In The White Scourge, Neil Foley gives detailed facts about the construction and reconstruction of whiteness and the connection of this whiteness to power, mainly on cotton culture in central Texas. Foley 's book analyzes "whiteness" through detailed analysis of race, class, and gender. What was most intriguing about this book is its comparison of whiteness on various racial groups and classes, for and how each struggled in comparison to the other in order to thrive and exist with one another. In this book, Foley shows a racial system that continues to produce both poverty material wise and poverty of where you stand racially. It is also very interesting that the system exploits not only Mexicans and Blacks, but also the poor whites who competed with them for work. In "The Old South in the Southwest," a history of race and power in the beginnings of the Republic of Texas is provided to the reader, for example, "Indians and free blacks were denied the constitutional protections accorded to whites, while Mexicans occupied a nebulous, intermediate status between (nonwhite) Indian and (marginally white) Spanish" (Foley 19), showing that the white American's were having trouble categorizing Mexicans race–wise. This was an important issue to resolve because in America, being able to have ownership of land meant power and thus meaning race determined who could and could not own property and establish ...
