Definition and Description of Distance Education
Distance education is any academic learning method that lets the teacher and the student participate
and communicate in a convenient manner, while sometimes in different places and sometimes at
different times. The distance education concept has allowed a diverse set of individuals to continue
their education, whether it is for personal or professional satisfaction. The teacher is still able to
create, design, and plan with goals and objectives, and the student is able to learn and experience
through the distance (Davey, 1999). Another word that is associated with distance learning is
multimedia. With the use of multimedia, the learning is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The distance learning involves computer based instruction. This kind of training takes about fifty
percent less time then a face–to–face seminar. The text and the graphics, and the time are the
incentives for the distance learning. The type of training areas that the businesses specialize in, when
using distance education, are information technology, sales, and management training (Corporate
distance learning, 1999).
Videoconferencing in businesses is also a way that they use distance learning. It was found that with
videoconferencing about thirty percent of the time is learner interaction, where the student is asking
questions to the experts, working with others, and typing on the keyboard (Hancock, 1999).
Hancock also mentions how the American Red Cross uses distance learning to encourage
interactivity and "self–directed learning" to create skills such as, leadership and business
proficiency. In fact, the American Red Cross has over a sixty percent distance learning involvement,
and people were very eager to learn, using this system. Also, companies like Ford and Lucent are
successful companies that use distance learning with their training and development departments.
Lucent uses the "business television", which is a network used with the human resources department
to promote business (1999).

Online Distance Learning Essay
Online Distance Learning
Throughout the past few decades, online distance learning has become a prevalent method of
teaching. Through the use of technology, the field of education has been slightly altered to fit the
needs of both the educators and their pupils, by developing a communication system. For example,
creating email addresses and generating websites, where the teacher and student can interact. The
development of online distance learning is beneficial to the future of education because it provides
more opportunity for students.
What exactly does "online distance learning" mean? "A type of education where students work
independently and communicate with faculty and other students via computer based
communication" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Along with distance learning comes flexibility, convenience, and reliability. For example, there are
never interruptions because the class is web based and students can complete assignments based on
their individual schedules. "Online education is possibly the biggest event in American intellectual
life in the past forty years," stated Gerald A. Heeger. This statement expresses how significant
distance learning has become in society.
Contrary to the advantages of distance learning there are a few, minor drawbacks to this style of
learning. Unfortunately, virtual campuses are based on economic profit rather than educational
purposes. "Online Professors can't witness student's body language. If I can't see the faces, I can't
know anything about them" (Vicchio, Stephen). Since there is no face–to–face communication,
instructors cannot see the student's reactions, which can result in confusion among the subject being
discussed. In contrast to the traditional classroom setting, which teaches students to interact with one
another, distance learning unfortunately takes away this value. Sitting in front of a computer, usually
surrounded by family, does not allow the student to practice social learning. "As children grow up in

Distance education has changed and grown a lot from external studies and correspondence
education during the last century. Distance education has become a recognized phenomenon today,
thanks to technology which has shortened the physical distances.
DEVELOPMENT OF DISTANCE EDUCATION The evolution of Distance education could be
divided in four periods. The first period was from 1850 to 1960, this generation used
correspondence classes which used radio and instructional television. The second period was from
1960 to 1985. This generation highlights because of the use of multiple technologies for example;
fax, print cassettes, radio and videos. The third period was from 1985 to 1995. This period is

Sometimes those were delayed for weeks. "Professor plus" was another way of DE in these time.
The professor was a television instructor in an on–campus class and the plus was an assistant who
was in the classroom and provided assistance to the students. Then class cessions began to be
prerecorded for those who for some reason had miss class. This videos were mailed also to the
students who lived in remote zones. As Distance Education continued progressing, teachers at the
same time had to improve their televised teaching; for example, during the broadcast teaching the
instructors had to repeat the questions and the corresponding answer. The instructors also learned
how to help the distance students to feel like they were part of the class by looking directly to the
cameras. Teachers learned how to do not talk too fast and not too slowly; they also learned to short
the content presentations by editing down the videotaped classes. But, the most effective strategy
that they used to do a good job was the constant evaluation to the program as evolved, to make it
better. The look of DE changed with the coming–in of the internet and the affordable access to the
personal computers. since that time this program has been developed over. ED will continue to
evolve in parallel with the continued development and growth of telecommunications.

The Impact Of Distance Education On Education
Advances in technology helped form a new type of education. This type of education is an
alternative to the more traditional approach to education. Some individuals oppose the new form of
learning stating that it is ineffective. While those who favor it assert that it's a type of learning that is
beneficial to students. This new form of learning commonly occurs exclusively through cyberspace
and is referred to as distance education. Distance education is a type of education that combines
typical teaching methods with technology to instruct students who aren't physically present like in a
more traditional classroom setting. "Online degrees and online colleges are becoming more
prevalent and popular with students' increased access to the Internet. A growing number of students
enroll in at least some online courses while studying for their degree." (Explorer 233). Some
individuals believe that distance education isn't as successful or beneficial as traditional education
because students don't receive the same face to face interaction like they do in a classroom. People
presume that distance education isn't successful because "college students in online courses fail and
drop out more often than students in classroom–based courses." (Maxwell 214). What they don't
take into consideration is why an online college course may have a higher fail rate. For instance,
students typically fail a class because the class might be overly difficult for the student to
comprehend. Other times

Distance Learning
Distance learning (education) has become an integral part of the education process over the past few
decades and is growing in popularity as technology advances.(Willis 1992) describes distance
education (as) "the organizational framework andprocess of providing instruction at a distance.
Distance education takes place when ateacher and student(s) are physically separated, and
technology...(is) used to bridge theinstruction gap." (Coutts 1996). Furthermore, "distance learning
activities are designedto fit the specific context for learning, the nature of the subject matter;

Also technological decisions should be based on instructional content, the need for involvement, and
the particular learning outcomes desired. (Counts 1996)
"There is some evidence that the success of distance education in schools depends largely on the
effectiveness of the teacher, and that this is in turn depends on the teacher's knowledge, skills,
enthusiasm, and commitment to innovation." (Moore & Thompson 1990).
When planning distance education, Willis (1998) lists a few factors to consider:
Distance education is about increasing access, not saving money. The technical, logistical and
support costs can be very high. Therefore, the financial aspects must be considered.
Nothing should be assumed. Decisions should be based on definable problems and tangible
customer needs. A needs assessment, though time consuming, may be worth the time to complete.
Realize that good plans are never finished. Rather than wait until all issues are resolved and a long–
term plan in place, resolve the immediate issues, get started, and follow an approach that enables
you to do short– and intermediate–term planning while completing the tasks at hand.
Share assumptions with stakeholders. Too often administrators and technologists make distance
delivery decisions without the informed participation

In Sahin's research (2008), he was trying to find if the selection of technologies chosen for online
learning could be used to reflect learners' preferences and related characteristics. According to the
research among 279 students in five online undergraduate courses, the Moore's Transactional
Distance Theory may connect with Kolb's theory, which means three dimensions learning may link
with two–dimensional views of individual learning styles. At last, the author recommends
combining the all dimensions learning technologies to meet learning requirements. As more
researchers and instructors realized that characteristics might affect people's learning efficiency, they
paid more attention to "student–centered" learning/instruction style. There are several characteristics
that may have influence on choosing appropriate instruction content and course structure, such as
gender, age and cognitive styles. One of the most important characteristics is the learning method a
learner prefers. Learning Style Inventory (LSI) is an instrument to identify different learning
experiences. This instrument was developed based on Experiential Learning Theory (ELT).
Evaluation is an important part in distance education to evaluate the effectiveness of learning
activities. Moore's Transactional Distance Theory is the theoretical base of Sahin's research. The

The Advantages And Benefits Of Open And Distance Learning
Open and Distance Learning (ODL) refers to the supplying of flexible educational opportunities in
terms of access and multiple modes of knowledge collection (Malaysian Qualifying Agency 2008).
Flexible means the availability of choices for education anywhere, anytime and anyhow.
Access means opportunity made available to all, freeing them from constraints of time and place.
Multiple modes mean the use of various delivery systems and learning resources.
According to the Commonwealth of Learning (2000), some of the more commonly used terms
related to ODL are the following: correspondence education, home study, independent study,
external studies, continuing education, distance teaching, adult education and technology–based
education.
ODL is becoming an accepted and necessary part of mainstream education due to the need to make

The increasing number of open universities being established across the world clearly shows this
trend. To add to that, more and more traditional universities are transforming from single mode to
dual mode universities, recognising the importance of distance education in providing greater
accessibility and up–to–date educational resources (Malaysian Qualifying Agency 2008).
According to researcher Bayoli (2013) in today's learning society; student support in institutions of
higher learning is an important issue. The recent global growth and popularity of open and distance
learning has been thanks to the unique advantages of this form of learning such as flexibility for
those students who wish to have a working life while furthering their education
Student support is crucial to students who are undertaking ODL. Student support as reported in
many sources breaks down into two components. The first being academic support. The second
being non–academic support with an objective to help learners learn successfully (Tait

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Distance Education
Statement of the Problem
Distance education has the ability can be a great, as well as, a bad tool to use in the educational
system. There are many pros and cons to both sides of the spectrum. In today's world this is the
constant struggle school, education faculties, along with any type of faculties that uses technology.
Identification of the Issue people don't know wither or not to make the transition into technology or
to stay with the old ways. One can't blame them either, there are many things that can contribute to a
person wanting to reform transition to newer technology. These disadvantages consist of lack funds,
lack of focus, social problems, accessibility, and several other problems. In contrast, what it has in
disadvantages it makes up for in advantages. Distance learning can provide individuals along with a
massive corporation with great advantages. The advantages consist of factors such as flexibility,
advancing technology skills, accessibility to thoughts who may have a tough time making it to class,
eliminates some anxiety, better time efficiency, and allows one to learn at their own pace. To assess
wither, or not distance learning is positive or negative one need to have an understanding what
exactly distance is.
Overview/Definition
According to collegescholarships.org learning is only considered distance education when the
teacher and student are not present in the traditional classroom setting. In other words, if a student
and professor are not in a face to face situation, in the flesh then it is considered distance education.
Most of the time distance education takes place on a personal computer on the internet or some type
of program that allows the student to link via electronically to their professor along with their other
classmates. The interesting thing about distance education is that it's been around for a while, it's not
a new concept, and it's quite old only actually. According to ollegescholarships.org they say the
concept originally began back in the 18th century where it uses the mail service as its hub of
communication, and learning. They would exchange learning material via mail between teacher and
student, this was called a correspondence course and were popular for some

Disadvantages Of Delivering Distance Learning On The...
Education is also been effected by this global network. There are many online organizations that
provide an online access to educational materials. For example Khan Academy which is a non–
profit organization created in 2006, with a goal of providing a collection of online tools to improve
students that seek for these materials. It features over 2,100 educational videos for basic math
problems like 1+1=2 to a college level calculus and physics (the next web). These online
educational tools are not just nation wise but also on a global level. For example a student can
register for a summer online class at HCC and spend his whole summer overseas, the internet enable
him to have fun with his vacation with making sure he will be able to do all the assigned
assignments for his class. Distance learning (DL) depends totally on the Internet and the World Wide
Web. And could not be operated without it. Advantages of delivering distance learning on the
Internet include the following: place and time flexibility; potential to extend and reach a global
audience; used with mostly any electronic; quick and easy updating of content; and usually lower
cost for operating. (Kerka, Sandra, ERIC.edu). Before the internet era, books were the only source
of information, so if a student wanted to write a paper for his class, he had to look in different
libraries for books that contains concepts related to his argument. This will take time and effort. The
internet came with a new sets of actual books and articles, but in the form of an online documents.
These online books are trustful and garneted for the most part. Results from a survey of 236 students
over 2 years showed that the Internet can facilitate a good educational practices. Students believe
that the use of email to contact encouraged an active learning environment. They also believe that
the Internet materials allow more efficient use of time in and out of the classroom, and improve their
learning. (Michael E. Ritter, Taylor & Francis online). English is the most popular language, and
many people from all around the world use the internet for online classes to learn this language. The

"Distance education is a process that creates and provides access to learning when time and distance

1998, p.1). The "need to take the distance out of education has not been driven largely by sheer need
to bridge physical separations. It has been based mainly on providing access as open as possible to

New Orbit Communications, "we have the third wave [of distance learning], where distance learning

Online Education Is A Type Of Distance Learning
Online education is a type of distance learning that involves taking courses without attending an on–
campus college. Instead students and professors interact over the internet. It utilizes the Internet or
videoconferencing to create learning communities. Course materials are provided on a Web site and
are occasionally found on CD–ROM; email, bulletin boards, forums, and chat rooms are used to
interact with other students and teachers. ("Online Learning?" 2015) In 1873 the first official online

Introduction
Distance learning is a study technique introduced in the late 19th century to help aid those that were
unable to reach formal forms of education systems.it is also referred to as e–learning derived from
the use of the internet to convey the syllabus and distance education. It is characterized by the
physical state of teacher–student relationship that is affected by the geographical separation and in
some situations also time separation. Ideally distance learning is normal learning only in a non–
conventional manner. It is mostly offered by established institution thus the materials used for the
traditional method of learning are similar to those used in the program only that it may be
customized to fit the virtual learning. It is highly appreciated by full time workers seeking to be

through the accessibility of digital reading resources ,podcasting, email linked group discussions,

the tutor is part of the institution and is also certified by the institution before a referral is made and
the student takes up the curriculum of the institution despite their geographical location. This
program merges perfectly with the conventional modes of learning as it is subjected to scrutiny by
the same agencies that verify the traditional learning modes. It uses the same standards as the
traditional modes to implement its studies as well as equip its trainees with the same knowledge.

36). Teaster and Blieszner (1999) say "the term distance learning has been applied to many
instructional methods: however, its primary distinction is that the teacher and the learner are
separate in space and possibly time" (p. 741). However, distance learning is not a new phenomenon.
The history of distance education could be traced back to the early 1700s in the form of
correspondence education, but technology–based distance education might be best linked to the
introduction of audiovisual devices into the schools in the early 1900s. With the development of the
postal service in the 19th century, commercial correspondence colleges provided distance education
to students across the country. This trend continued well into the 20th century with the advent of
radio, television, and other media that allowed learning from distance. In the last decade, distance
education has changed significantly with the use of computer–mediated learning, two–way
interactive video, and a variety of other technologies. Colleges and universities are forging ahead to
provide learning at a distance, and many institutions are making substantial investments in new
technologies for teaching.

An objective look into distance learning
"Can You Be Educated from a Distance," an insightful essay by James Barszcz, brings to focus
some of the benefits and disadvantages of Distance Learning education (DL). In it, Barszcz
discusses the mechanics of DL courses available to students, the quality of education DL can offer,
and some reasoning behind its rapidly growing popularity. "Can You Be Educated from a Distance"
is an engaging article that students of all ages can benefit from. Barszcz cleverly introduces a
seemingly positive example why DL is an effective form of education, and then gives a more logical
reason why it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Barszcz points out that freshman enrolled in only DL courses are 15 percent more likely
to drop out, and that the "Students themselves seem to understand the weaknesses inherent in the
setup."(7) Another example of this is where the author speaks of a survey conducted for eCornell.
The survey showed that "Less than a third of the respondents expected the quality of the on–line
courses to be as good as the classroom course."(7) Barszcz strongly produces yet another
illustration: "Regardless of their expectations or desires," (7) Fairleigh Dickinson University
students, "are now required to take one DL course per year."(7) This is supposed to give students the
skills necessary to function properly in today's technological age. Conversely, he explains that these
universities are more interested in making money that preparing their students for the future.
In Barszczs' essay conclusion, he gives poetically clear examples why students will benefit from
taking campus–based courses. He stresses the value of face to face interaction between the students
and the faculty. Being late to a class, or missing an assignment has a stronger effect if the student
has to personally interact with the instructor. Barszcz defines the word education as a process of
"drawing out", stating that campus life can "draw out, from within a person, qualities of intellect and
character that would have otherwise remained hidden or dormant." (8).

Leadership : The Field Of Distance Education
Leadership in Distance Education To most people, leadership and management are used
interchangeably. The roles and skills of leadership and management, however, are distinctively
different. Kotter (2012) states that unlike management that is responsible for carrying out changes
within systems, leadership on the other hand, "builds systems or transforms old ones...takes you into
territory that is new and less well known, or completely unknown to you" (Location 36. para 1).
This is notable with leadership in the field of distance education.
Over the past two decades, leadership within the field of distance education has transformed
distance education from being the "stepchild" of higher education to the forefront, particularly
online learning, making it one of the most coveted mode of teaching and learning in the field of
higher education today. Kotter (2012) pointed out that leadership is the ability to create or make
suitable changes when necessary and sets the stage for the future. This is the kind of leadership that
is needed for distance education to take the lead in education and stay abreast with the ever–
changing new and innovative technology; the vehicle that has made e–learning so popular and
competitive today. This two–part paper focuses on five attributes or approaches that best embody
effective leadership in the field of distance education as well as three challenges distance education
leaders face today.

The Benefits Of Long Distance Relationships
Long distance relationships are common in our present day culture because of personal choices. We
are connected on a global scale and these connections are not only economical, they are also
romantic. Personally, this facet of living in 2017 has affected the relationship with my boyfriend and
many problems occur when living far away from the person I love. Commonly, the problems caused
by distances in communication create turmoil that transition into our romantic lives. The solution for
this concern is based on a technology product that provides individuals a wider range of options.
Macmillan Dictionary defines long–distance relationship as "a romantic relationship between two
people who live far apart and so cannot see each other very often." By saying long–distance
relationship, it is not only an obstacle for lovers. Married couples, friends, and parents with their
children might also experience the same situation. Geographically separation can come from a
variety of reasons, including college students going to different school, individuals pursue different
career goals, and for immigration purpose. Married couples can be separated due to military service
or deployment. Not many people believe in the durability of a long–distance relationship. In my
case, I choose to study abroad for my major while my boyfriend is currently living in Vietnam. I
have to admit that it is not easy to keep a relationship going strong. If it is tough to maintain a

Original Title Many variables are involved when it comes to learning. Some people learn better from
seeing things, others through hearing them. Others learn things better by doing them, or through
other medium such as music. How you learn can determine what style of school you should attend.
The Ohio State University would be a traditional classroom setting, whereas the University of
Phoenix would be considered an online school (University of Phoenix ). There are many benefits for
each of these styles of learning. The Ohio State University should become a blended school in order
to capitalize on the strengths of both forms of schooling, and recently they have taken steps in this
direction.

In a traditional classroom setting you have set hours in which you can attend, hindering some people
from having the opportunity to go to a traditional campus. When it comes to online schooling you
have complete flexibility. Of course with this flexibility and freedom comes a price. Online students
must be driven enough to complete their assignments alone (Illinois Online Network). Online
students don't have professors or other students reminding them in offhand ways of assignments
they have to complete or tests to study for. A good online course should be "a convenient way to
receive their education – not an easier way" (Illinois Online Network). This is to say that online
courses should be just as engaging and challenging as a traditional classroom setting. They should
not be cheat ways for students to float into having degrees. This is a main reason that not all types of
classes should be available online.
Not all things can be effectively learned through an online class. Arts related classes are one
example. Art classes explore different mediums which can be incredibly difficult to do through an
online setting. Hands on experience are one of the main staples of many aspects of art. Graphic
design can be done through a computer program, but that is only one side of art. It would be very

Distance learning is when students take courses by using some form of communication other than
face to face communication with an instructor. This type of learning has been used since as far back
as the 1800's when adults would learn handwriting by ordering lessons through the mail (Cosgrove
2002). The technology for distance learning has been progressing for some time now. Iowa State
University started to offer courses through television in 1934 (Cosgrove 2002). These days we use

the discussion board, post online quizzes, make the syllabus available online and much more. When
a professor puts all these things on the Blackboard site it becomes available for the whole class to

Can Long Distance Relationship Work?
A long distance relationship can have many meanings and experiences may be very different from
one person to another. For some people, living a long distance from a loved one may be a normal
routine in life, while for some people the occasional distance can be difficult and challenging. A
long distance relationship can be for a few days, years, or months can occur over a few days,
months. For other people, long distance relationship is just like something normal in their family
structure, and other people it is like a new experience.

Communication Technologies; College students use various communication technologies on a daily
basis to contact family and friends, however, few studies have specifically examined the user's
satisfaction with these tools. Yates (2008) found that many students reportedly spend an average of
30 minutes to several hours on Facebook daily, though this system proved unfulfilling for those who
became emotionally attached and preoccupied with their connections with "friends". Knoxville
(2011) found that while students integrated technology into their social lives, face–to–face
communication remained the preferred mode of interaction. Long distance relationship and close

Education and Distance Education in Apartheid South Africa
This is an examination of the practice of distance education in Apartheid South Africa and its many
achievements to human growth and development. It addresses the significance of education to the
indigenous population in South Africa and the major contributors of distance education to improve
the cultural and ethnic conditions in society, and its growth through the different phases of learning.
The methods used included a thorough review of the literature that analyzed the practices and
history of Apartheid, its challenges and impact on society sanctioned by laws that legalized a form
of discrimination that denied non–whites access to education and equal standings as citizens. This
paper is presented in four sections, an introduction, followed by a historical account to apartheid that
covers the educational practices with an introduction to distance education–the many challenges and
achievements in South Africa. It also provides a brief history of the distance learning institutions,
and a conclusion summarizing the findings and achievements today.
Background
History of Apartheid and the implications to education
Apartheid evolved under the British government under the notion that ethnic groups, especially
non–whites were to exist by categorization and segregation (World Book Online, 2012). This belief
resulted in the passing of several "petty laws" that condoned the practice of equity and equality
(Wikipedia, 2011) and lasted from 1948 until 1991, continuing

Hannay and Newvine note "that while the concept of distance learning, or rather on–line learning
has popularized in the present days, the concept is not alien to the education community, as is
evident from the vast history of correspondence education" (Hannay and Newvine, 2006, p. 7).
However, times have changed; regardless if the education community is onboard today's learner
demands an education that offers convenience, flexibility, and courses available for career
advancements.
Distance education offers more convenience for the adult learner than traditional schools. As more
job advancement opportunities require a certification, a wider age demographics enter the classroom
and need to address their individual concerns and expectations. A distance–learning course, as
opposed to a traditional learning course provides flexibility, ease of learning while working, and
reduced cost advantage to the learners (Hassenburg, 2009). Furthermore a distance–learning course
provides a learner, an option to alter their skill set and learning lesson as per their personalized
needs, and provide a sense of autonomy to the student. Many adult learners have children and work

Distance Learning
Currently, computers already play a prominent role in many aspects of our lives from personal
works to education fields. The Internet can also be invaluable in linking people culturally and
socially (Hacker & Capehart, 1999). Geographically and historically, most universities in the world
offer distance learning to students through the Internet, and the distance learning is becoming a new
trend of the 21st academy. In particular, computers will permit a degree of individualization–
personalized coaching or tutoring (Gardner, 2000: 31). Through easily accessible teaching
communication online, distance learning comes to replace our support problems in traditional
campus learning. The distance learning is an educational ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Those who don't want to waste hours hanging around on campus can use flexible schooling on the
Internet. For instance, according to Lehrer's study (1998), one of ITT's students can take care of her
family and do her studying before her child wakes up. In addition, currently many campuses have
developed online education course work. Some of them offer distance education for their students
during summer or vacation, not in regular semester. The Standford University offers 30 courses
designed for a master degree in teaching English and is geared toward employed professionals.
Thus, the slogan of distance learning "learning anytime, anywhere, at any rate (Uhlig, 2002:672)" is
a main advantage in online education. With the help of advanced technology, students not only get
lectures from a computer monitor in real time but also choose the time of day that they would like to
participate in the course.
Another strength of the distance learning is the collaboration between the instructor and students.
According to Hofmann (2002), some tools or programs such as bulletin boards, chat rooms,
electronic mail, and white boards all encourage students to communicate with their instructor and
each other. Online communication brings students' broad and interesting opinions into the class
bulletin without any hesitation or anxiety. Those who have high anxiety about face–to–face talk or

Numerous variables are involved when it comes to learning. Some people learn better from seeing
things, others through hearing them. Others learn things better by doing them, or through other
medium such as music. How you learn can determine what style of school you should attend. The
Ohio State University would be a traditional classroom setting, whereas the University of Phoenix
would be considered an online school (University of Phoenix ). There are abounding benefits for
each of these styles of learning. The Ohio State University should become a blended school in order
to capitalize on the strengths of both forms of schooling, and recently they have taken steps in this
direction.

In a traditional classroom setting you have set hours in which you can attend, hindering some people
from having the opportunity to attend a traditional campus. When it comes to online schooling you
have complete flexibility. Of course with this flexibility and freedom comes a price. Online students
must be driven enough to complete their assignments alone (Illinois Online Network). Online
students do not have professors or other students reminding them in offhand ways of assignments
they have to complete or tests to study for. A worthy online course should be "a convenient way to
receive their education – not an easier way" (Illinois Online Network).
Hands on experience are one of the main staples of several aspects of art. Graphic
design can be done through a computer program, but that is only one side of art. It would be very

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Distance Education
Distance education has can be a great as well as bad tool to use in the educational system. There are
many pros and cons to both side of the spectrum. In today's world this is the constant struggle
school, education faculties, along with any type of faculties that uses technology. They don't wither
or not to make the transition into technology or to stay in the old ways. One can't blame them either
there are many things that can contribute to a person wanting to reframe transition to newer
technology. These disadvantages consist of lack funds, lack of focus, social problems, accessibility,
and several other problems. In contrast what it has in disadvantages it makes up for in advantages.
Distance learning can provide individuals along with massive corporation with great advantages.
The advantages consist of factors such as flexibility, advancing technology skills, accessibility to
thoughts who may have a tough time making it to class, eliminates some anxiety, better time
efficiency, and allows one to learn at their own pace. In order to asses wither, or not distance
learning is positive or negative one need to have an understanding what exactly distance is.
According to collegescholarships.org learning is only considered distance education when the
teacher and student are not present in the tradition classroom setting. In other words if a student and
professor are not in a face to face situation, in the flesh then it is considered distance education.

Going the Distance: Long Distance Relationships in College...
"Long–distance relationships in college." Does that sound frightening, or does it sound like a poorly
stated joke? Many people believe that long distance relationships are the sole thing that you do not
get yourself into when going off to college. You choose your university, you choose your sorority or
fraternity, you choose your classes, and you chose your major, but whatever you do, you should
never choose to be in a long–distance relationship when heading off to pursue higher education. For
many newly dubbed "adults," college life entails a world full of partying, studying, hooking up, and

that, "75% of college students at some point have been in a long distance relationship," (Penn State

long distance relationship at any given time" (Penn State Behrend: "Long Distance Relationships"

after all. Although abruptly severing ties is not the appropriate response to a grand separation to
come, leaving one another with the idea that both parties are on the exact same page is not a wise
path to take either. A couple does not just simply come to an unspoken consensus about what is
expected of each other. It is important for them to sit down and "engage in open and honest
communication about the separation and discuss what each wants from the relationship" (Penn State
Behrend: "Long Distance Relationships" 1). At the end of the day, miles are temporary, yet
relationships don't have to be. As a long distance relationship progresses, and couples become more
stressed out with studying for exams and keeping up with clubs, they tend to miss each other more
than ever. Longing for the comfort and affection of their significant other, couples can bare the

The Benefits of Distance Learning for University Students

territory that is new and less well known, or completely unknown to you" (Location 36. para 1).
This is notable with leadership in the field of distance education.

They must also have the ability to initiate change and embrace new ideas, stay abreast with
emerging trends, yet remain true to the mission and purpose of distance education, to provide high
quality education, make higher education assessable and affordable, and reach the educationally

about visionary leaders is that they lead by action and communicate their vision in a way that
followers understand the vision, embrace it, and become active followers. What is also noted about
visionary leaders if that they exercise sound judgment, have the ability to create, inspire, empower,
transform, and "create the right atmosphere, the right conditions for others to do their jobs better"
(Carlzon as cited in Westley & Mintzberg, 1989). Distance education needs visionary leaders that
possess these qualities; leaders with integrity who will create the right atmosphere for change as

Despite many advantages and disadvantages of distance education I choose to discuss three main
groups which are involved in the distance learning. The first group is institution, second one is
faculty and the third is students. The institutions which offer a distance education need not build a
big building to accommodate number of students, only need a small studio to telecast the class and
that is enough to reach larger audience, eliminates the commuting costs and promote green
revolution. On the other hand, the institution must acquire state of the art technology for a seamless
and un–interruptive transmission of lecture which might require heavy investment in the beginning.
The faculty might not be trained to teach before a camera and initially they may not perform well.
Finally, the student may not be motivated or vigilant to grasp the lecture easily because of remote
nature of the class and the students may have missing physical component of the instruction. For
example, a student cannot get eye contact of a professor while teaching to show a gesture to initiate

Symbiosis distance learning review
Distance learning for post graduation courses has become a common phenomenon of today. Most of
the people are opting for distance learning as they are busy in their routine work. Some may pursue
a regular job, some busy in handling their own business or some may even consider pursuing their
own interests like photography, painting etc along with continuing their further studies for their own
career improvement. If a student wants to pursue distance learning he must not just go on for any
random institute, but in fact he should opt for those institutes which are affiliated to provide a
genuine degree after completion of the course.
As in today world, a person's relevant years of job experience matters the most regarding career
improvement. From my own perspective, if a person does a full time post graduation course he or

after completion of the course. Even if he or she tries to pursue post graduation while doing job he
or she can take up part time or executive post graduation courses which tend to complete the
syllabus at a very short span of time hence leaving the student with a very narrow subject

Distance Education is known to have many strengths. As a student myself, and I know I can speak

Distance Between Clusters And Nearest Neighbor
Distance between clusters
Nearest neighbor (single linkage). In this measure the similarity between two clusters is defined as
the smallest distance between two objects in different clusters. Distance between cluster A and
cluster B is the minimum amongst the following pairs (1,5), (1,6), (1,7), (2,5), (2,6), and (2,7). In
each iteration, the distance between two different clusters is equal to the distance between its closest
members.
Furthest neighbor (complete linkage). With this similarity measure, the distance between two
different clusters is equal to the maximum amongst all pairs. It is equal to the distance amongst their
members who are the farthest.
UPGMA Using the average linkage method, called UPGMA, the distance between two different
clusters is equal to the average of the distance of all their pairs. This method is usually preferred
over nearest neighbor or farthest neighbor because it encompasses the knowledge of all pairs instead
of focusing on one single pair.
Average linkage within groups. UPGMA considers average of all pairs. The average linkage method
combines clusters in such a way that the average distance in the resulting cluster from all the pairs is
as small as possible. This method is particularly useful when it is computationally expensive to
calculate distances between all pairs.
Ward's method. In each cluster the means for each variable is computed. Then the Euclidean

The solution lies in the distance learning courses. The advantages of distance learning are that it can
be availed from anywhere, right over the Net. You need not leave your job, or your family, or
commute for endless hours to–n–fro the college to maintain attendance.
The advantages of distance learning are many – the most important is that it makes it possible for
anyone who 'missed the bus ' to pursue his/her studies again, without dislocating themselves from
their present lives. This is of paramount importance when the person is question is a single parent, or
tied up with the responsibilities of a family and so on.
One other outstanding advantage of distance learning is that the 'student ' can pursue the studies at
his/her own pace. You do not need to worry about the class attendance; you need not worry about
tight schedules and all that because you can study from the comfort of your own home. You can be
in the 'class ' the moment you log in. It is as easy as that.
There are more advantages of distance learning, such as saving time on commuting, and money of
staying on campus. You can be part of any university/ college no matter how far it is, it could even
be in another country for all that matters, because you need not ever lay a foot on its grounds.

The Importance Of Distance Education
Crimson Scholar once stated, "You will fail to grasp the importance of knowledge without
education." Indeed, with the lack of education, an individual will remain ignorant in the matters of
the world, common sense, and proper etiquette. Regarded as the process of learning and acquisition
of skills, educational methods include lecturing, training, and discussion. Education can take place
in informal settings, and any event can be considered educational as long as it has an impressionable
effect on the way an individual feels, thinks, or acts. Education does not simply refer to on–campus
learning and meeting face–to–face in a classroom that many students are familiar with today.
Although distance education serves as a compelling method to those who have families or careers to
manage, this method can be regarded as a premier invitation for leading society into dystopia.

Online Education Is A Type Of Distance Learning

without attending the campus. Instead students and professors interact over the Internet. It utilizes
the Internet or video conferencing to create learning communities. Course materials are provided on
a Web site and are occasionally found on CD–ROM; email, bulletin boards, forums, and chat rooms
are used to interact with other students and teachers. ("Online Learning?" 2015) In 1873 the first

in Boston, Massachusetts by Ana Eliot Ticknor. Students now have the option of not only obtaining
their education through one of the many online based colleges, but they can also choose from many

Distance education was a product of the great economic and social changes that took place in the
second half of the nineteenth century.
Before starting, it is necessary to know the roots and the particularities of the environment. The most
influential factors in the development and evolution of distance education have been socio–political
systems. Socio–political systems are described as the need to learn scientific advances and as
transformations technologies that involve more than the new generations. Distance learning has
evolved through three main generational stages. Correspondence, telecommunication and telematics.

month to month. You see, we go to colleges in completely different states. We have always lived on
the same street, but now we are so far apart. I don't even know if it will work, or better yet how to
make it work. Any advice? Sad and In Love, Atlanta, GA

I would pretend that it was my boyfriend doing it and then I would think of how I would feel if he
did it. If you would get upset about it, than 10 times out of 10 so would he.
There has to be trust in every important relationship, a relationship won't last if there are doubts on
either end. Always trust that your boyfriend is being honest with you and always be honest with
him.
The next thing a long–distance relationship needs is communication.
Good communication is a MUST! You and your boyfriend have to have open lines of
communication. If something is bothering one of you, you must tell the other how you are feeling. If
you don't be open the other will never know what you are thinking or if there is a problem. Unless of
course you can read minds.
Just kidding! There shouldn't be secrets kept from one another and if there are open communication
lines, it will avoid any types of problems.
Another aspect of communication that is important is expressing your feelings. If you are missing
your boyfriend a lot one day, tell him. It will make him feel good to know that you are thinking of
him and need him. By expressing your feelings, it will keep the relationship open and honest. And
also add a little excitement for the next time you get to see each

Distance Learning Essay

  • 1. Essay about Distance Learning Distance Learning missing works cited Definition and Description of Distance Education Distance education is any academic learning method that lets the teacher and the student participate and communicate in a convenient manner, while sometimes in different places and sometimes at different times. The distance education concept has allowed a diverse set of individuals to continue their education, whether it is for personal or professional satisfaction. The teacher is still able to create, design, and plan with goals and objectives, and the student is able to learn and experience through the distance (Davey, 1999). Another word that is associated with distance learning is multimedia. With the use of multimedia, the learning is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The distance learning involves computer based instruction. This kind of training takes about fifty percent less time then a face–to–face seminar. The text and the graphics, and the time are the incentives for the distance learning. The type of training areas that the businesses specialize in, when using distance education, are information technology, sales, and management training (Corporate distance learning, 1999). Videoconferencing in businesses is also a way that they use distance learning. It was found that with videoconferencing about thirty percent of the time is learner interaction, where the student is asking questions to the experts, working with others, and typing on the keyboard (Hancock, 1999). Hancock also mentions how the American Red Cross uses distance learning to encourage interactivity and "self–directed learning" to create skills such as, leadership and business proficiency. In fact, the American Red Cross has over a sixty percent distance learning involvement, and people were very eager to learn, using this system. Also, companies like Ford and Lucent are successful companies that use distance learning with their training and development departments. Lucent uses the "business television", which is a network used with the human resources department to promote business (1999). • 3. Online Distance Learning Essay Online Distance Learning Throughout the past few decades, online distance learning has become a prevalent method of teaching. Through the use of technology, the field of education has been slightly altered to fit the needs of both the educators and their pupils, by developing a communication system. For example, creating email addresses and generating websites, where the teacher and student can interact. The development of online distance learning is beneficial to the future of education because it provides more opportunity for students. What exactly does "online distance learning" mean? "A type of education where students work independently and communicate with faculty and other students via computer based communication" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Along with distance learning comes flexibility, convenience, and reliability. For example, there are never interruptions because the class is web based and students can complete assignments based on their individual schedules. "Online education is possibly the biggest event in American intellectual life in the past forty years," stated Gerald A. Heeger. This statement expresses how significant distance learning has become in society. Contrary to the advantages of distance learning there are a few, minor drawbacks to this style of learning. Unfortunately, virtual campuses are based on economic profit rather than educational purposes. "Online Professors can't witness student's body language. If I can't see the faces, I can't know anything about them" (Vicchio, Stephen). Since there is no face–to–face communication, instructors cannot see the student's reactions, which can result in confusion among the subject being discussed. In contrast to the traditional classroom setting, which teaches students to interact with one another, distance learning unfortunately takes away this value. Sitting in front of a computer, usually surrounded by family, does not allow the student to practice social learning. "As children grow up in an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Distance Education Essay Distance education has changed and grown a lot from external studies and correspondence education during the last century. Distance education has become a recognized phenomenon today, thanks to technology which has shortened the physical distances. DEVELOPMENT OF DISTANCE EDUCATION The evolution of Distance education could be divided in four periods. The first period was from 1850 to 1960, this generation used correspondence classes which used radio and instructional television. The second period was from 1960 to 1985. This generation highlights because of the use of multiple technologies for example; fax, print cassettes, radio and videos. The third period was from 1985 to 1995. This period is characterized for the use of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sometimes those were delayed for weeks. "Professor plus" was another way of DE in these time. The professor was a television instructor in an on–campus class and the plus was an assistant who was in the classroom and provided assistance to the students. Then class cessions began to be prerecorded for those who for some reason had miss class. This videos were mailed also to the students who lived in remote zones. As Distance Education continued progressing, teachers at the same time had to improve their televised teaching; for example, during the broadcast teaching the instructors had to repeat the questions and the corresponding answer. The instructors also learned how to help the distance students to feel like they were part of the class by looking directly to the cameras. Teachers learned how to do not talk too fast and not too slowly; they also learned to short the content presentations by editing down the videotaped classes. But, the most effective strategy that they used to do a good job was the constant evaluation to the program as evolved, to make it better. The look of DE changed with the coming–in of the internet and the affordable access to the personal computers. since that time this program has been developed over. • 7. The Impact Of Distance Education On Education Advances in technology helped form a new type of education. This type of education is an alternative to the more traditional approach to education. Some individuals oppose the new form of learning stating that it is ineffective. While those who favor it assert that it's a type of learning that is beneficial to students. This new form of learning commonly occurs exclusively through cyberspace and is referred to as distance education. Distance education is a type of education that combines typical teaching methods with technology to instruct students who aren't physically present like in a more traditional classroom setting. "Online degrees and online colleges are becoming more prevalent and popular with students' increased access to the Internet. A growing number of students enroll in at least some online courses while studying for their degree." (Explorer 233). Some individuals believe that distance education isn't as successful or beneficial as traditional education because students don't receive the same face to face interaction like they do in a classroom. People presume that distance education isn't successful because "college students in online courses fail and drop out more often than students in classroom–based courses." (Maxwell 214). What they don't take into consideration is why an online college course may have a higher fail rate. For instance, students typically fail a class because the class might be overly difficult for the student to comprehend. Other times ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Distance Learning Essay Distance Learning Distance learning (education) has become an integral part of the education process over the past few decades and is growing in popularity as technology advances.(Willis 1992) describes distance education (as) "the organizational framework andprocess of providing instruction at a distance. Distance education takes place when ateacher and student(s) are physically separated, and technology...(is) used to bridge theinstruction gap." (Coutts 1996). Furthermore, "distance learning activities are designedto fit the specific context for learning, the nature of the subject matter; intended learningoutcomes, needs and goals of the learner, the learner's environment and the instructional echnologies and methods." (American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also technological decisions should be based on instructional content, the need for involvement, and the particular learning outcomes desired. (Counts 1996) "There is some evidence that the success of distance education in schools depends largely on the effectiveness of the teacher, and that this is in turn depends on the teacher's knowledge, skills, enthusiasm, and commitment to innovation." (Moore & Thompson 1990). When planning distance education, Willis (1998) lists a few factors to consider: Distance education is about increasing access, not saving money. The technical, logistical and support costs can be very high. Therefore, the financial aspects must be considered. Nothing should be assumed. Decisions should be based on definable problems and tangible customer needs. A needs assessment, though time consuming, may be worth the time to complete. Realize that good plans are never finished. Rather than wait until all issues are resolved and a long– term plan in place, resolve the immediate issues, get started, and follow an approach that enables you to do short– and intermediate–term planning while completing the tasks at hand. Share assumptions with stakeholders. Too often administrators and technologists make distance delivery decisions without the informed participation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Research On The Distance Learning Student Essay Research on the Distance Learning Student Ting Wang Emporia State University In Sahin's research (2008), he was trying to find if the selection of technologies chosen for online learning could be used to reflect learners' preferences and related characteristics. According to the research among 279 students in five online undergraduate courses, the Moore's Transactional Distance Theory may connect with Kolb's theory, which means three dimensions learning may link with two–dimensional views of individual learning styles. At last, the author recommends combining the all dimensions learning technologies to meet learning requirements. As more researchers and instructors realized that characteristics might affect people's learning efficiency, they paid more attention to "student–centered" learning/instruction style. There are several characteristics that may have influence on choosing appropriate instruction content and course structure, such as gender, age and cognitive styles. One of the most important characteristics is the learning method a learner prefers. Learning Style Inventory (LSI) is an instrument to identify different learning experiences. This instrument was developed based on Experiential Learning Theory (ELT). Evaluation is an important part in distance education to evaluate the effectiveness of learning activities. In other words, if a student and professor are not in a face to face situation, in the flesh then it is considered distance education. Most of the time distance education takes place on a personal computer on the internet or some type of program that allows the student to link via electronically to their professor along with their other classmates. • 17. Disadvantages Of Delivering Distance Learning On The... Education is also been effected by this global network. There are many online organizations that provide an online access to educational materials. For example Khan Academy which is a non– profit organization created in 2006, with a goal of providing a collection of online tools to improve students that seek for these materials. It features over 2,100 educational videos for basic math problems like 1+1=2 to a college level calculus and physics (the next web). These online educational tools are not just nation wise but also on a global level. For example a student can register for a summer online class at HCC and spend his whole summer overseas, the internet enable him to have fun with his vacation with making sure he will be able to do all the assigned assignments for his class. Distance learning (DL) depends totally on the Internet and the World Wide Web. And could not be operated without it. Advantages of delivering distance learning on the Internet include the following: place and time flexibility; potential to extend and reach a global audience; used with mostly any electronic; quick and easy updating of content; and usually lower cost for operating. (Kerka, Sandra, ERIC.edu). Before the internet era, books were the only source of information, so if a student wanted to write a paper for his class, he had to look in different libraries for books that contains concepts related to his argument. This will take time and effort. The internet came with a new sets of actual books and articles, but in the form of an online documents. These online books are trustful and garneted for the most part. Results from a survey of 236 students over 2 years showed that the Internet can facilitate a good educational practices. Students believe that the use of email to contact encouraged an active learning environment. They also believe that the Internet materials allow more efficient use of time in and out of the classroom, and improve their learning. (Michael E. Ritter, Taylor & Francis online). The survey showed that "Less than a third of the respondents expected the quality of the on–line courses to be as good as the classroom course."(7) Barszcz strongly produces yet another illustration: "Regardless of their expectations or desires," (7) Fairleigh Dickinson University students, "are now required to take one DL course per year."(7) This is supposed to give students the skills necessary to function properly in today's technological age. Conversely, he explains that these universities are more interested in making money that preparing their students for the future. He stresses the value of face to face interaction between the students and the faculty. Being late to a class, or missing an assignment has a stronger effect if the student has to personally interact with the instructor. Barszcz defines the word education as a process of "drawing out", stating that campus life can "draw out, from within a person, qualities of intellect and character that would have otherwise remained hidden or dormant." • 51. Going the Distance: Long Distance Relationships in College... "Long–distance relationships in college." Does that sound frightening, or does it sound like a poorly stated joke? Many people believe that long distance relationships are the sole thing that you do not get yourself into when going off to college. You choose your university, you choose your sorority or fraternity, you choose your classes, and you chose your major, but whatever you do, you should never choose to be in a long–distance relationship when heading off to pursue higher education. For many newly dubbed "adults," college life entails a world full of partying, studying, hooking up, and experimenting (whatever that may entail). College is the place where both guys and girls get a chance to possibly escape from their home towns, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The least they can do is try to continue their relationship with long distance. It has been reported that, "75% of college students at some point have been in a long distance relationship," (Penn State Behrend: "Long Distance Relationships" 1). In addition, "25% to 50% of college students are in a long distance relationship at any given time" (Penn State Behrend: "Long Distance Relationships" 1). Couples that identify with the idea that there is no hurt in trying, find that it might not be so bad after all. Although abruptly severing ties is not the appropriate response to a grand separation to come, leaving one another with the idea that both parties are on the exact same page is not a wise path to take either. A couple does not just simply come to an unspoken consensus about what is expected of each other. It is important for them to sit down and "engage in open and honest communication about the separation and discuss what each wants from the relationship" (Penn State Behrend: "Long Distance Relationships" 1). At the end of the day, miles are temporary, yet relationships don't have to be. As a long distance relationship progresses, and couples become more stressed out with studying for exams and keeping up with clubs, they tend to miss each other more than ever. Longing for the comfort and affection of their significant other, couples can bare the distance by scheduling visits to one another. University students scrape by each day just to ... Despite many advantages and disadvantages of distance education I choose to discuss three main groups which are involved in the distance learning. The first group is institution, second one is faculty and the third is students. The institutions which offer a distance education need not build a big building to accommodate number of students, only need a small studio to telecast the class and that is enough to reach larger audience, eliminates the commuting costs and promote green revolution. On the other hand, the institution must acquire state of the art technology for a seamless and un–interruptive transmission of lecture which might require heavy investment in the beginning. The faculty might not be trained to teach before a camera and initially they may not perform well. Finally, the student may not be motivated or vigilant to grasp the lecture easily because of remote nature of the class and the students may have missing physical component of the instruction. For example, a student cannot get eye contact of a professor while teaching to show a gesture to initiate a question. Most of the people are opting for distance learning as they are busy in their routine work. Some may pursue a regular job, some busy in handling their own business or some may even consider pursuing their own interests like photography, painting etc along with continuing their further studies for their own career improvement. Many students would rather take college courses online rather than walk to class, or have to drive to the campus. In this measure the similarity between two clusters is defined as the smallest distance between two objects in different clusters. Distance between cluster A and cluster B is the minimum amongst the following pairs (1,5), (1,6), (1,7), (2,5), (2,6), and (2,7). In each iteration, the distance between two different clusters is equal to the distance between its closest members. Furthest neighbor (complete linkage). With this similarity measure, the distance between two different clusters is equal to the maximum amongst all pairs. It is equal to the distance amongst their members who are the farthest. UPGMA Using the average linkage method, called UPGMA, the distance between two different clusters is equal to the average of the distance of all their pairs. This method is usually preferred over nearest neighbor or farthest neighbor because it encompasses the knowledge of all pairs instead of focusing on one single pair. Average linkage within groups. UPGMA considers average of all pairs. The average linkage method combines clusters in such a way that the average distance in the resulting cluster from all the pairs is as small as possible. This method is particularly useful when it is computationally expensive to calculate distances between all pairs. Ward's method. In each cluster the means for each variable is computed. Then the Euclidean distance of each member from this means is calculated. These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
