This document summarizes literature on the use of e-portfolios in higher education. It finds that 57% of US postsecondary institutions make some use of e-portfolios, and discusses benefits like supporting learning trajectories, acknowledging diversity, and fostering digital literacy. However, implementing e-portfolios faces challenges, such as reflection not automatically resulting from portfolio creation. Different types of portfolios are outlined, including documentation, process, and showcase portfolios. The literature review covers 2004-2014 peer-reviewed articles on e-portfolios in higher education contexts. Barriers, tools, assessment, reflection, and conclusions are also addressed.
