Difference between a pandemic, an epidemic, endemic, and an outbreakBarryAllen149
The distinction between the concepts “pandemic,” “epidemic,” and “endemic” is typically dimmed, also by medical specialists. Because the definition of each term is liquid, and it varies as diseases become more or less prevalent over time. In conversation, maybe this is less important to know the exact definitions but to understand the overall condition of public health news and responses you should know the concepts.

The value of real-world evidence for clinicians and clinical researchers in t...Arete-Zoe, LLC
In the midst of a rapidly spreading global pandemic, real-world evidence can offer invaluable insight into the most promising treatments, risk factors, and not only predict but suggest how to improve outcomes. Despite overwhelming news coverage, significant knowledge gaps regarding COVID-19 persist. The current uncertainties regarding incidence and the case fatality rate can only be addressed by widespread testing. But the paucity of testing, and diversity of approaches implemented in different countries, particularly among the general asymptomatic public, perpetuates a lack of understanding about spread and infectivity. The essential indicators that would describe the pandemic more accurately can be obtained using real-world data (RWD). To that purpose, we designed a data collection tool to collect data from hospitals that treat COVID-19 patients. The captured data will enhance our understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic, identify risk factors relevant for triage, relate to other similar seasonal infections and gain insight into the safety and efficacy of experimental and off-label therapies. Knowledge derived from a focused data collection effort will enable clinicians to adjust rapidly clinical protocols and discontinue interventions that turn out to be ineffective or harmful. By deploying our elegantly designed survey to capture routine clinical indicators, we avoid placing an additional burden on practitioners. Systematically generating real-world evidence can decrease the time to insight compared to randomized clinical trials, improving the odds for patients in rapidly changing conditions.

The Gibraltar COVID-19 Cohort: Determining the True Incidence and Severity Ra...asclepiuspdfs
COVID-19 is a new infectious disease with an unclear incidence and an unknown rate of progression to severe disease. The Gibraltar COVID-19 Cohort utilises two distinct cohorts - a clinical cohort and a random population based cohort -, to provide an accurate assessment of case severity rate. Design: Retrospective analysis of a SARS-CoV2 RT-PCR point prevalence study and a RT-PCR confirmed positive clinical case cohort to calculate case severity rates. Settings and Participants: Over a three day period nasopharyngeal swabs were sampled from a randomly selected 1.2% of the population of Gibraltar and then analysed via RT-PCR to determine the background incidence of COVID-19 infection. The results were then analysed and compared to the clinical case cohort. The rate of progression to severe COVID-19 disease in those with COVID-19 infection was then calculated.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL INDICES
Indices or Parameters – They are factors needed to measure the TB problems in a community, as well
as to plan and to evaluate control measures.
Indices are also required for international comparison.
These following epidemiological indices are generally used in TB problem measurement and programme
strategy.
1. INCIDENCE
2. PREVALENCE
3. MORTALITY
4. CARE FATALITY RATE
5.CASE NOTIFICATION RATE
6. CASE DETECTION RATE
7. PREVALENCE OF DRUG-RESISTANT CASES
8. INCIDENCE OF INFECTION
9. PREVALENCE OF INFECTION
3. 1. INCIDENCE
It is defined as number of new and recurrent (relapse) episodes of all forms
of TB occuring in a given year.
Recurrent episodes- defined as new episode of TB in people, who have had TB
in the past and for whom there was bacteriological confirmation of cure or
documentation that treatment was completed.
Relapse cases are referred to add recurrent cases because that term is more
useful in explaining estimation of TB incidence.
Recurrent cases maybe True Relapses or new episode of TB caused by
reinfection
But people with a continuing episode of TB that requires a treatment
change are considered as PREVALENCE, not incident cases.
In current case definitions, both relapse cases and patient who require a
chamge in treatment are considered as “RETREATMENT CASES”.
4. 2. Prevalence
Prevalence is defined as the number of all forms of TB cases at a given
point in time.
It is the best available practical index to estimate the case load in a
community.
Age specific Prevalence – Of patients is considered as the best and most
relevant Index.
5. 3. Mortality
Mortality from TB is defines as number of deaths caused by TB in HIV-
negative people, according to the latest revision of International
Classification of Diseases(ICD-10).
HIV Negative people are considered, because HIV positive people’s
deaths are considered as HIV deaths in (ICD-10).
For this reason, estimate of death in HIV negative people are seperately
measured from those in HIV positive.
It is calculated in unit deaths/lakh population.
6. 4. Case fatality rate
It is defined as risk of death due to TB from people with active TB
disease.
7. 5. Case Notification Rate
It refers to new and recurrent episodes of TB notified to WHO for a
given year., expressed per 1 lakh population.
The case notification rate for new and recurrent TB is important for
estimation of TB incidence.
However, in some countries, information on treatment history maybe
missing in some cases.
Im such condition, recurrent cases cant be distinguished from cases
whose treatment was changed.
Since both are registered and reported in category “RETREATMENT”.
Patients reported in the unknown history category are considered in
incident TB episodes (new or relapse).
8. 6. Case detection Rate
It is calculated as number of notinfication of new and relapse cases in a
year divided by the estimated incidence of such cases in a same year.
9. 7 Prevalence of Drug-Resistant Cases
It is the prevalence of patients excreting tubercle bacilli resistant to anti-TB drugs.
This index is directly related to chemotherapy.
(a) Prevalence Of Infection
. It is % of individuals who show a postive reaction to the STANDARD TUBERCULIN TEST.
When the same test is done in defined age-groups, it yields age specific prevalence, which
is a far more superior indicator.
It must be noted that Tuberculin test interpretation has become much complicated in
countries with high BCG vaccination coverage at birth, because all vaccines become positive
reactors to Tuberculin test.
This becomes a problem in identifying true prevalence of infection.
Further cross-sensitivity to an atypical mycobacteria, where it occurred had also caused the
prevalence index to be overestimated.
Even though these disadvantages, Tuberculin test is widely used for estimating prevalence of
TB infection in a population.
10. (b) Incidence Of Infection
Also known as annual infection Rate.
It is the % of population under study, who will be infected by M. tuberculosis,
among the non-infected of the preceding survey, during the course of one
year.
It reflects the ANNUAL RISK OF being infected (or reinfected) in a
community.
Simply, it expresses the attacking force of TB pathogen in a community.
Also known as Tuberculin Conversion Index, this parameter is considered one
of the best indicators for evaluating tuberculosis problem and its trend.
Higher the rate, larger is the problem.
In a good treatment programme, lowers the risk of TB infection in a
community
