 Wheat production may fall by 4 per cent during the 2014-15 crop year
from record 95.85 million tonnes in the previous year as the crop was
affected due to the recent unseasonal rains and hailstorms."Wheat
production could be lower by 4 per cent from last year,The Agriculture
Ministry, in its second advanced estimate released in February, had
projected wheat output at 95.76 MT during 2014-15 crop year (July-
June) as against 95.85 MT in the previous year.However, the unseasonal
rains and hailstorms witnessed during March-April this year in various
states affected the rabi crops, including wheat."According to initial
reports received from various states after unseasonal rains...the estimates
show wheat production could drop by 4-5 per cent this year.India is the
world's second largest producer of wheat. Unseasonal rains and
hailstorms from February 28 till March 31 have affected crops in over 10
states, including major wheat producing states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab
and Haryana.As on May 5, 2015 an estimated 18.23 million hectares
under crops were affected in the country due to unseasonal rains and
hailstorms.
 High Plains region in Texas is the beneficiary of the El Nino weather
pattern, which is promising news for this year’s cotton crop. El Nino,
which is the warming of the surface water in eastern and central Pacific
ocean will result in good chance of above normal precipitation this
planting season and Fall this year. Rainfall, coupled with low
temperature, will be beneficial for the cotton crop. the probability of
experiencing extreme hot summer is low unlike 2011 when there was a
continuous spell of 30 days of summer with temperature above 100
degree Fahrenheit.and High Plains region in the past week had witnessed
over an inch of rainfall with some places reaching as high as 10 inches.
Lubbock and the surrounding cotton growing areas are witnessing
showers, which have made most of the High Plains to be out of drought
condition. only 16% of Texas is in drought situation while California is
witnessing severe drought,producers have to plant in High Plains by
early June, the wet weather might be a concern in some places.
 Spot Chana witnessed some buying today amid very thing arrivals
though a continued moderation in the demand for other pulses is expected
to weigh on the sentiments. Chana arrivals dropped in Delhi in last few
days as supplies from Rajasthan and MP are moderating. The supplies
dropped to just 20 trucks today after coming in at 30 trucks yesterday. Spot
Chana trades at Rs 4635 per quintal, up Rs 30 per quintal in Delhi. Reports
are stating that crop which was sown early is likely to have endured some
losses following the unseasonal rains. The spot prices have dropped this
week from their highest mark in last two and half years.
 Spot markets witnessed some buying today after the recent drop in spot
prices under Rs 8000 mark. Turmeric stays supported as growers are
refusing to sell at lower levels. Traders are expecting further decline in the
coming days due to possibility of new supplies from other producing states,
primarily in Karnataka in near term. Spot prices are quoting at Rs 7966 per
quintal, up Rs 40 per quintal on the day.
 Guarseed stayed steady as stockists bought the commodity after a recent
correcton. The IMD noted that the south-west Monsoon is expected to hit
the country on time this year, arriving in Kerala on June 1st this year.
Though rainfall may remain below normal, prompting the government to
put in place a contingency plan and push crop insurance for farmers,
according to media reports. Monsoon is expected to be below normal due to
El Nino factor.The spot guarseed markets witnessed a drop in arrivals but
the prices failed to extend their recent gains after hitting a one year high in
the last week. The commodity gained today but the rally is unlikely to
sustain as traders eye the weather patterns.
 Coriander prices stayed supported in Kota amid excellent demand from
stockists. Spot prices had surged above Rs 10000 per quintal mark last
week amid worries that rainfall in Rajasthan would affect the quality of the
crop arriving in local mandies. The commodity has been on an upward
trajectory in last few days on lack of good quality crops even as arrivals
remained steady.

COTTON ARRIVALS AT KEY SPOT
MARKET
National Market Update
 Cotton production in India would be on lower side in 2015-16, said USDA.
Cotton output in the country would be around 6.423 million ton in the coming
season, slightly lower than when compared to the current season which would
be around 6.523 million tones. Acreage of cotton in India would shrink in the
coming season to 12 million hectares from 12.7 million hectares in the current
season. Yield of cotton would be higher at 535 kg per hectare in the coming
season as compared to 514 kg per hectare in the current season. Around 88
percent of cotton has arrived in the market as on 28 April, 2015 said CCI.
According to CCI approximately 34 million bales of cotton (roughly 88
percent of production estimates for MY 2014/15) has been arrived in the
market till the mentioned date which was 33.41 million bales during the
corresponding period last year. Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has sold
1.08 million bales of cotton until May 7 this year from its stock procured
under MSP operation. According to the officials this is the highest offloading
of stock since 2012-13. On daily basis, CCI is releasing 70,000-75,000 bales
of cotton in domestic market. Despite the lower production world cotton
expected to rise in the coming season i.e. 2015-16 following thehigher demand
from SouthAsian countries.
 World cotton production is likely to decline in 2015-16 following the fall in
area and yield, said USDA. According to the first estimate for 2015/16
released on May 12, cotton production on the global front is likely to stand
around 24.22 million tons in 2015-16 around 6.73% lower when compared to
the estimated production for season 2014-15 which is 25.97 million tons.
Cotton acreage on global front would be around 31.77 million hectares around
6.09 percent lower when compared to acreage of current season which was
33.83 million hectares. Yield in the coming season according to USDA would
be around 763 kg per hectares around 0.65 percent lower when compared to
the yield of current season which was 768 kg per hectares.
