 Maharashtra's economy is expected to grow at a slower rate in
2014-15, compared with the previous year, the economic survey
presented in the state legislature, on Tuesday, The state's economy is
slated to grow at 5.7% which is lower than last fiscal's 7.3%, the
survey noted, attributing the fall to an 8.5% contraction in
agriculture,exacerbated by an inadequate monsoon. However, the
industry and service sec tors held out hope for the state, with likely
growth of 4% and 8.1%, respectively in 201415. Most districts in the
state received only abou 70% of the annual average rainfall, affecting
agriculture and allied activities. Finance minis ter Sudhir
Mungantiwar toldthe state assembly that contraction in agricultural
growth has af fected the state's economic performance. Agri culture
and associated activities fared poorly mainlybecause of the bad
monsoon in many parts of the state last year as well as in 2013, bu
the industry, especially the service sector, has done well in this
period. The GrossState Domestic Product (GSDP) was pegged at Rs
8,96,768 crore during 2013-14, against Rs 8,35,929 crore in 2012-13,
showing a growth of 7.3%, as per the firstrevised estimates.The
average consumer price index in the state for the period between
April and December 2014 for rural areas was up by 3.5% , while that
of ur ban areas was up by 4%, year on year. The year on-year rate of
inflation based on all-India wholesale price index declined
drastically.The survey says deficient rainfall in 226talukas in the
state affected production of grains and other agricultural produce.
Also, sowing of kharif crop was delayed, while rabi crop was hit by
erratic rainfall in September and October. Production of foodgrains is
also expected to be hit in the 2014-15 season compared to the
previous year. Production oilseeds and some othe produce may also
suffer.Mungantiwar informed the assembly tha from August 1991 to
October 2014, a total of 18,709 proposals with investment worth Rs
10,63,342 crore were approved.
 Turmeric surged today after falling to a one month low in last session as
upcountry demand is expected to support sentiments in near term. However,
over a medium term, traders are expecting further decline in the coming days
due to possibility of new supplies from other producing states, primarily in
Karnataka in near term. Spot prices are quoting at Rs 7875 per quintal, up Rs
105 per quintal on the day.
 Some stable moves were seen in Guar today. Poor demand owing to weak
exports is hitting sentiments in guar. Global crude oil prices are lingering at
their six year lows and not much of an upside is expected in guar unless crude
picks up from these levels. Gum export demand is very weak amid the rout in
crude prices. Local millers have heavy stocks with them. Spot guar is quoting at
Rs 3700 per quintal in Jodhpur- its lowest level in nearly one year.
 Mustardmeal demand remains thin. Major Mustardseed producing areas have
been witnessing rainfall for last few days though last couple of days have been
clear. Next few days would offer an assessment of the status of the crop. If the
skies stay like this then some correction could set in the market. Buying is thin
today as traders are expecting not much of an impact on the standing crop. As
per the latest estimate from Mustard Oil Producers Association (MOPA, the
total mustard seed crop is likely to be around 57.40 lakh tonnes in 2014-15
against 65 lakh tonnes of last year in the same period.The commodity is quoting
at Rs 3458 per quintal in Jaipur, down Rs 14 per quintal on the day.
 Delhi Chana is trading mixed though sentiments are still being dominated by
the recent rainfall. The overall sentiments still remain mixed and traders are
likely to be in a wait and watch mode before the arrivals pick up strength.
Reports are stating that crop which was sown early is likely to have endured
some losses. In Delhi markets, the arrivals came in at 25 trucks as compared to
40 trucks in last session.

COTTON ARRIVALS AT KEY SPOT

National Market Update
 India exported 1.81 lakh bales of cotton last week (09-15 Mar 2015), which was
1.70 lakh bales previous to last week (02-08 Mar 2015), according to the data released
by IBIS. Imports on the other hand stood 0.17 lakh bales last week, which was 0.16
lakh bales previous to last week.Cotton price at NCDEX climbed more than two
month high on Monday (16 March 2015) following the announcement of lower
production estimates by CAI, unseasonal rainfall, depleting stocks and expectation of
lower acreage in the coming season April contract of kapas at NCDEX touched the
high of Rs 781 per maund (20kg each) which was level last seen on January 09 this
year. Domestic cotton prices are on track of recovery. Weekly average price of cotton
in Gujarat stood Rs. 3900 per quintal, around 4.14% higher when compared to the
average price during previous to last week, which was Rs 3745. Cotton Association of
India revised the cotton output estimates downwardly for the country at 397 lakh bales
which was earlier estimated at 400.25 lakh bales in December 2014. The cause of the
fall in output is decline in production estimates for central region including Gujarat,
Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. According to CAI cotton consumption would stand
around 306 lakh bales this season compared to 300.68 lakh bales in 2013-14. Cotton
imports according to CAI latest estimates would be around 13 lakh bales this season,
around 10.64% higher when compared to the imports of previous season which was
11.75 lakh bales. India exported 1.70 lakh bales of cotton last week (02-08 Mar 2015),
which was 2.34 lakh bales previous to last week (23 Feb-01 Mar 2015), Imports on
the other hand stood 0.16 lakh bales last week, which was 0.09 lakh bales previous to
last week.
 China imported 159,100 metric tons of cotton in February this year, 35.3% lower
when compared to imports during the same month previous year, according to
customs data cited by China Cotton Association (CCA).Cotton planting area in China
this year is likely to drop by 23 percent this year compared to previous year, according
to the latest survey reports by China Cotton Association (CCA). Earlier CCA expected
cotton area to shrink by 25.4 percent in its January estimates. The rise in the figures
this month is the result of expectation of higher cotton area in Xinjiang. According to
the industry experts, Chinese cotton farmers are likely to replace cultivation of non-
organi cotton with organic cotton as it fetches the better margins and its demand in
international market is likely to manifold by 2020.
