 India's foodgrains production is estimated to have declined by 5.25 per
cent to 251.12 million tonnes in 2014-15 crop year due to poor monsoon
and unseasonal rain in past two months.The country had registered a
record foodgrain production of 265.04 million tonnes in 2013-14 crop
year (July-June). Wheat, rice, coarse cereals and pulses are part of
foodgrain basket.While releasing the third advance estimates for 2014-
15, the Agriculture Ministry today said the production of most of the
crops fell because of bad monsoon in 2014 and unseasonal
rains/hailstorms during March-April 2015 that affected kharif (summer-
sown) and rabi (winter-sown) crops.Rice production is estimated to have
fallen to 102.54 million tonnes in 2014-15 against the record output of
106.65 million tonnes in the previous year.It may, however, be noted that
wheat and rice stocks with government are 51.17 million tonnes as of
May this year, as against buffer norm of 21 million tonnes as of April
2015.The ministry has revised downwards the production of foodgrains
as well as that of rice and wheat from its earlier estimates released on
February 18 this year. Foodgrains output was then pegged at 257.07
million tonnes; rice at 103.04 million tonnes and wheat at 95.76 million
tonnes."It may be noted that production of kharif crops during 2014-15
suffered due to bad monsoon. Unseasonal rains/ hailstorm during Feb-
March 2015 had significant impact on production of rabi crops.India had
received 12 per cent deficient rains in south west monsoon in
2014."Total foodgrains production in the country is estimated at 251.12
million tonnes (MT) which is lower by 13.92 MT than the last year's
record foodgrains production of 265.04 MT."Coarse cereals output is
estimated at 40.42 MT, down by 2.87 MT in the previous year, while
pulses production is likely to have dipped by 1.87 MT to 17.38 MT. The
total production of coarse cereals, estimated at 40.42 MT, is lower by
2.87 MT.Pegged at 17.38MT, the output of pulses is lower 1.87 million
tonnes.Oilseed production is estimated at 27.38 million tones, a decrease
of 5.37 million tonnes.
 Turmeric futures managed to end with moderate gains on short covering
triggered by weak production estimations. T Slight rainfall in Erode capped
the gains for Turmeric today. Turmeric has stayed supported off late as
growers are refusing to sell at lower levels. Traders are expecting further
decline in the coming days due to possibility of new supplies from other
producing states, primarily in Karnataka in near term. Andhra Agri
University reported that Tamil Nadu and Karnataka recorded lower acreage
in turmeric last year, down by 6-10 percent year-on-year due to delayed
monsoon and poor price realization in the previous year along with
concerns over crop loss due to cyclone Hudhud that hit the state of Andhra
Pradesh in October, 2014. The extended monsoon has further reduced the
prospect of good production in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and
Karnataka. Thus the production is likely to be down by about 15-18 per
cent compared with last year. Turmeric prices are likely to firm up in the
coming months on short supply and robust demand. The existing stocks
stand at 40 lakh bags in India and the expected output this year (2015) is
37-38 lakh bags. The turmeric futures dropped from the high on long
liquidation amid arrival pressure from the new crop. The June delivery off
the high of Rs 9060 and found support at Rs 8166 level. The counter ended
the day at Rs 8244, up Rs 24 or 0.29% over last close and the open interest
pared 235 tonnes to 33,285 tonnes, indicating short covering.
 NCDEX Coriander futures edged up today in what is turning out to be a
thinly tradedsession for agri commodities. Coriander prices stayed
supported in Kota amid excellentdemand from stockists. Spot prices had
surged above Rs 10000 per quintal mark last weekamid worries that rainfall
in Rajasthan would affect the quality of the crop arriving inlocal mandies.
The commodity has been on an upward trajectory in last few days on lack
ofgood quality crops even as arrivals remained steady. The Spot prices
linger at Rs 9900 perquintal in Kota, up Rs 40 per quintal on the day. The
counter had tested lows near Rs 10400per quintal earlier in the week – its
lowest levels in nearly three weeks beforesupportive spot markets triggered
good upside.

National Market Update
 Castor cash markets traded firm taking clue from futures as buyers in
futures continue to build up stock in forward months. Planters increased
interest on higher price too lent support to cash market fundamental. However,
market is unlikely to sustain at higher level. Agriculture statistics Division,
DES has released Third Adv estimates of Production of foodgrains for 2014-
15 on 13.05 2015.It has revised castor production estimate down by 87
thousand tonne to 18.24 lakh tonne.In second Adv Est. castor production was
estimated at 19.11 lakh tonne.The minor decrease in third Adv . Est is mainly
attributed to inclement weather and yield loss. India has produced 17.27 lakh
tonne castor seed in 2013-14.Target for the year was 16.65 lakh tonne. Castor
meal export during last week(20 to 1st Mat 8th May,2015 was registered at
16774 MT on average FOB price of $118 per MT. Taiwan, Korea and Japan
remained the major buyers last week. Shipment is likely toincrease in the
month of May. Castor oil FOb Kandla decreased from$1205 to $1190 per
tonne this week despite improved seed price. However it is ruling lower
by15.85 percent in comparison to May 2014.It was ruling$1396 per tonne in
April 2014.However,oil price in local market has decreased from Rs 76500 to
rs 75,500 per tonne as demand from local industries is poor at this point of
time.Castor Oil commercial is being traded at 76500 per tonne, almost Rs
1000 higher from the fourth week of April. It is almost 7.60 percent lower than
price realized in April.
 The weak economic scenario in China and Europe has reflected in castor oil
export volume in 2014. China imported 24 percent lower oil in 2014
incomparison to 2013.However, good news is that improvement by 15 percent
is expected now. Castor oil in Rotterdam decreased from $1700 to $1525 per
tonne in last one month and may touch $1500 per tonne in the month of
March. Pressure on Indian market and decreasing trend continue to impact
global market in the weeks ahead.
