1.1 Storage and use of Fuels, Oils and Chemicals
Fuels, oils and chemicals will be stored and used to prevent pollution as follows:

1. Storage areas for fuels, oils and chemicals will be located away from
heavily trafficked areas. If this is not possible the fuels, oils and chemicals
will be protected from damage by vehicle impact.
2. Tanks for fuels, oils and chemicals will be bunded with all pipe work kept
inside the bund. Bunds containing more than 200 litres of oil, fuel or other
liquids will hold 110% of the largest tanks capacity. Fuel dispensing hoses
should be fitted with automatic cut-off valves. The area around the tanks
and bunds will be concreted and graded so that spills can be contained and
easily cleaned up.
3. Drums will be kept in a bund or drip tray in a designated area, with a
designated area for empty drums awaiting removal from site
4. Small containers of liquids will be kept in a location where they will not
cause pollution if accidentally split
5. Bags and sacks of materials will be kept off the ground on pallets in a
designated area and covered
6. All containers will be labelled with their contents and capacity

Refuelling
1. Bulk refuelling of tanks will be supervised by a nominated and competent
personnel

1.2 Storage and use of Vehicles, Plant and Equipment
Vehicles, Plant and equipment will be stored , used and maintained to prevent pollution as follows:

1. Engines will be turned off when not in use (this also reduces fuel

2. Drip trays will be placed under any vehicle, plant or equipment that is
leaking oil or fluid and the item will be serviced immediately to repair the
leak

4. Electrically powered plant will be used, instead of diesel or petrol-
powered plant where practicable
5. Doors and covers on plant and vehicles will be kept shut
6. If excessive smoke is emitted from any vehicle, plant or equipment the
item must be serviced immediately. If this does not rectify the problem the
item will be removed from site

Maintenance of vehicles, plant and equipment
1. Vehicles and plant will be regularly maintained
2. Maintenance of vehicles, plant and equipment that may be easily removed
from site will not take place on site but off-site in a proper workshop

any leaks and spills.
4. Vehicles, plant and equipment will not be washed down on site, except to
remove any mud/soil before leaving the site in order to keep the roads. A

1.3 Noise and Vibration
Construction activities will be managed as follows to minimise noise emissions and the risk of nuisance to the local communities::

jackets.

Dust and Air Quality

1.6 Waste
A working file will be maintained to keep records of waste disposed to include date: time, type of waste and approximate quantity of waste and

where possible on a concrete hard standing to keep the area clean
3. Bins will be provided for rubbish generated by construction workers
4. Waste will be removed from buildings as they are constructed via
waste chutes. These chutes should be made of a material such as
plastic which is quieter

Contractor and taken to a municipality approved landfill for disposal

1. Concrete from vehicles, plant and equipment such as the chutes of ready –
mix wagons will be washed with the minimal amount of water into a
designated wash out pit. The water will evaporate leaving concrete which
may be used hardcore or sent to a concrete recycler
2. Concrete from static lines will not be blown back directly onto the land.
Plastic sheeting is to be provided at all static lines
3. Concrete waste from buckets must only be cleaned out in a designated area .
Spills or accidental discharges from buckets are to be cleaned up immediately
Toilets, washrooms and any canteen facilities will discharge into a septic tank and
taken off site at regular intervals to be disposed of at a licensed area.
To prevent accidentally overflowing these tanks a float alarm should be fitted.
