The industrial city of Yanbu enjoys a beautiful natural setting between mountains and the Red Sea. Its 11km coastline features coral reefs famous for marine life. Recreation
It is a rare industrial city that enjoys a natural
setting as beautiful as Yanbu’s. In fact, many suc-
cessful resorts are less well-endowed.
Sandwiched between the rugged Hejaz Moun-
tains and the Red Sea, the site extends along 11
kilometers of waterfront. Much of the coastline
is lined by coral reefs that are world- famous for
the beauty, variety, and abundance of their sea
life.
Local hotels cater for divers who arrive from far
and wide to explore the kaleidoscopic world of
the Yanbu reefs.
Several stretches of community shoreline in the
industrial city are particularly attractive and for
example dense mangrove stands, among the
largest north of theTropic of Cancer, bracket the
coastal residential area. Because they are unique
and support many species of birds and marine
life, these mangroves have been set aside as con-
servation areas.
The rest of the community coastline has been
enhanced by design. In the early days of develop-
ment, millions of cubic meters of soil and seabed
were dredged to create a blue-water band along
the shoreline. At scenic spots, the Royal Commis-
sion has created parks and beaches and outfitted
them with landscaped picnic areas, and other
facilities designed to complement the aesthetic
appeal for its users.
Other areas have been earmarked for special de-
velopment by the private sector.
Several investors have been quick to recognize
Yanbu’s potential for recreation and relaxation.
One, the Bajrai International Group, is proceed-
ing with plans for a waterfront recreational
complex that will include a marina, man-made
lagoon, seafront motel, beach chalets, and other
facilities. Another major investor has built a five-
star coastal hotel to attracting local residents, as
well as visitors from Madinah, Jeddah and other
urban areas.
Other significant opportunities in waterfront
recreation and tourism at Yanbu are described
in the next pages. Developers who exploit them
could be making an excellent investment as
Yanbu bids to become the finest Red Sea resort
north of Jeddah.
Waterfront
Development Projects
Harbor Island Park: The dredging that curved out
much of the community shoreline at Yanbu also
created Harbor Island, whose entire 40 hectares
are being developed as a park site.
Located near the City Center and connected to
the mainland by a bridge, Harbor Island is easily
accessible by car or bicycle. Its beaches, which in-
clude picnic gazebos, and other facilities, are al-
ready the focus of year-round aquatic activities
by community residents and visitors.
Commercial opportunities on the island
include:

• Food and beverage concessions
• Children’s playgrounds
• Bicycle and beach equipment
rentals
• Retail shops.
Recreational Lagoon
A natural lagoon is located along the coastal
northwest of the community. This inlet area,
which occupies some 290 hectares, has also
been served for recreational purposes.
The Royal Commission has drawn up preliminary
plans that call for a wide range of public and pri-
vate facilities. These include:
• A hotel complex, for which
• seven hectares of land have
been set aside.
• Rental and storage facilities for
paddle boats, bicycles, water
cycles and other beach
• equipment.
• A yacht club
• An amusement park
• A marine service station.
