In the play Antigone, Creon s admirable personality, noble stature, and tragic flaw makes him one
of the main tragic characters in this particular play. In the beginning, Sophocles reveals Creon as

Reverend Thomas, Robert Malthus was a political/classical economist born in the late 1760 s. He
studied at several different schools in the areas of mathematics, literature, and arts. Malthus was
married in the early 1800 s and had three children. Malthus is most famous for his theories on
population growth and how he proposed we go about controlling it. He later died in the 1830 s at
the age of 68.
Childhood and Education
Thomas Malthus, more commonly called Robert, was born near Guildford, Surrey, England. His
parents, Daniel and Henrietta, had seven children in total with Malthus being either the sixth or
seventh in the line (different sources claim both as true). Malthus and his siblings received their
preliminary education at home working with private tutors where he excelled primarily in
literature and mathematics despite the fact that he had a speech impediment due to a hair lip and
cleft palate. His tutor, Daniel Malthus, sent him to study with Richard Graves at Claverton for a
short while before sending him to Gilbert Wakefield at the Dissenting Academy of Warrington in
1782. However, in 1783 the Warrington was closed due to funding issues and a decline in

In Literature, as in real life, characters are sometimes judged by their appearance. The description of
clothing provides detail and comment on those wearing them. Chaucer s uses of artifice in The
Canterbury Tales function as gauges of the social status and economic wealth, and emotional
condition of each pilgrim. Artifice effectively provides a badge of humanity, symbolic of each
character s fallibility. Yet clothing simultaneously imposes upon the characters literary stereotypes,
which they consequentially adopt. Unable to transcend these ascribed roles, the pilgrims sometimes
find themselves bound by literary stereotypes and narrative function, which they tend to fulfill ...

Prohibition has made nothing but trouble (Al Capone). The Prohibition Era was significant to the
development of the United States. This was a decade of change and corruption. Prohibition had a
profound impact in the 1920s and on the world today through the effects of alcohol consumption.
Prohibition in the 1920s was remarkably controversial. The 18th Amendment of the U.S.
Constitution, also known as National Prohibition, banned the manufacture, transportation, and
sale of intoxicating liquors ( Prohibition par. 1). The manufacture and distribution of alcoholic
beverages was prohibited; however, the consumption of alcohol was not illegal. Evan Andrews
states that, any wine, beer or spirits Americans had stashed away in January 1920 were theirs to
keep and enjoy in the privacy of their homes (Andrews par. 3). This provision allowed Americans
to own alcohol as long as it was not distributed or traded with anyone. Most people only had a few
bottles; however, wealthy drinkers bought liquor store inventories. Additionally, the Volstead Act,

Rick Deckard In Blade Runner
The final scene moved me more than anything else due to three elements. Firstly, seeing Rick
Deckard genuinely, utterly helpless, perhaps even pathetically desperate for his life, is an
interesting contrast to most other protagonist characterizations. Usually the hero is always in
control, and even if they re temporarily bested, they take control by having a secret plan or
agenda. They certainly never show genuine fear or desperation. Yet here we have Deckard
slipping from the building, helpless to stop his fate. His desperation was a well executed parallel
to the desperation of the villain, Roy Batty. Though Batty seemed to be in control because he held
Deckard s life in his hands, he was just as helpless in the face of his inevitable demise and he knew
