The world is changing fast and there’s even a load of jobs that didn’t exist 10 years ago.
Big data architect, social media manager, zumba instructor
We now have high speed internet on our mobile devices and use apps to book taxis, connect with each other and communicate with each other in new ways.
The changes are happening all the time and recruiting is also changing.
We all realise Social media is here to stay and embracing the tools to harness its power is the key to your success!
One of the most common misconceptions we still see about LinkedIn, is companies continuing to view and use it more as a job board. However, to fully harness the potential of LinkedIn, we need to use LinkedIn as social media recruiting platform.
Lets take a moment to pause and think about the purpose and reason as to why we use social media platforms. Take for instance one I’m sure you are all familiar with, Facebook as an example, the idea is to build a community around you of friends and like-minded people that you then in turn can communicate with and share content that is relevant and engaging to.
LinkedIn is no different. It’s about building a followers ecosystem around you and your business of relevant contacts who are interested in you, your company, and how you might be able to help them transform their career.
In today’s society we are all experts at researching online and have so much more valuable information at our fingertips that studies indicate that 57% of the decision to engage is now made long before any actual contact with you or your business.
The Social web has changed how we all make decisions, including looking for a job. Candidates expect relevant and personalized information delivered to them rather that having to hunt for it.
I like to describe the decision to engage as Social Research, similar to what most of us do when shopping:
Bear with me here - What’s the first thing we all do when shopping online? We review the product (a.k.a. we read the job description) Get an idea of what it is this company is offering..
What’s the next thing we do? Review the seller (in this case the seller is the hiring company) we want to know as much as possible about this company including what's going on with the business, where their focus is, who its employees are, what the culture is like, do I know anyone working there.. We want to be comfortable that this company offering this job is a solid bet in our minds
The final step in this process is to read others reviews (member shared content, company updates, employee testimonials, job recommendations etc..)
And finally after all of this once we truly feel like we understand what’s its like to be part of this organization at the core of it, to walk into work on Monday morning only then do we decide either Yes, I am interested in learning more and will apply to that job or reach out to connect or No, this just is not a fit for me personally at this time.
Embracing social media for recruitment can be daunting.
That’s why LinkedIn has created a framework to allow you to implement some of the tools available today.
There are three pillars the first of which is build, which is about growing your follower base and increasing your talent brand.
The next pillar is engage, which is about being able to share your content to help drive engagement with your company followers.
The final pillar is about Recruiting, which is streamlining your workflow and making it easy for the candidates to apply for your jobs.
Let’s look at the Build pillar now.
As part of the build pillar LinkedIn provides some tools to help you grow your follower base and strengthen your talent brand
LinkedIn provide some technology tools called plugins, that are like social buttons you find on websites.
These plugins help you harness the power of LinkedIn on your website.
One of the plugins, the follower plugin can be placed on your website where people can follow your company simply by clicking on the follower button.
Here’s an example from the Kiva website, which is a non-profit organisation.
By gaining followers for your company you’re growing an engaged audience for your company news.
Your followers are already interested in your company so it makes sense to leverage them to strengthen your talent brand and also as a pool of highly engaged potential candidates.
SGS has reached 100,000 Followers … and how has this helped SGS
Now let’s talk about the most popular activity on Linkedin – members looking at each other’s profiles.
People are curious about the backgrounds of the people they deal with.
In my role I find it really useful to look at the profiles of customers ahead of my meetings with them. It helps me tailor my conversation to make it more crisp and relevant.
Recruiters attract 10 times as many profile views as other people on LinkedIn.
This is a great opportunity for your business and you can leverage your recruiters to help engage with more potential candidates.
Another plugin called the Member profile plugin allows visitors to your website to instantly find out more about company executives or blog authors.
It also gives some context to the user since you can see any common network connections you have.
So you have built a broad network of followers.. Now what? It is crucial once you have these follower that you keep your audience connected and engaged. I am sure most of us in here have been down that road in which we joined a group that sounded really exciting very much in-line with our priorities only to never read or receive anything relevant and ultimately lose interest. That obviously is quite the opposite of what we want. It is important to encourage your followers to want to learn about your company, about your business and your culture all while giving them a personalized and relevant experience. We are going to take a look at a few tools available to help you accomplish that.
2 billion! Does anyone have any idea what that number represents? It’s how many updates are seen weekly across LinkedIn. And this isn’t just people chatting, This is professional content, insights and opportunities to transform people’s lives.
The time to engage your followers is now. Establish your company as a thought leader. Start building your talent community.
Show of hands, how many people out there have shared something on LinkedIn?
One of the best ways to engage your community and keep them engaged is by sharing relevant content. The content could be on your website, blogs or videos. LinkedIn helps make this process easy with our SHARE button, so anyone can share your content with their networks across all of LinkedIn. (let your community help you distribute your news for you)
Valerie: the impact of this and benefits for SGS
Imagine with me for a moment if you will.. I am wondering the endless channels of information online and I come across an interesting article from your company. I click to follow the link back to your corporate website, read the article, glance around and a few other article but don’t find anything relevant and proceed to leave your site. I perhaps spent what maybe 10-15 minutes reading the article but once finished didn’t find anything to capture my attention and so a potential opportunity to further engage me as a prospect for your talent community is now off the table. Now lets image how this should have gone.. I come across the article from your company, navigate to your corporate career page where I am presented an option to log in using my LinkedIn credentials read the article and upon finishing am presented with an option to log in using my LinkedIn credential with the promise of relevant tailored content. Pretty cool right! Now after I finish this
Sharing content is important, sharing tailored content is imperative! In addition to the wonderful Share button we offer you can also utilize our Sign In With LinkedIn to ensure everyone visiting your site gets their own personalized experience. Speak to tailoring the candidate experience by using the Sign in with LinkedIn plugin.
Take the Company Page experience beyond LinkedIn and serve your audience with tailored content. We all like feeling especial and we like it when the things that we see are relevant.
LinkedIn provides you the tools to know who the person visiting your site is. Is it a student or a CEO? David Beckham or Elon Musk (yes, they are both in LinkedIn)
It all starts with what we call the Sign in with LinkedIn plugin. The plugin allows us to know who the person is. You can use it to retrieve some basic information about who the visitor is and provide a relevant experience.
Now, let’s focus for a bit on Jobs. Jobs is a key component on our vision of the Economic Graph. They help us connect people to opportunities. The second component that we will look as part of a personal experience is a little module we call JYMBII (Jobs you might be interested in). It is a very powerful module that showcases relevant jobs to potential candidates. JYMBII also comes in plugin form and can be easily integrated to your site.
There you have it a full personal experience thanks to the magic of LinkedIn
Finally, let’s move to the area that you know extremely well. Recruiting. Through this journey we have seen tools to build your company’s brand and your followers base. Engage them and provide them a personal experience. Let’s now look at how we can help you in your recruiting process.
Let’s now take a look at jobs for a bit and think about the job application process from a candidates perspective. Candidates want to apply for jobs in a quick and easy way, with minimal of clicks, forms and screens to fill out. LinkedIn can help ease the candidate experience by allowing them to use their LinkedIn profile information to apply for a job in a way that avoids tedious data entry.
Since most of the data to apply for a job already exists on a candidate’s LinkedIn profile, this information can be used by the candidate to reduce the effort taken to apply for a job. This leads to more applications completed and a greater pool of job applicants.
You can use LinkedIn’s Profile API tool to enable this feature.
Valerie …. SGSs experience of using this feature
Now lets look at the recruiter experience.
Suppose I was searching for candidates in my ATS and I found a list of them that I wanted to review. Often the candidate data is out of date and can be a waste of time.
Here for example I see a potential candidate called jeff weiner. With cross system awareness I’m able to view his profile within my applicant tracking system. I can see that he’s moved on since I last contacted him and he’s now happy in his role as CEO of LinkedIn.
So you can see how cross system awareness can help me recruit more efficiently.
When your recruiters are working in the LinkedIn Recruiter product you can also see if a profile from a search result is already in your company database. This will inform my decision to contact this person. I can also link back to the candidate record in my ATS.
Valerie, why is it important for you to have this feature.
Value of Taleo integration
We hope you found this presentation informative and useful, but now I want you to start to think about
the things you need to start doing when you return to your offices on Monday
To close, I believe that a successful presentation should address two questions:
