The document presents several metaphors for life using comparisons to rivers, novels, cameras, plays, and journeys. It explains that life can be seen as a river, starting slowly in childhood and gaining energy in youth before slowing down in old age, just as rivers flow quickly from mountains but slow on plains. Life is also compared to a novel, with people as characters and daily experiences as chapters. Additionally, life is said to be like using a camera, where people should focus on important moments and learn from negative experiences. A metaphor is also made that life is a play directed by God, with people as actors on a stage. Finally, the document states that life is a journey with challenges along the path but that people have

AgilePT'10 - Evolving Software: Five powerful metaphors to explain changeFilipe Correia
One of the four values of Agile Software Development is “responding to change”, an area which is particularly fruitful in metaphors. This presentation looks at five metaphors for software evolution, and how they relate to each other: “Learning to Drive”, “Software Decay”, “Technical Debt”, “Code Smell” and “Big Ball of Mud”. We will discuss the role that metaphors play in software development, their benefits and eventual liabilities.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Let us first know , what is METAPHOR ?
Metaphor is a figure of speech which makes an implicit,
implied or hidden comparison between two things or objects
that are poles apart from each other but have some
characteristics common between them. In other words, a
resemblance of two contradictory or different objects is
made based on a single or some common characteristics.
Furthermore, a metaphor develops a comparison which is
different from a simile i.e. we do not use “like” or “as” to
develop a comparison in a metaphor. It actually makes an
implicit or hidden comparison and not an explicit one.
3. Some examples of metaphors:
1.My brother was boiling mad. (This implies he was too angry.)
2.The assignment was a breeze. (This implies that the
assignment was not difficult.)
3.It is going to be clear skies from now on. (This implies that
clear skies are not a threat and life is going to be without
hardships)
4.The skies of his future began to darken. (Darkness is a threat;
therefore, this implies that the coming times are going to be
hard for him.)
5.Her voice is music to his ears. (This implies that her voice
makes him feel happy)
4. 1. LIFE IS A RIVER
The river appears to be a symbol for life .The various instances
which draw parallel between river and life are as follows :
i) Rivers start out slowly and quietly and learn to crawl along in
meandering fashion before they take off down a hill, eventually
building up to a roaring, noisy life pouring down the side of a
mountain.
We start out slowly and learn to crawl before we walk and talk
and then run and yell.
ii)When the river comes out of the mountains its movement is
very noisy , quick and it is in full vigour . It is in a hurry to reach
its destination , that is , the sea . Similarly , man , in his youth ,
is very energetic , lively , enthusiastic and full of vigour .
iii) Then reaching a plateau in their path, rivers slow back down
and move in leisurely fashion again, in some places even
becoming stagnant.
Our lives are like that too. We hit peaks and valleys along the
way.
METAPHORS OF LIFE
5. .
iv)When the river comes closer to the ocean , its movement becomes
slow and smooth , which can be compared to man in his old age ,
who then becomes very calm , gentle , soft and lethargic .
v)During the course of the river’s journey ,it takes a lot of things
along with it like blossom , silt , gravel and fish. In the same way
man even meets , accompanies and moves forward in life with the
people he meets in the journey of his life.
vi)Some rivers achieve fame and move great fortunes, feeding the
world’s great oceans. Others hit dead ends and die out, just like us.
They may just become part of a dirty little man-made lake where
nothing much happens and no one notices . Similarly , some of us
become very famous and some remain inferior as well as infamous.
6. 2.LIFE IS A NOVEL
Our life is a novel where we meet many persons
who appears to be the characters of the novel .We
are the authors of our life . It means that our life
will go on according to our own will. As a novel is
full of suspense and strange things , our life is also
too much unexpected and unpredictable where we
have no idea what is going to happen until we turn
the page. For life, everyday is a new page and each
stage of our life is a new chapter where we are the
protagonist. The only difference between life and a
novel is that , every novel has an end but in life ,
every end is a new beginning.
7.
8. 3.LIFE IS A CAMERA
We should look at what is important in life for us. I
think it is to always live life to the fullest, meaning to
be successful and to have fun at the same time. It is
always best to turn the bad things that happen to us
into something good , as we do with the photos in a
camera by editing and don’t linger on them for a long
time.
Life can be presumed as a camera . We have to
focus on those things which are important for us
and neglect the trivial incidents. Or, we can also say
that if we suppose life to be a camera then we
should capture only the fine moments which are
incomparable. One more thing which we should not
forget is that we should develop from the negatives
and take them as lessons and if things do not work
out, we should take another shot which means , if
it’s going bad for us, then we should start with a
new beginning.
9.
10. 4.LIFE IS A PLAY
The world famous English dramatist William Shakespeare
quoted , “Life is a drama ,God is the director , men are
actors and world is a stage . ” As life is a drama so we can
also say that it is God who assigns us different roles at
different time along with the time of our entrance and exit
.We began with our first role i.e. infancy and end with our
second infancy ,the extreme old age. Sometimes there is
comedy and sometimes it’s turn for tragedy. After living
all the stages of life , when the director (God) desires to
remove any player , the person depart from the world . As
an actor we should give our best performance in life ,
deliver the dialogues properly and act with the co-actors
properly. No compromise should be done with this act (life).
11. We should perform in a pragmatic manner and
always be ready to face any challenge because
anything can happen at any time in life .
The entrance to the stage of life can be compared
to the removal of the curtains from the stage and
when the curtains are brought down then the
performers remain behind it and the audience no
longer get to know what is happening behind the
curtain or what the player is doing . Same is in case
of reality . When any person dies we do not get to
know where he is or what he is doing .
12.
13.
14. 5.LIFE IS A JOURNEY
Life is a journey filled with lessons, hardships, heartaches, joys,
celebrations and special moments that will ultimately lead us to our
destination, our purpose in life. The road will not always be smooth; in
fact, throughout our travels, we will encounter many challenges . Some of
these challenges will test our courage, strengths, weaknesses, and faith.
Along the way, we may stumble upon obstacles that will come between
the paths that we are destined to take. In order to follow the right path, we
must overcome these obstacles.
15. Life is a journey filled with impressions left upon one; some from sights,
some from words. It is these impressions that create the person we are.
Some impress so deeply they become the foundation we build our morals
and ethical standards on. Life is a journey with so many options . A world
to discover , dreams to chase ,goals to reach and people to meet . There
will be times we may not know what we want , who we want , or where we
want to go . In these moments we should always
remember that the best choice is still
standing.
16. Life is a journey not a destination . Everyone takes every
step in a very unique way . This journey may take us down
by great storms and bumpy road but it does not matter ,
what matter the most is how many times we stand-up to
continue . Each moment on journey of life we are presented
with an opportunity to react differently . In this journey
(life) we have the power to change things and not walk
around in a constant circle.
