ABOUT THE SUBJECT
English Plus is a course which aims to improve the English language
proficiency of College Freshmen by learning critical grammatical structures
necessary for communicative functions such as narrating, describing,
giving directions, etc. And to acquire adequate vocabulary needed for
academic study. The learner will master fundamental grammar concepts
and apply this knowledge to written documents, oral speaking skills and in
the End-of-Course assessment.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course, the students would be able to:
1.To acquire adequate vocabulary needed for academic study through
various strategies.
2.To learn the critical grammatical structures necessary for communicative
functions such as narrating, describing, giving directions, etc.
3. To develop the ability to see the grammatical relationships between
words, group of words, and sentences within the discourse level.
4.To develop the ability to use cohesive devices to come up with a
meaningful discourse.
THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS
VOCABULARY
-the words that make up a language
-all the words known and used by a person
-words that are related to a particular subject
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
-Structural analysis is dividing words into parts to discover what an
unknown word means.
Example:
The president aims to decentralize control and supervision over some
matters.

PREFIXES
-word parts which are placed at the beginning of a word to modify or change its
meaning.
Examples:
 dis (negate/remove) + advantage = disadvantage
 en (intensify) + rage = enrage

ROOT WORDS
A root word is a word that forms the basis of new words by adding affixes (prefixes or

-word parts which are added at the end of a word which make a new word
Example:

ABOUT THE SUBJECT English Plus is a course which aims to improve the English language proficiency of College Freshmen by learning critical grammatical structures necessary for communicative functions such as narrating, describing, giving directions, etc. And to acquire adequate vocabulary needed for academic study. The learner will master fundamental grammar concepts and apply this knowledge to written documents, oral speaking skills and in the End-of-Course assessment.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, the students would be able to: 1.To acquire adequate vocabulary needed for academic study through various strategies. 2.To learn the critical grammatical structures necessary for communicative functions such as narrating, describing, giving directions, etc. 3. To develop the ability to see the grammatical relationships between words, group of words, and sentences within the discourse level. 4.To develop the ability to use cohesive devices to come up with a meaningful discourse.

  • 9. VOCABULARY -the words that make up a language -all the words known and used by a person -words that are related to a particular subject
  • 10. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS -Structural analysis is dividing words into parts to discover what an unknown word means. Example: The president aims to decentralize control and supervision over some matters. de- center -al -ize Meaning: distribution of function and powers from a central authority to regional or local authorities
