This document discusses English language education for work and the workplace in Sub-Saharan Africa. It addresses the need to make English language teaching more relevant to the skills required by employers. Several initiatives are highlighted, including redesigning university courses in Ethiopia, improving English training for Angola's oil industry, and revitalizing vocational English courses in Nigeria using literature and films. The British Council is developing a global project called "Skills for Employability" to address this issue, which includes regional symposiums like one held in Johannesburg focusing on defining language needs in different industry sectors.
