The small village of Șirnea in Brasov county, Romania was the country's first tourist village. In the 1960s, the local biology teacher Nicolae Frunteș initiated a project to promote tourism by convincing officials that Romania's natural beauty could attract foreign visitors. He established a museum in the village school, obtaining the necessary permits. This helped Șirnea gain international recognition as a tourist village. Frunteș organized local festivals and activities in the summer and winter to further attract tourists, with the village receiving hundreds of visitors annually from over 20 countries until the 1989 revolution. However, tourism declined in the 1990s as transportation access became more difficult.
