Valle de Bravo is a town in Estado de México located on the shore of Lake Avandaro near Mexico City. The area was originally settled by indigenous groups, and later a hydroelectric plant was constructed in the 1930s-40s that flooded the valley and created the large reservoir. This development led to tourism becoming the main economic activity, as resorts, hotels, and recreational activities sprang up around the new lake. Valle de Bravo remains a popular weekend destination for residents of Mexico City, especially during holidays.
