Meaning
Energy Resources or power
resources refer to the
energy that is used for
turning the wheels of
machines and engines and
also for lighting and heating
Uses of Energy Resources
1) Power is used for turning the wheels of
manufacturing industries.
2)It is used in operating the machines in mining.
3)It is used for transportation. Steam produced from
coal, petroleum, diesel and even electricity are used
as power for running vehicles, trains, aero planes,
ships, etc….
4)Power is used for heating in homes and in
industries.
5)Power is used even for cooking purposes.
RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY
Renewable sources of energy are sources of
energy which can be generated
continuously. They are renewed by natural
process. Examples of renewable sources of
energy are hydro-electric power , solar
energy, wind power, fire wood, tidal energy,
geothermal energy, etc…
SOLAR ENERGY
Solar energy is the power obtained from solar radiation
or rays of the sun. In short, it means power from sun.
Solar energy can be used for cooking, water heating,
water-cooling, water pumping, grain drying, domestic
lighting, air conditioning, refrigeration, etc.. Solar energy
can be collected through a device called collector. Today,
various kind of collectors are developed to collect solar
energy.
SOLAR THERMAL SYSTEMS
PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) CELLS
WIND POWER
Wind power is the power from the force of the
wind. Wind power can be used pumping water
from wells for irrigation, threshing, winnowing
and grinding. It can also be used for generating
power on a small scale. But wind power can not
be an important source of power, as it is
unsteady and uncertain.
Producing Electricity from Wind
TIDAL POWER
Tidal power is the energy generated from the tides. Tidal
waves of the sea can be used to turn turbine and generate
electricity. The tidal energy can be harnessed by
constructing a tidal barrage. During the high tide, the sea
water flows into the reservoir of the barrage, which turns
the turbine to produce electricity.
Geo-Thermal power is the power developed from
the heat generated by the earth. Geo-Thermal
power can be used for various purposes, such as
cooking, heating, etc..
Geo-thermal energy
BIO-GAS OR GOBAR GAS
Bio gas or gobar gas is a methane gas produced by
fermenting cattle dung. It is produced in small plants known
as gobar gas or bio gas plants. Gobar gas can be used for
cooking. It can be used for heating and lighting. It can also be
used for energizing pump sets in rural areas.
NON-RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY
Non- renewable sources refer to those sources of
energy which can not be replenished or renewed by
nature. Examples of non-renewable sources of
energy are coal, petroleum, natural gas, nuclear
energy, etc…
COAL
Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black
sedimentary rock with a high amount of carbon and
hydrocarbons. Coal is classified as a nonrenewable energy
source because it takes millions of years to form. Coal
contains the energy stored by plants that lived hundreds of
millions of years ago in swampy forests.
NUCLEAR ENERGY
It is obtained through fission or fusion
reaction of selected radioactive materials,
which yields large amount of heat energy.
PETROLEUM
Petroleum is a naturally occurring, yellow-to-black
liquid found in geological formations beneath the
Earth's surface, which is commonly refined into
various types of fuels. Components of petroleum are
separated using a technique called fractional
distillation.
