This document outlines a case study of the Eastgate Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, which utilizes a passive ventilation system inspired by termite mounds and cacti. The architect Mick Pearce designed the system to ventilate the building in a cost-effective way using natural airflow. It works by pulling night air into the building through low-power fans and vents, where it is cooled by passing through hollow shafts with "concrete teeth" that act as a thermal store. Warmed air rises and exits through funnels, maintaining a constant cool temperature throughout offices. The design also took biomimicry lessons from termite mounds' stable internal climate and cacti's needle layers for heat loss.
