Parasympathetic And Sympathetic Nervous System Analysis
INTRODUCTION
Within vertebrates, heart rate is established by the sinoatrial (SA) node of the heart. This is
achieved through a series of action potentials which drives excitation of cardiac muscles and
establishes a rhythmic pace (Fritz et al., 2011). However, there are numerous factors that can affect
the SA nodes impact on heart rate, which are primarily related to the autonomic nervous system.
The autonomic nervous system is responsible for the regulation of involuntary functions, and is
broken up into the parasympathetic (PSNS) and sympathetic nervous systems (SNS). The SNS is
most commonly referred to as an organism s fight or flight response, in which its activation is
generally in response to stress, and results in a preparation

Chicago School Of Sociology Essay
The scholars of the Chicago School of Sociology have presented a theory of assimilation that
generally states that people of different cultures and ethnicities that come into the United States
(also applies to other countries as well) will have contact with American culture which will generate
conflict. These people of a different culture or ethnicity will eventually acculturate and integrate
into a so called Melting Pot of culture in which they will give off their own unique flavor but will
eventually blend into mainstream society. I feel that this theory is quite eloquently constructed, but
is rather limiting and not necessarily representative of every ethnic group that assimilated in the
United Statesand should be broadened to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Chicago School of Sociology s theory of assimilation describes the way in which foreign
cultures interact with American culture. From my understanding, the described initial reaction is
unpleasant and conflictual. I generally agree with this statement. It is true that when new cultures
are introduced, people are a bit wary of their practices or appearances. To put it quite simply,
people are uncomfortable with other people that act or look differently than they do. But with time
people adjust and are able to become more comfortable over time as subtle changes are made in
both parties. Since the abolition of slavery in 1865 with the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment
African Americans have been striving to be accepted as part of American culture. A main period of
focus for African Americanassimilation and acculturation is from around 1955 to 1968 and is
better known as the Civil Rights Movement. African American culture had already been defined
very well by the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s. The Civil Rights Movement led to
a better integration of African Americans into society. Most of the progress was made through
nonviolent protests and civil disobedience. There were setbacks to the progress that was often
frowned upon by African Americans that desired progress. I see negroes like him everyday,
breaking into a goddamn buck a wing every time a white man come by. I can t stand to see a Negro
act like that. (Porter pg. 75) These setbacks led to a

Bill Foster s Falling Down
As a society, we often find ourselves entangled up in the midst of what our often clouded minds
perceive to be a chaotic and unforgiving world, but as one can only view the outside world as
they perceive themselves, equally, it can be pondered that the decay of humanity resides within
one s secondary reality (the outside world), to be only a product of the primary reality of which
resides within one s own mind? As what many people commonly perceive as a broken society and
where every fault is placed upon the system and upon one s own neighbors; upon closer inspection,
one truly has to ponder where the root of such brokenness, in reality, truly finds its beginning and
what fuels this intensity of which, only adds to such perceivably chaotic events?... Show more

As Bill Foster purposefully trekked across the mean streets of Los Angeles, and through a series
of seemingly random encounters, Bill s pent up aggression slowly began to bubble to the
surface. Upon first glance, one might naturally assume that Bill was simply the victim of an
isolated nervous breakdown, or has his sanity, much like the world around him, been slowly
unraveling toward a point of no return? Falling down is a brilliant sketch of a relatable character
who examines, contemplates, and protests the many life events of which seem to play out in such
a fashion that, just perhaps, everyone can in some form association with, as it almost appears as
though Bill has found clarity in a world of which he perceives has gone mad; thus, bringing to

Plastic Surgery Becomes More Popular
As time progresses, plastic surgery becomes more popular. Plastic surgery isn t just what s seen on
TV and on social media; plastic surgery is much more than facelifts, rhinoplasty, and breast
enhancements. In fact, plastic surgery is anything that undergoes the process of reconstructing or
repairing parts of the body. (Reconstructive Surgery) The facelift Kris Jenner recently just had done
is equally considered plastic surgeryas an ordinary person getting an extra finger removed. These
are both types of plastic surgery, but they re treated completely differently. A woman who gets
cosmetic surgery gets scorned for getting the procedure done, yet the person who went in to
remove their extra finger does not. In reality, these issues are quite similar. Plastic surgery is
often the last resort for those who want to desperately change how they look; those who get
plastic surgery done are quickly judged for doing so; however, both men and women should
consider the reasons why a person might want plastic surgery; the reasons behind this may be
deeper than one thought. Those who get plastic surgery get it for numerous reasons; one reason
they get it done is for serious medical purposes. Those who seek plastic surgery for medical
purposes are doing it to fix abnormalities caused by accidents, birth defects, and medical issues
developed over time. An example of this would be a driver in a serious car accident getting their
finger ripped off by the force that hit them.

Aaron Burr And Alexander Hamilton
The most famous duel in American history happened between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton.
Ellis relates this with the rules of code duello. Burr and Hamilton shot at each other from ten paces
in Weehawken, NJ. Burr was unharmed while Hamilton was wounded so tragically, he passed the
day after.Hamilton and Burrs conflicts draws attention to how well these Founding brothers
inclined to each other. They worked together on the combat zone, which is true of most of the
illustrations Ellis represents. Since they disputed often, Hamilton contemplated that Burr would
cultivate to dismantle it. One can say that Burr was treacherous in Hamilton s thoughts. Ellis relates

Threat of New Entrants is low since the growth rate is expanding in the athletic apparel market and
existing industry members are actively reaching into product segments or geographic areas where
they do not have a strong presence. There is an entry barriers for new entrants in building a retail
distribution, a large reliable supply chain, and securing contracts for endorsements and promotions.
The other companies are established and credible brands that work on global scales. A smaller
company would most likely not gain enough traction in this already competitive market to stay
relevant even if they selected niche markets since the established companies cater to such a wide
demographic of customers. (David 144).
Other clothing brands have the ability to start manufacturing athletic apparel to take away market
share and diversify their portfolio. Thus, existing apparel companies could enter the performance
apparel market if they decide to invest capital for advertising and building product demand. Under

Embryonic Stem Cells
Stem cells are cells within the body that have the ability to grow and reproduce repeatedly into
any type of mature cell. They are unspecialized cells that divide through mitosis to produce more
stem cells that replace cells in the system in which they are found. Stems cells make it possible
for the body to renew and repair its damaged tissues. They are also vital in the development of

reminded of how much they mean to me. My children have brought out the best in me parts that

Through the love for my son, I developed the ability to remain positive even during the most
difficult times in life. Although I gained the knowledge to be a more stable and positive
individual, something was still missing in my life. The missing piece soon fell into place upon
the birth of my twin boys, Irijah and Isaac. A multiple birth was a miracle within itself. It seemed
unreal because no one in my family was ever blessed with two babies. Although it took a lot of
adjustment, we made it through the baby period. The hard part did not come until they became
toddlers. (During this time), I noticed complications (in the development) (of the twins). I soon
learned that although they were perfect on the outside my boys were suffering with autism.
Irijah is severely autistic while Isaac s is mild. I knew that in order to conquer this obstacle,
changes would have to be made. In the beginning I was unaware of what needed to be done, but
I never gave up. I continue to fight for my boys and struggle to keep my sanity. This has been the
toughest fight of my life because it involves a series of changes. These changes dealt with
acceptance, transition, and adaptation. These were necessary steps because it gives the boys a
chance to lead a somewhat normal life. Through the love of my sons, I have learned to adapt to
change and have gained strength and perseverance that is necessary in life.

It is such a striking feature in the Ptolemaic family that almost every scholar who had written about
Ptolemaic Egypt commented on the incest that took place between its family members (citation
PERIPD). The royal family resisted marriage with commoners or Egyptians with significantly
lower status and over time the Ptolemies began to abstain from exogamy altogether, marrying
within themselves. One of the main reasons of course, is because committing incest is a symbol
of power. There is also a cultural reason to it as well, derived from myths where the Greek
goddess Gaia (Earth) mated with her son Ouranos (Heaven) and brought order and structure out
of chaos. However, incestuous activity is mainly done to assert power and display dominance;
committing the taboo set the Ptolemies apart from ordinary standard rules of human behaviour
(citation PERIPD). There is also the desire to preserve the purity of royal blood and prevent it
from being tainted by commoners and outsiders. Finding a suitable and high status partner is
another reason to participate in inbreeding. With no other high status equivalent, the Ptolemies
turn to their own family members as they are of equal status and high rank and are sired from
the same high class individuals. There is again the cultural influence where in myths, gods marry
each other and because the Ptolemies considered themselves gods, incest was completely
acceptable. Another benefit to incestuous marriage is the control of the spread of genes. The
male has reproductive control over his wife therefore by marrying her he is able to counteract
possible rivals. The relative shares some of the same genes as the king, so by making her his
wife, the king is preventing her from siring offspring with possible rivals and passing on his genes
to outsiders

Language Pedagogy And Teaching Strategies
Language Pedagogy and Teaching Strategies
Recent decades has witnessed the method of language teaching in Second Language Acquisition
(SLA) has a shift from grammar translation toward Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)
(Brandl, 2007). During the 20th century, as increased attention was paid to the demand of
communication skills, grammar translation method which emphasizing knowledge of grammatical
rules and translation activities was no longer effective (Richards Rodgers, 2001). In Australia,
CLT is a preferred approach to be adopted for second language teaching (Fernandez, 2008).
Therefore, the pedagogy of CLT incorporating an array of supportive teaching strategies will be
implemented in my LOTE teaching to ensure that all L2 learners are engaged, challenged and
learning successfully.
Communicative Language Teaching
Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is a method to teach modern languages that focuses on
learning to communicate. In terms of principles of CLT, Kumaravadivelu (2006, p.118) asserts that
language is a system for expressing meaning and the central purpose of language is communication
. It seems that from the perspective of CLT, language is a tool for meaningful communication.
Berardo (2006) claims that the concept of authenticity is essence to CLT including authentic
materials, tasks and language use. It is likely that the success of CLT could be achieved through
implementing authentic materials and meaning focused tasks in language teaching and

Introduction:
Singapore, located in Southeast Asia, has a population of 5.39 million people. It s land area

Singapore serves as a financial and transportation hub and a global commerce. Its economy is

By the end of the 20th century, Singapore has shifted from a setting up a nation state into a

Psychology And Cognitive Science, Confirmation Bias ( Or...
In psychology and cognitive science, confirmation bias (or confirmatory bias) is a tendency to
search for or interpret information in a way that confirms one s preconceptions, leading to statistical
errors. It is a type of cognitive bias and represents an error of inductive inference toward
confirmation of the hypothesis under study.
Confirmation bias is a phenomenon wherein decision makers have been shown to actively seek out
and assign more weight to evidence that confirms their hypothesis, and ignore or underweigh
evidence that could disconfirm their hypothesis.
As such, it can be thought of as a form of selection bias in collecting evidence.
An individual might even seek out proof that further backs up this belief, while discounting
examples that do not support this idea.
Unlike other similar concepts such overconfidence bias or anchoring, confirmation biases impact
how people gather information, but they also influence how people interpret and recall
information. For example, people who support or oppose a particular issue will not only seek
information that supports their beliefs, they will also interpret news stories in a way that upholds
their existing ideas and remember things in a way that also reinforces these attitudes.
Therefore, this concept is important because without seeking for objective facts, interpreting
information in a way that only supports one s existing beliefs, and only remembering details that
uphold these beliefs, people often miss important

Making My Fashion Dreams Become A Reality
Growing up surrounded by historical landmarks, creative arts, and Southern charm, I have always
been an admirer of fashion and beauty. When I was a young child of five years, I would
continually play dress up and dream of becoming a Fashionista that assists movie stars and social
elite for their red carpet appearances. I wanted to contribute to others in seeing the beauty in
themselves and the world around them. After about eighteen years, nothing has really changed
within my mind set. Today, I still dream of working in the fashionindustry, but more importantly,
making a difference in the world. In the process of making my fashion dreams become a reality, at
seventeen, I secured enrollment at Northeast MississippiCommunity College majoring in fashion
merchandising. My first two years at junior college were wonderful, and I thoroughly enjoyed
participating in the arts, being the Captain of the Tiger Dancers and Pom Squad, playing as a
member of the tennis team, and supporting Prentiss county as Miss Hospitality 2013. These years
taught me time management like no other while also leading me down the path of self expression
and competitiveness. Finding immense knowledge and encouragement from professors in little
classrooms and civilians in a small Mississippi town perfected my willingness to strive to do my
utmost best in every circumstance, whether it be reaching my goals or helping others. Attending

William Wordsworth s The Daffodils compared to Gillian Clarke s Miracle on St David s Day
In this essay I will attempt to compare two very contrasting poems,
William Wordsworth s `The Daffodils which was written in pre 1900s and Gillian Clarke s Miracle
on St David s Day , written in the 20th century. Strangely enough Gillian Clarke s Miracle on St
David s day was actually inspired by The Daffodils . In 1804 William Wordsworth wrote a
masterpiece , two years after his experience with the daffodils, while the poem Miracle on St.
David s Day was written by
Gillian Clarke around 1980, one hundred and seventy six years later.

The insanity of all of these inmates in Clarke s is not dangerous, except for the beautiful chestnut
haired boy who is schizophrenic, on a good day and this shows the reader that looks aren t always
everything. They are trapped in their world of absences with no escape. In this poem, it is the
rhythms of poetry that cures the dumb man. However, The Daffodils describes the power of the
actual flower to cure Wordsworth s ...vacant or pensive mood... The significance of the actual
flower differs in the two poems. Wordsworth bases his whole poem on them, whereas Clarke
bases her poem on Wordsworth s poem Wordsworth is Clarke s inspiration and this is evident in
her poem, as her opening line is a quote from Wordsworth s poem.
The poems connect in that they are both describing an event where a memory lifts the characters
spirits and in a way, cures them. Also contrasting with Miracle on St. David s Day there is a sense
of freedom in Daffodils . The easy atmosphere, pleasant surroundings of nature and the movement
of the flowers give this effect. Movement suggests freedom and in many cultures it is symbolised
in native dances. The poet s use of participles such as dancing and
fluttering suggests constant movement, and that the

Great Chicago Fire Essay
Great Chicago Fire
I have no passion or desire to write about a thunderous destruction of a city or the death of
hundreds of people. Yes, I have no connection to this topic, besides my home being 30 minutes
from downtown Chicago, but that does not mean that this fire does not pertain to me or anyone
who lives in a completely different state for that matter. So, just because I have never experienced a
disaster of this magnitude does not mean that my lips should stay shut regarding the topic of the
Great Chicago Fire. What must be done is to look at events and, for that matter, life in a certain
perspective that is not always one sided. This one sidedness can come from focusing on a particular
outcome without realizing what else ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From there, a piece of debris was flown onto an oil tanker located across the river in the North Side.
The North Side was ablaze. It was a terrible night for many of the residents of the city of Chicago
and is one that will go down in infamy until the end of time. The final totals for the fire were at the
minimum 300 deaths, 70,000 buildings burned to the ground, 100 thousand people forced to
homelessness, 73 miles of street were incinerated, and 200 million dollars in damage.
There are many examples of struggle and despair during the fire, but there is one that I found
very compelling. This excerpt from a letter written by a businessman from Chicago in 1871
brought into account the amount of people who came back and tried to save their precious
belongings instead of focusing on getting out of town. The man in this example was able to sneak
away with his life but faced some very close to death moments.

Essay about A Tale of Two Cities
During my active duty military service I had the opportunity to live in and visit many different
cities. Of all the cities I lived in, I spent most of my military time in Charleston, S.C. and
Jacksonville, FL. Charleston and Jacksonville were similar in size, geography and population
types, but differed greatly in history, weather, and the overall attitudes of its residents. If I had to
choose between the two cities as the place to call my home, it would be without a doubt,

portion of their populations consisting of military families. Although Jacksonville was larger in

A few of the many historical sites of Charleston were Rainbow Row, The Market, Fort Sumter

Jacksonville was known more as a modern city that began to grow and blossom after the Civil
War. It was considered a victim of war due to the dilapidation it suffered during the Civil War.
The climates of Charleston and Jacksonville were generally considered to be similar, hot and
very muggy. My experience was that there was still a large difference and I had come to feel as
though each city s climate resembled the attitudes of its residents, or maybe it was just the
opposite. Residents of Charleston were laid back and unrushed while the residents of
Jacksonville were impatient and hurried. I remember the deep blue skies over Charleston harbor
were often filled with white puffs of clouds that resembled perfectly shaped cotton balls. I could
always count on the light and pleasant ocean breeze that made it difficult to focus on my work,
and if rain came, it drifted in as slowly and silently as the sailboats returning to the marina after a
long day out on the harbor. In Jacksonville, I remember the ocean breeze was more of a confused

Making Better Decisions on Environmental Issues
Intro to GIS and environmental management
GIS (Geographic Information System) is a new geographical research technology since the 1960s,
which is a powerful software that allows a virtually unlimited amount of information to be linked to
a geographic location. The more and more extensive environmental causes, abundant data resources
from scientific researches, as well as the continuous improvement of the computer and GIS
technology, all call for wider and deeper application of GIS in the environment field, such as the
environmental management, environmental impact assessment, pollution monitoring, environmental
graphics, etc. In ArcGIS, one well known product of ESRI, various analytical tools are used to help
people make better decisions on environmental issues.
GIS is an interdisciplinary technology, integrated by computer science, geography, surveying,
cartography and stuff. Generally, GIS includes computer hardware and software systems and
processes that are used to solve complex planning and management problems, supports spatial data
collection, management, operation, analysis and simulation. Main functions of GIS include the
input, storage, processing and output of geographic data collected from map vectorization, remote
sensing data, GPS, etc. GIS s characteristics are: strong system of spatial data management; vivid
and intuitive user interface; powerful spatial analysis capability.

Robert Wilson s Influence On Theatre
Introduction
The art form of theatre can be traced far back several centuries, with its origin not properly
identified. We can find many different styles of it in civilizations from the Ancient Greeks, Ancient
Romans, Ancient Chinese and more. It has developed through many styles in order to become what
we see on stage today. As new technologies began to emerge in the late 20th century, lights, sound
and visualization became increasingly important to theatre. More theatre creators began seeing
them as not additional accessories, but a whole concept just as important as dialogue and
movement. The use of technology has become such a value in theatre that companies such as the

Men would get married around the age of twenty five to thirty. They were very important in
ancient Greece society. In the families the men s role was very important. The man was in

Children had different roles depending on the gender weather it was a boy or a girl. Most girls

Story Of An Hour Essay
Feminism is an organized activity on behalf of women s rights and interests. Feminism has been
in society for many years. The story Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin and the poem Paper
Matches by Paulette Jiles are based on how feminism affected women before. These two passages
have a similar perspective on how women saw men, both are written in the perspective of a woman,
and how women were confined to their homes.
First, both stories are similar in how women saw men. In Story of an Hour Mr. Mallard was
working while Mrs.Mallard was at the house. For example, Brently Mallard who entered, a little
travel stained, composedly carrying his grip sack and umbrella. (lines 86 87). When the people
told Mrs. Mallard her husband was dead she starts describing her house as if something was

character Mrs. Mallard describes her emotions as she did not know what to do know with the
freedom she just got. In Paper Matches Jiles purpose was to show how even little kids like the
girl in the story felt trapped. For example, when the little girl asks, Why are we in here, I said, and

impacted all females, little girls, and grown women. Both author s express how women felt at the

The Application Of Operant Learning

Professor Shaun Vecera Section 18
Elementary Psychology
05 October 2014
The Application of Operant Learning Operant conditioning and classical conditioning are two
completely different forms of learning. Classical conditioning, discovered by Ivan Pavlov, is
associated with learning through the process in which one reacts to a neutral stimulus. This process
involves matching a neutral stimulus to a stimulus (UCS) that produces an unconditioned response
(UCR), or a reflex, for a long period of time. Over time, the UCS would be removed and the person
being manipulated would start reacting to the previously neutral stimulus, thus becoming a
conditioned, or learned, stimulus (CS) that elicits a conditioned response (CR). Operant conditioning
, on the other hand, is a form of learning where one s behavior is manipulated by the outcome. The
consequences would take a toll on one s behavior and would either increase through reinforcement
or decrease by punishment the likelihood of the behavior happening again. Both reinforcement and
punishment are split into two types: positive and negative. Positive reinforcement and positive
punishment involves controlling one s behavior, whatever the case may be, by presenting a certain
stimulus. Negative reinforcement and negative punishment eradicate a stimulus to increase or
decrease behavior. The differences seen between operant conditioning and classical conditioning are
apparent. In classical conditioning, the

I believe that kindness is a standout amongst the most vital human qualities. I think it is really
nice to do a random act of kindness sometimes, and it can truly change the standpoint of another
person s day. Once I got this assignment about the random act of kindness I was really glad to take
part in a great deal of kind heartedness. It s always good to make yourself a blessing to someone
else. For my random act of kindness, I distributed ice cold bottles of water to men at the race
track who were working on cars in 90 degree weather. I decided this would be the best one for me
to do since I knew it would be hot and the men needed to stay hydrated. My random act of
kindness took place on Sunday September 4, 2016 in Lena, Ms. I bought three

Portrayal Of Women In Lanval
The Role of Women in Lanval The role of women in Lanval is portrayed as powerful characters
who demonstrate dominance over men. In the story, women takes an important role of being a
hero that possesses magical capabilities and a villian who is capable of manipulating men s
decision. The maiden, whose name was never revealed, cured Lanval of his loneliness. She
showed generosity, gifting him with riches that he never gotten from serving King Arthur. Her
bravery was apparent when she confronted the King and Queen and saved Lanval from false
accusations. Her beauty alone was power. She possessed features that surpassed any men in the
story, with the exception of Lanval s valore and courtly, which she fell in love with. Breaking free

In the text, we can see that both the maiden and the Queen used seduction to control the behavior
of men. The text described the maiden as a beauty with features of a goddess with her white skin
and purity. And with such seductiveness, she was able to obtain Lanval s heart, who was
obedient and faithful to her love. If it please you, and this great joy should befall me, that you
grant your love, I ll be at your beck and call, to fulfill whatever needs you have, wise or foolish
you are above me, my only commandant. All others for you I abandon. From you I never want to
part: That hope is strongest in my heart. This quote is significant because Lanval has only met the
maiden for first time, but he was willing to give up everything for her. It is important to take
notice of the word commandant, which clearly empathize the power that women has over men.
Similarly, Queen Guinevere took control with her words. By expressing words of sorrow, she was
able to put herself in the position of King Arthur to punish Lanval for his

The Fight For Clean Drinking Water
Drinking a glass of water does not usually stir up thoughts of injustice. If it in someway did, it
would probably be over concern for those in underdeveloped countries who struggle to get clean
drinking water. Yet, the struggle to attain clean drinking water occurs in the United States as well
and especially for minorities. Regulations in the Federal Safe Drinking Act often go unmet and the
purpose of the Safe Water Drinking Act unfulfilled as minority dominant and poor communities
often have the most severe and pervasive health violations of their drinking water. Unfortunately,
this occurs right here in the San Joaquin Valley. The Valley demonstrates environmental injustice in
the types of communities that experience nitrate... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2007, 75% of nitrate violations in water in California happened in the San Joaquin Valley and
the source of the increased nitrates in groundwater is most certainly from the large agribusiness
in the valley. The United States Geological Survey concluded the agriculture was the main
source of nitrate pollution in both ground and surface water as there is at least 6.6 million acres
of irrigated crop land in the Valley and each acre creates about 80 pounds of nitrogen every year.
Nitrogen is commonly found in pesticides and fertilizer and it seeps into the ground as nitrates.
Animal waster is another byproduct of farms and about 1 to 2.5% of manure created by the
Valley s 1.6 million dairy cows is nitrogen. Overall, fertilizers and animal waste applied to crops
create 96% of nitrate contamination of drinking water in California. While agriculture and
resulting ground water problems is far from unusual, the water situation in the San Joaquin Valley
is rather ironic. Ninety percent of residents in the Valley rely on groundwater for drinking water.
Farmers receive state and federal water subsidies for irrigation purposes that is not highly
contaminated with nitrates. Farmers receive water both from California s Bay Delta and from
more local runoff from the Sierra Nevada. They receive this water at about $70 per

The most obvious advantage of video marketing is that it s so highly engaging. The human brain
has evolved in order to pay attention to moving images and sounds and this is why we are
naturally inclined to stop and watch the television when it s on in the background. Have you ever
been talking to someone when there s a television in the room only to notice that they re actually
looking straight past you and at the screen? The sound could be off and it could even be playing
adverts but still some people will be almost unable to turn away. This isn t anything personal
(usually), it s just a perfect example of how moving images hold our attention.
Another great example is a classroom. Do you remember when the teacher would say they were
going to put on a video for a particular lesson? Even the noisiest of classes would fall silent and
become very well behaved at this point even when the topic of the video wasn t anything
particularly interesting. Video has an almost hypnotic quality and this is an excellent trait for any

Paul Revere s Ride Summary
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow s, Paul Revere s Ride, is based off of the historical events that
took place in the late 1800s during the American Revolution against the British. Henry wrote this
poem to recall the brave and courageous journey made by the real Paul Revere. While his
rendition of the story wasn t completely accurate, due to the fact that Paul was not the only
midnight rider, it still served as a great example of what a true American hero looks like. The
author once stated, Lives of great men all remind us, we can make our lives sublime, and,
departing, leave behind us, footprints on the sands of time. Henry uses this story to bring the
audience on the journey of Paul Revere. More importantly he uses the story to describe the... Show

Paul discovers the two lanterns that have been lit and rides through a town to warn its people.
Henry writes that the fate of a nation was riding that night , in other words to say that the fate of
the colonies lie in Paul Revere s hands. Perhaps to say if Paul had not delivered the message of
the British arrival, then many of America s people would have not made it or been prepared to
fight back. The author gives the audience a time frame of which these events occurred. He states,
It was one by the village clock, when he galloped into Lexington. And later says, It was two by
the village clock, when he came to the bridge in Concord town. A sense of repetition can be seen
here by the wording and the time elements being in numerical order. The poem concludes to say
that we all know the story and how it

Literature Of Dalit Literature
Study of Dalit Literature of subalternity through an upsurge of new social class and consciousness
among the Depressed section
Dr. Pravat Ranjan Sethi pravatjnu@gmail.com Unlike a drop of water which loses its identity
when it joins the ocean, man does not lose his being in the society in which he lives. Man s life is
independent. He is born not for the development of the society alone, but for the development of his
self. B.R. Ambedkar
Abstract
Dalit is a category of self definition of Untouchables in post Independence India. It signifies a state
of radical consciousness and seeks to interrogate and challenge the previous stereotypes that caste
Hindu society had employed to describe untouchable as well as near untouchable castes and
communities. However, in the contemporary context, the term dalit does not remain simply a
descriptive category. The term dalit may be termed as a category of resistance which presupposes
critical possibilities and potential of interpreting methodologies of dominance and resistance. Dalit
literature emerged as the radical literature and challenged the norms, standards and principles of the
so called mainstream brahminical literature, aesthetics and literary theory. Dalit literature is not the
literature of mere protest or negation. It aims at dismantling the existing structures of exploitation
and restructuring the global society. Marginal representation of the lower caste writers and their life
experiences result in the

How Did The Liberal Government Act Of Social Reform...
The Introduction of Social Reforms by the Liberal Government in 1906 1914
There are multiple reasons why the Liberal government introduced acts of social reform between
1906 and 1914. The obvious reason is that there was a great need for reform(change) but there
are also many other factors that played a part in the decision for a reform. This change was really
required to help and improve Britain. The reason for this need for change was the poor conditions
that all parts of Britain had been left in after the conservatives had been in power.
It is often said that the Liberals had to introduce in social reforms due to pressure from the Labour
party. This new party was formed in 1903... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of this there were committees set up to evaluate and analyze this to show that the
physical condition males was very poor, as this was the group of people who would be defending
Britain for years to come something needed to be done. If Britain would always struggle to defeat.
The other factor that made the need seem realistically more desperate was from surveys carried
out indifferent places by two very different men Seebohm Rowntree and Charles Booth. The
carried surveys out on all classes but were very concerned about the poor. After many years of
analyzing and evaluating they calculated that a family of fives minimum necessary income per
week for a family to exist at mere physical efficiency was 21s 8d. this minimum amount was called
the poverty line. Over a third of the population of Britain were earning under this poverty line
whilst another third were just meeting it. Nearly all of the unemployment was caused by ill health
or just lack of work available. If the man lost his job the whole family would struggle to survive.
This is when sometimes the children were sent out to work. The liberals needed to change this and
New Liberalism was the way.

Essay about A Biography of Josephine Baker
A Biography of Josephine Baker
Josephine Baker was born Freda Josephine MacDonald in St. Louis, Missouri to her unwed
parents: Carrie McDonald and Eddie Carson. Her father soon left the family and Josephine had
to help her mother support herself and her three younger half siblings. At age eight, she got a job
working as a maid for a white family (Robinson). At age 12, she had dropped out of school to
work. By age 14, she had moved out, been married, and separated from her first husband. She
would later go onto marry and divorce three more men. Never was she financially dependent on any
man, including her husbands.
Her stage career began in 1919 in the United States when she toured with The Jones Family Band

In 1936, Josephine attempted a return to the United States to star in the Ziegfield Follies. Due to
the still prevalent racism in the United States, she was greeted with negative reviews. Americans
were not yet ready to embrace a black woman as sophisticated and powerful, despite her success in
Europe (About).
Just a few years later, World War II spread across Europe. Josephine helped out France in every
way she could: performing for troops, being an honorable correspondent for the French Resistance
(smuggling secret messages), and serving as a sub lieutenant in the Women s Auxiliary Air Force
(About). For her efforts, she was later awarded the Medal of the Resistance with Rosette and
dubbed a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government.
In the 50s and 60s, Josephine returned to the United States to help fight racism. She refused to
perform in any club or theatre that was not integrated (Lewis). This resulted in the breaking of the
color bar in many establishments, especially in Las Vegas. May 20 was named Josephine Bakerday
by the NAACP for her efforts. Part of her fight against racism came in the form of the Rainbow
Tribe. She adopted 12 children to demonstrate that children of different ethnicities and religions
could still be brothers (About). The children would sometimes

Felons And The Voting Rights Act
Felons are people who have been convicted of a felony. Felony is a crime, typically one involving
violence, regarded as more serious than a misdemeanor, and usually punishable by imprisonment
for more than one year or by death. In Maine and Vermont, felons never lose their right to vote,
even while they are incarcerated. Vermont s 1793 Constitution stipulates that residents can lose
their right to vote only if convicted of voter fraud. In Florida, Lowa and Virginia, felons and ex
felons permanently lose their right to vote. Eleven states restrict voting even after a person has
completed their prison sentence and finished probation or parole. Twenty states require completion
of parole and probation before voting is allowed, and fourteen states allow felons to vote after they
leave prison. Florida and Texas each disenfranchise more than 600,000 people. In 1789, Kentucky
became the first U.S. stateto ban convicted criminals from voting. U.S. Supreme Court Justice
Sonia Sotomayor said that felon disenfranchisement is a violation of the Voting Rights Act in her
May 4, 2006 dissenting opinion in Hayden v. Pataki. Ex felons should be able to vote because
they served their time and now they are out. Hayden v. Pataki is a legal challenge to New York
State s law disenfranchising individuals convicted of felonies while in prison and on parole. The
initial pro se complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York,

he jungle gave way to the lithe figure, running and jumping through the alien thicket, dodging
and turning in her way to the familiar site. Even at such speed, probably with more reason, her
eyes were watchful, alert. The low plants with the wide leaves and blue spots were harmless and
edible, a brush with the tall red sprigs of the reeds in humid areas caused a fever. In the daylight
such things were easy to distinguish even in a hurry, but it also meant that she had to be careful
with the predators like the one chasing her. The girl reached the clearing, sighing of relief, but
she was far from safe. Leaving the bushes and trees behind meant that the creature wouldn t be
able to hide, its camouflage rendered useless, but it would also have freedom to move. The birds
stopped their chirping, and just the buzzing of mosquitoes in the nearby pond broke the silence,
not even her breath could be heard. The predator, a long lizard like being covered in
kaleidoscopic feathers stumbled out of the vegetation, its six legs moving in unison, its size almost
equal to an Earthly horse. Its short tail, able to snap a small tree whipped the earth. The jaw, who

  • 2. Parasympathetic And Sympathetic Nervous System Analysis INTRODUCTION Within vertebrates, heart rate is established by the sinoatrial (SA) node of the heart. This is achieved through a series of action potentials which drives excitation of cardiac muscles and establishes a rhythmic pace (Fritz et al., 2011). However, there are numerous factors that can affect the SA nodes impact on heart rate, which are primarily related to the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is responsible for the regulation of involuntary functions, and is broken up into the parasympathetic (PSNS) and sympathetic nervous systems (SNS). The SNS is most commonly referred to as an organism s fight or flight response, in which its activation is generally in response to stress, and results in a preparation ... • 3. Chicago School Of Sociology Essay The scholars of the Chicago School of Sociology have presented a theory of assimilation that generally states that people of different cultures and ethnicities that come into the United States (also applies to other countries as well) will have contact with American culture which will generate conflict. These people of a different culture or ethnicity will eventually acculturate and integrate into a so called Melting Pot of culture in which they will give off their own unique flavor but will eventually blend into mainstream society. I feel that this theory is quite eloquently constructed, but is rather limiting and not necessarily representative of every ethnic group that assimilated in the United Statesand should be broadened to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Chicago School of Sociology s theory of assimilation describes the way in which foreign cultures interact with American culture. From my understanding, the described initial reaction is unpleasant and conflictual. I generally agree with this statement. It is true that when new cultures are introduced, people are a bit wary of their practices or appearances. To put it quite simply, people are uncomfortable with other people that act or look differently than they do. But with time people adjust and are able to become more comfortable over time as subtle changes are made in both parties. Since the abolition of slavery in 1865 with the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment African Americans have been striving to be accepted as part of American culture. A main period of focus for African Americanassimilation and acculturation is from around 1955 to 1968 and is better known as the Civil Rights Movement. African American culture had already been defined very well by the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s. The Civil Rights Movement led to a better integration of African Americans into society. Most of the progress was made through nonviolent protests and civil disobedience. There were setbacks to the progress that was often frowned upon by African Americans that desired progress. I see negroes like him everyday, breaking into a goddamn buck a wing every time a white man come by. I can t stand to see a Negro act like that. (Porter pg. 75) These setbacks led to a ... • 4. Bill Foster s Falling Down As a society, we often find ourselves entangled up in the midst of what our often clouded minds perceive to be a chaotic and unforgiving world, but as one can only view the outside world as they perceive themselves, equally, it can be pondered that the decay of humanity resides within one s secondary reality (the outside world), to be only a product of the primary reality of which resides within one s own mind? As what many people commonly perceive as a broken society and where every fault is placed upon the system and upon one s own neighbors; upon closer inspection, one truly has to ponder where the root of such brokenness, in reality, truly finds its beginning and what fuels this intensity of which, only adds to such perceivably chaotic events?... As Bill Foster purposefully trekked across the mean streets of Los Angeles, and through a series of seemingly random encounters, Bill s pent up aggression slowly began to bubble to the surface. Upon first glance, one might naturally assume that Bill was simply the victim of an isolated nervous breakdown, or has his sanity, much like the world around him, been slowly unraveling toward a point of no return? Falling down is a brilliant sketch of a relatable character who examines, contemplates, and protests the many life events of which seem to play out in such a fashion that, just perhaps, everyone can in some form association with, as it almost appears as though Bill has found clarity in a world of which he perceives has gone mad; thus, bringing to light the most trivial of things that for most, if not all of us, has the propensity to set us off onto a similar digression from time to ... • 5. Plastic Surgery Becomes More Popular As time progresses, plastic surgery becomes more popular. Plastic surgery isn t just what s seen on TV and on social media; plastic surgery is much more than facelifts, rhinoplasty, and breast enhancements. In fact, plastic surgery is anything that undergoes the process of reconstructing or repairing parts of the body. (Reconstructive Surgery) The facelift Kris Jenner recently just had done is equally considered plastic surgeryas an ordinary person getting an extra finger removed. These are both types of plastic surgery, but they re treated completely differently. A woman who gets cosmetic surgery gets scorned for getting the procedure done, yet the person who went in to remove their extra finger does not. In reality, these issues are quite similar. Plastic surgery is often the last resort for those who want to desperately change how they look; those who get plastic surgery done are quickly judged for doing so; however, both men and women should consider the reasons why a person might want plastic surgery; the reasons behind this may be deeper than one thought. Those who get plastic surgery get it for numerous reasons; one reason they get it done is for serious medical purposes. Those who seek plastic surgery for medical purposes are doing it to fix abnormalities caused by accidents, birth defects, and medical issues developed over time. An example of this would be a driver in a serious car accident getting their finger ripped off by the force that hit them. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Impact Of Marketing On The Athletic Apparel Market ted product. Threat of New Entrants is low since the growth rate is expanding in the athletic apparel market and existing industry members are actively reaching into product segments or geographic areas where they do not have a strong presence. There is an entry barriers for new entrants in building a retail distribution, a large reliable supply chain, and securing contracts for endorsements and promotions. The other companies are established and credible brands that work on global scales. A smaller company would most likely not gain enough traction in this already competitive market to stay relevant even if they selected niche markets since the established companies cater to such a wide demographic of customers. (David 144). Other clothing brands have the ability to start manufacturing athletic apparel to take away market share and diversify their portfolio. Thus, existing apparel companies could enter the performance apparel market if they decide to invest capital for advertising and building product demand. I can say I have been fortunate to have four little blessings of my own. I consider each of them as a blessing and each day I am reminded of how much they mean to me. My children have brought out the best in me parts that I never knew existed. As children grow, so do parents. I have evolved into a better person with the courage to overcome all obstacles because of the love that I have for my children. Although I gained the knowledge to be a more stable and positive individual, something was still missing in my life. It seemed unreal because no one in my family was ever blessed with two babies. Although it took a lot of adjustment, we made it through the baby period. The hard part did not come until they became toddlers. (During this time), I noticed complications (in the development) (of the twins). I soon learned that although they were perfect on the outside my boys were suffering with autism. Irijah is severely autistic while Isaac s is mild. I knew that in order to conquer this obstacle, changes would have to be made. In the beginning I was unaware of what needed to be done, but I never gave up. I continue to fight for my boys and struggle to keep my sanity. This has been the toughest fight of my life because it involves a series of changes. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is such a striking feature in the Ptolemaic family that almost every scholar who had written about Ptolemaic Egypt commented on the incest that took place between its family members (citation PERIPD). The royal family resisted marriage with commoners or Egyptians with significantly lower status and over time the Ptolemies began to abstain from exogamy altogether, marrying within themselves. One of the main reasons of course, is because committing incest is a symbol of power. There is also a cultural reason to it as well, derived from myths where the Greek goddess Gaia (Earth) mated with her son Ouranos (Heaven) and brought order and structure out of chaos. However, incestuous activity is mainly done to assert power and display dominance; committing the taboo set the Ptolemies apart from ordinary standard rules of human behaviour (citation PERIPD). There is also the desire to preserve the purity of royal blood and prevent it from being tainted by commoners and outsiders. Finding a suitable and high status partner is another reason to participate in inbreeding. With no other high status equivalent, the Ptolemies turn to their own family members as they are of equal status and high rank and are sired from the same high class individuals. There is again the cultural influence where in myths, gods marry each other and because the Ptolemies considered themselves gods, incest was completely acceptable. Another benefit to incestuous marriage is the control of the spread of genes. The male has reproductive control over his wife therefore by marrying her he is able to counteract possible rivals. The relative shares some of the same genes as the king, so by making her his wife, the king is preventing her from siring offspring with possible rivals and passing on his genes to outsiders ... Language Pedagogy And Teaching Strategies Language Pedagogy and Teaching Strategies Recent decades has witnessed the method of language teaching in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) has a shift from grammar translation toward Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) (Brandl, 2007). During the 20th century, as increased attention was paid to the demand of communication skills, grammar translation method which emphasizing knowledge of grammatical rules and translation activities was no longer effective (Richards Rodgers, 2001). In Australia, CLT is a preferred approach to be adopted for second language teaching (Fernandez, 2008). Communicative Language Teaching Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is a method to teach modern languages that focuses on learning to communicate. In terms of principles of CLT, Kumaravadivelu (2006, p.118) asserts that language is a system for expressing meaning and the central purpose of language is communication . It seems that from the perspective of CLT, language is a tool for meaningful communication. By the end of the 20th century, Singapore has shifted from a setting up a nation state into a developed and global city. The city built a competitive economythrough the influx of migration (Armaldas, 2009). In fact, Singapore was ranked, right after London and New York, as the third most competitive city in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit s Global City Competitive Index. The qualification was based on 8 different categories that shaped a competitive city; from the 8, Singapore ranked number one in financial maturity and physical capital (Yew, 2014). Due to the continuing competitiveness between Singapore and the neighboring cities and countries, including China and India, the Singaporean government has been working and reconstructing their economic foundation to hold on to its title East Asia s primary hub (Armaldas, 2009). • 26. Psychology And Cognitive Science, Confirmation Bias ( Or... In psychology and cognitive science, confirmation bias (or confirmatory bias) is a tendency to search for or interpret information in a way that confirms one s preconceptions, leading to statistical errors. It is a type of cognitive bias and represents an error of inductive inference toward confirmation of the hypothesis under study. Confirmation bias is a phenomenon wherein decision makers have been shown to actively seek out and assign more weight to evidence that confirms their hypothesis, and ignore or underweigh evidence that could disconfirm their hypothesis. As such, it can be thought of as a form of selection bias in collecting evidence. An individual might even seek out proof that further backs up this belief, while discounting examples that do not support this idea. Unlike other similar concepts such overconfidence bias or anchoring, confirmation biases impact how people gather information, but they also influence how people interpret and recall information. For example, people who support or oppose a particular issue will not only seek information that supports their beliefs, they will also interpret news stories in a way that upholds their existing ideas and remember things in a way that also reinforces these attitudes. Therefore, this concept is important because without seeking for objective facts, interpreting information in a way that only supports one s existing beliefs, and only remembering details that uphold these beliefs, people often miss important ... In Paper Matches Jiles purpose was to show how even little kids like the girl in the story felt trapped. For example, when the little girl asks, Why are we in here, I said, and they are out there? • 42. The Application Of Operant Learning Jane Tien Thuy Nguyen Professor Shaun Vecera Section 18 Elementary Psychology 05 October 2014 The Application of Operant Learning Operant conditioning and classical conditioning are two completely different forms of learning. Classical conditioning, discovered by Ivan Pavlov, is associated with learning through the process in which one reacts to a neutral stimulus. This process involves matching a neutral stimulus to a stimulus (UCS) that produces an unconditioned response (UCR), or a reflex, for a long period of time. Over time, the UCS would be removed and the person being manipulated would start reacting to the previously neutral stimulus, thus becoming a conditioned, or learned, stimulus (CS) that elicits a conditioned response (CR). Operant conditioning , on the other hand, is a form of learning where one s behavior is manipulated by the outcome. The consequences would take a toll on one s behavior and would either increase through reinforcement or decrease by punishment the likelihood of the behavior happening again. Both reinforcement and punishment are split into two types: positive and negative. Positive reinforcement and positive punishment involves controlling one s behavior, whatever the case may be, by presenting a certain stimulus. Negative reinforcement and negative punishment eradicate a stimulus to increase or decrease behavior. The differences seen between operant conditioning and classical conditioning are apparent. In classical conditioning, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If it in someway did, it would probably be over concern for those in underdeveloped countries who struggle to get clean drinking water. Yet, the struggle to attain clean drinking water occurs in the United States as well and especially for minorities. Regulations in the Federal Safe Drinking Act often go unmet and the purpose of the Safe Water Drinking Act unfulfilled as minority dominant and poor communities often have the most severe and pervasive health violations of their drinking water. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 2007, 75% of nitrate violations in water in California happened in the San Joaquin Valley and the source of the increased nitrates in groundwater is most certainly from the large agribusiness in the valley. The United States Geological Survey concluded the agriculture was the main source of nitrate pollution in both ground and surface water as there is at least 6.6 million acres of irrigated crop land in the Valley and each acre creates about 80 pounds of nitrogen every year. Nitrogen is commonly found in pesticides and fertilizer and it seeps into the ground as nitrates. Animal waster is another byproduct of farms and about 1 to 2.5% of manure created by the Valley s 1.6 million dairy cows is nitrogen. Overall, fertilizers and animal waste applied to crops create 96% of nitrate contamination of drinking water in California. While agriculture and resulting ground water problems is far from unusual, the water situation in the San Joaquin Valley is rather ironic. Ninety percent of residents in the Valley rely on groundwater for drinking water. Farmers receive state and federal water subsidies for irrigation purposes that is not highly contaminated with nitrates. Farmers receive water both from California s Bay Delta and from more local runoff from the Sierra Nevada. They receive this water at about $70 per ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Man s life is independent. He is born not for the development of the society alone, but for the development of his self. B.R. Ambedkar Abstract Dalit is a category of self definition of Untouchables in post Independence India. It signifies a state of radical consciousness and seeks to interrogate and challenge the previous stereotypes that caste Hindu society had employed to describe untouchable as well as near untouchable castes and communities. However, in the contemporary context, the term dalit does not remain simply a descriptive category. The term dalit may be termed as a category of resistance which presupposes critical possibilities and potential of interpreting methodologies of dominance and resistance. Dalit literature emerged as the radical literature and challenged the norms, standards and principles of the so called mainstream brahminical literature, aesthetics and literary theory. The Introduction of Social Reforms by the Liberal Government in 1906 1914 There are multiple reasons why the Liberal government introduced acts of social reform between 1906 and 1914. The obvious reason is that there was a great need for reform(change) but there are also many other factors that played a part in the decision for a reform. This change was really required to help and improve Britain. The reason for this need for change was the poor conditions that all parts of Britain had been left in after the conservatives had been in power. • 53. Felons And The Voting Rights Act Felons are people who have been convicted of a felony. Felony is a crime, typically one involving violence, regarded as more serious than a misdemeanor, and usually punishable by imprisonment for more than one year or by death. In Maine and Vermont, felons never lose their right to vote, even while they are incarcerated. Vermont s 1793 Constitution stipulates that residents can lose their right to vote only if convicted of voter fraud. In Florida, Lowa and Virginia, felons and ex felons permanently lose their right to vote. Eleven states restrict voting even after a person has completed their prison sentence and finished probation or parole. Twenty states require completion of parole and probation before voting is allowed, and fourteen states allow felons to vote after they leave prison. Florida and Texas each disenfranchise more than 600,000 people. In 1789, Kentucky became the first U.S. stateto ban convicted criminals from voting. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said that felon disenfranchisement is a violation of the Voting Rights Act in her May 4, 2006 dissenting opinion in Hayden v. Pataki.
