Some slides I presented at MWC 2010 in the Innovation and Fragmentation stream, on behalf of O2 Litmus, although this is my own interpretation, not the official O2 line per se.
This presentation is aimed at operator folk generally, not just the API/dev-community folks, so it's a bit basic.
8. Slide Cool | connected = FAN power: Thematic API collaboration – connecting customers to developers via themes to create fans! (e.g. Music, Sports, Clubs, Film, Non-profit…)
9.
10. Usual fragmentation groan… 20,000 + handsets 25 + OSes 750 Operators Figures from Alan Quayle: http://www.alanquayle.com/ But how many “web app” platforms (> GAMEY)?
17/02/10 03:05 PM Confidential Page My name is Paul Golding + I’m speaking for O2 Telefonica But I’m not really an operator guy I’m more of an outsider/developer guy… So I’m not sure I’m going to stay “on message”
Developers are empowered by giving power to their apps – to their software… 17/02/10 Confidential Page
COOL: Software and APIs has to do something cool and interesting (to users and developers) – innovation CONNECTED: APIs and platforms are often useful in proportion to the size of community that can benefit from them CASH: Ideally, APIs and platforms can generate cash directly, or indirectly Community also useful – the ability to create/share common mindset around a platform/theme 17/02/10 03:05 PM Confidential Page
Is this a model for thinking about OneAPI and open APIs? A common destination for operator APIs? Hot (cool) APIs | Community | Interesting apps Lots of interesting stuff going on – not how many APIs, but how many apps using them… 17/02/10 03:05 PM Confidential Page
API scorecard… This one shows that the GAMEY dominates the API scene – these are platforms – think PLATFORM, not NETWORK… What should the operator or oneAPI scorecard be? PLATFORM INNOVATION… Notice that the leading telephony API in PW is NOT an operator… (even though there are operator telephony APIs in there – Orange etc.) 17/02/10 03:05 PM Confidential Page

Connecting the customers with the developers – this is the O2 Litmus way What APIs can support customer interaction, communication and dialogue… 17/02/10 03:05 PM Confidential Page
If you’re building apps in the app-exchange for Salesforce.com, the usual wisdom is to get 5 true fans first and then evangelize from there… Operators can help in this process – put certain types of fan in touch with the developers, add some other cool brands to the mix and then let things happen… Good for the fans, good for the developers, good for the operator 17/02/10 03:05 PM Confidential Page
APIs – innovation still required, but can be just exposing existing functionality in a packaged fashion, more amenable to web businesses Jajah – voice mash-ups | #Blue – messaging mash-ups 17/02/10 03:05 PM Confidential Page
The usual fragmentation groan… But where is the real problem and one that operators can address? Is it in the platform? 17/02/10 03:05 PM Confidential Page
This is the real opportunity It has to happen, else consumers won’t be able to conduct their digital lives very easily It is open to anyone BUT… needs a software/ecosystem mindset … very alien to operators This is not the kind of thing that will happen in the OMA! 17/02/10 03:05 PM Confidential Page
