Luhmann and the Sociology of Emotions
In this scientific talk I shall address a marginal topic in Luhmann’s work: that of emotions. Several authors have criticised not only the secondary role emotions play in Luhmann’s theory, but also his out of date (and flawed) description of emotions, since they are undifferentiated visceral activations of the organic system and processed latter by the psychic system (and latter by the social system), or they are collapsed in the symbiotic mechanisms that coordinate the relation between human bodies and social systems. My aim here is to review some elements established in the scientific literature of emotions, so we can go beyond the vague and narrow description of emotions present in Luhmann’s account, although I shall be faithful to his broader theoretical commitments. My proposal is that emotions can be understood as an instance of structural coupling among organic, psychic and social systems. Specifically, I maintain that emotions represent a threshold domain in which the normative expectations of social systems are bundled together with states of consciousness, in the form of beliefs that affirm individuals are entitled to have the right emotion in some interaction system, and the consequent bodily processes. To advance my proposal, I will focus on some of emotions and their relation to moral and legal norms. I will also tackle one of the most important body substrata of emotions: the human face.

3. WONDER –An experience of something that is very surprising, beautiful, amazing or hard to believe.
4 NACHES –A Yiddish word for feelings of pride in the accomplishments, or sometimes just the existence, of your actual offspring or mentored offspring. Crucial for motivating the nurture of infants and children.
5. FIERO- An Italian word that describes the enjoyment felt when you have met a challenge that stretched your capabilities.
6. PRIDE - A desire for others to know the pleasure you feel in your own accomplishments or the accomplishments of someone you either nurtured directly or identify with.
7. RELIEF –When something expected to be unpleasant, especially the threat of harm, is avoided or comes to an end.
8. SCHADENFREUDE - Enjoyment of the misfortunes of another person, usually a rival
9. AMUSEMENT - Light, playful feelings of enjoyment and good humor..
10. COMPASSION/JOY- Enjoyment felt when you act to relieve another person’s suffering.
11. REJOICING - A warm, uplifting feeling that people experience when they see acts of human goodness, kindness and compassion. Also called elevation.
12 SENSORY PLEASURE- Enjoyment derived through one of the five physical senses: sight, sound, touch, taste and smell.

There are several theories that attempt to explain the underlying mechanisms of emotions:
1. The James-Lange theory suggests that physiological arousal causes emotional experience. We know we feel sad because we cry.
2. In contrast, cognitive theories emphasize that we appraise situations mentally which then leads to emotions and physiological responses. We recognize emotions based on our evaluations.
3. Later theories integrated both physiological and cognitive elements. Schachter's two-factor theory proposed that arousal alone does not determine the quality of emotion, but rather our cognitive appraisal of the situation.

Luhmann and the Sociology of Emotions
In this scientific talk I shall address a marginal topic in Luhmann’s work: that of emotions. Several authors have criticised not only the secondary role emotions play in Luhmann’s theory, but also his out of date (and flawed) description of emotions, since they are undifferentiated visceral activations of the organic system and processed latter by the psychic system (and latter by the social system), or they are collapsed in the symbiotic mechanisms that coordinate the relation between human bodies and social systems. My aim here is to review some elements established in the scientific literature of emotions, so we can go beyond the vague and narrow description of emotions present in Luhmann’s account, although I shall be faithful to his broader theoretical commitments. My proposal is that emotions can be understood as an instance of structural coupling among organic, psychic and social systems. Specifically, I maintain that emotions represent a threshold domain in which the normative expectations of social systems are bundled together with states of consciousness, in the form of beliefs that affirm individuals are entitled to have the right emotion in some interaction system, and the consequent bodily processes. To advance my proposal, I will focus on some of emotions and their relation to moral and legal norms. I will also tackle one of the most important body substrata of emotions: the human face.
Atlas of emotions part 6 (enjoyment)
Enjoyment is the fifth of the five Emotions mentioned in Emotional Atlas which contains a number of related states, which differ in intensity. The states shown here are representative, not exhaustive. Further action .mood associated has also been discussed.
1. ECSTASY - Rapturous delight. A state of very great happiness, nearly overwhelming.
2. EXCITEMENT –Energy that, unlike other enjoyable emotions, is rarely felt slightly, but ranges from mid to high in intesnity. May merge with any of the emotions, generating a very active form of that emotion.
3. WONDER –An experience of something that is very surprising, beautiful, amazing or hard to believe.
4 NACHES –A Yiddish word for feelings of pride in the accomplishments, or sometimes just the existence, of your actual offspring or mentored offspring. Crucial for motivating the nurture of infants and children.
5. FIERO- An Italian word that describes the enjoyment felt when you have met a challenge that stretched your capabilities.
6. PRIDE - A desire for others to know the pleasure you feel in your own accomplishments or the accomplishments of someone you either nurtured directly or identify with.
7. RELIEF –When something expected to be unpleasant, especially the threat of harm, is avoided or comes to an end.
8. SCHADENFREUDE - Enjoyment of the misfortunes of another person, usually a rival
9. AMUSEMENT - Light, playful feelings of enjoyment and good humor..
10. COMPASSION/JOY- Enjoyment felt when you act to relieve another person’s suffering.
11. REJOICING - A warm, uplifting feeling that people experience when they see acts of human goodness, kindness and compassion. Also called elevation.
12 SENSORY PLEASURE- Enjoyment derived through one of the five physical senses: sight, sound, touch, taste and smell.

There are several theories that attempt to explain the underlying mechanisms of emotions:
1. The James-Lange theory suggests that physiological arousal causes emotional experience. We know we feel sad because we cry.
2. In contrast, cognitive theories emphasize that we appraise situations mentally which then leads to emotions and physiological responses. We recognize emotions based on our evaluations.
3. Later theories integrated both physiological and cognitive elements. Schachter's two-factor theory proposed that arousal alone does not determine the quality of emotion, but rather our cognitive appraisal of the situation.
