L.C. Distinguishes types of speeches and speech style (EN11/12OC-Ifj-17)
I. Objectives
At the end of the 60-minute period, 80% of the class will be able to:
1. Identify different speech styles in various contexts;
2. Recognize the importance of proper use of speech style through a reflection
paper; and
3. Demonstrate each type of speech in different scenarios through role-playing.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Types of speeches and speech styles
Concept: According to Joos (1976), speech style is the form of language used by
the speaker, and it is determined by the degree of formality. He classified this
approach into five categories. These styles are frozen, formal, consultative, casual,
and intimate.
Values: Formality awareness and effective communication.

answer the following questions:
1. What have you observed in the video?
2. What do you think is the content of the video all about?
3. Have you experienced talking in the same way to different instances?
4. Why do you think we talk differently based on who we are talking to?
5. Do you have any idea what our main topic is for this discussion?
D. Abstraction
Deductive teaching approach. The teacher will discuss the concept which needs
to be taught to ensure that the point of the lesson is firmly driven home. It will assist in
making sure that none of the crucial aspects are missed. Then the teacher will give
examples regarding the concept being taught.
Speech Style
When a person interacts with others, he or she uses a particular style of speaking or
speech style. A speech style also indicates the level of formality with which a person

Types of Speech Style Definition Examples

to large groups.

with friends

messages.
5. CONSULTATIVE

plan what he wants to say
Sentences tend to be
shorter and spontaneous.
● Schools consultations
● Companies
● Group discussion
● Teacher-student
● Doctor-patient,
● Expert-apprentice
Generalization

● What are the five types of speech styles?
6. ● In what situation will you use the frozen, formal, intimate, casual, and
consultative speech style?
E. Application
