The Woodglen Lake Dredging & Restoration project in Fairfax County, VA removed over 40,000 cubic yards of sediment from Woodglen Lake. The project improved maintenance access and installed a sediment forebay to simplify future dredging. Dredged sediment was disposed of innovatively at the County-owned I-95 Landfill Complex. Stream restoration and landscaping around the lake also enhanced the area. The project reduces annual sediment and nutrient loads in downstream waters.

This was my presentation given at GIS in the Rockies 2010 on monitoring the levees of Sacramento. I cover some history of the levees and flooding and talk about what's been done and the GIS side of the monitoring.

What it takes to manage Lake Okeechobee
The US Army Corps of Engineers made a decision on February 12th to increase the flow of water from Lake Okeechobee to the Caloosahatchee River to 1,700 cubic feet per second and to the St. Lucie River to 500 cubic feet per second. This was an increase from their previous decision on January 15th to release 1,500 cfs and 300 cfs to the respective rivers. However, current guidelines call for releasing up to 3,000 cfs and 1,170 cfs. The document also includes charts and information on the water levels and management of Lake Okeechobee.
Guyana Basin ADF® Letter of Recommendation
This letter summarizes projects performed by Apex Spectral Technology using 2D and 3D seismic data offshore Guyana. Apex's ADF dispersion imaging process correctly imaged the Liza discovery well and predicted the Turbot discovery well would be successful, while indicating the Skipjack well would be dry. ADF processing of the entire Canje Block 3D seismic data reveals potential hydrocarbon anomalies in the Maastrichtian interval and deeper targets that have not yet been drilled, but indicate many new large discoveries. Having a tool that has successfully predicted previous wells increases the value of JHI's asset in the Canje Block.
Accotink Tributary at Oakford Drive Stream Restoration
The Accotink Tributary at Oakford Drive Stream Restoration project included restoration of approximately 1,538 linear feet of stream using natural channel design for restoration, enhancing and stabilizing the degraded stream channel, bed and bank to stabilize, enhance and provide water quality benefits, aesthetics, and prevent further erosion.
Bradsby: Matagorda Bay System: Challenges and Threats
The Matagorda Bay system faces several challenges and threats, including an Alcoa Superfund site near Point Comfort that contaminated Lavaca Bay, declining water quality and flows in rivers due to development, and loss of oyster reefs. Conservation efforts aim to restore flows, improve water quality, and rebuild oyster reefs through projects like off-channel reservoirs, water monitoring programs, and oyster shell planting.

The report also included a 2-week look ahead for closures on SR-91, noting the on-ramp from Main Street to eastbound SR-91 is open but the on-ramp to I-15 is anticipated to open in August.
The Co:LAB District

The refunding is projected to provide average annual cash flow savings of $192,700 from 2017 to 2025 and $121,900 from 2016 to 2036, for total estimated savings of $3,074,600. It will also release the City Library as security for the bonds and lower the average interest rate from 4.28% to 2.97%. Subject to market conditions, the City Council plans to authorize issuance in June, receive a credit rating the following week, price the bonds in late June, and close on the transaction in early

The director of public works provided updates on several ongoing construction projects including the completion of a waterline project in June, continuing sidewalk improvements through June, and the temporary closure of three roads by BNSF for maintenance from May 22-24. The director also noted that a new traffic signal would be operational within a few weeks and an on-ramp modification making it one-way westbound only. Two-week look ahead schedules were provided for closures on SR-91 eastbound and westbound.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.
