We use past continuous tense when we talk about:
• action in progress at the certain past time (-ж байсан)
/өнгөрсөнд болж байсан үйлдэлд/
I was doing my homework by 6 o’clock yesterday.
• action in progress when another past action happened (-ж байхад сан4, хад4 -ж байсан)
/өнгөрсөнд нэг үйлдлийг болоход нь болж байсан үйлдэл/
They were fighting when she got there.
When I saw her she was copying from her notebook.
• two or more actions in progress at the same time in the past (-ж байхад -ж байсан)
/өнгөрсөнд зэрэг болж байсан 2 болон түүнээс дээш үйлдлүүд/
I was doing the cleaning while they were playing.
What were you doing when he was talking?
• backround description of a story (-ж байлаа)
/ өнгөрсөн үйл явдлыг дүрслэн ярихад тухайн үед нь болж байсан үйлдлүүд/
It was such a nice day that the sun was shining and the birds were singing.
It was the first day of school. My heart was pounding, and my legs were shaking to meet new
people.

Positive Form/Батлах хэлбэр:

I / He /She / Dorj was V(ing)
You / We / They / Students were V(ing)
Eg: I was having my lunch by noon.
Eg: He was having English class at this time yesterday.

S + wasn’t/weren’t + V(ing) + O + M
I / He /She / Dorj wasn’t V(ing)

Eg: She wasn’t sleeping when I called her.
