Electricity and magnetism have been studied for thousands of years, with ancient Greeks observing properties of amber and lodestone. Systematic study began in the 1500s with William Gilbert, who discovered poles of magnetism. In the 1700s, scientists like Charles du Fay and Benjamin Franklin experimented with static electricity and lightning. Michael Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction in 1821, showing a relationship between electricity and magnetism. James Clerk Maxwell then unified these phenomena with his electromagnetic field equations in the 1860s, enabling predictions like Hertz's electromagnetic waves. Marconi's radio used these waves to achieve wireless communication in 1895.
