Why Elasticsearch ?
• Cognos End of Support Announced (April 2018)
Cognos BI 10.2.x End of Support
• Migration to Cognos 11 for Connections customers would require significant effort.
• V11 also introduced a new 2 year lifecycle statement “IBM Cognos Analytics V11.0 will optionally support Maintenance
Support Releases to provide predictable support through regular, cumulative, in-place fixes for a minimum period of two
years from the general availability date.”
• Connections Customer Satisfaction with Cognos solution is low.
• Difficult to install, manage and support.
• Connections Cloud is using Elasticsearch.
• Using Elasticsearch for public and private cloud aligns with overall strategy to align cloud and private cloud solutions.
• Elasticsearch is open source solution that provides greater flexibility for IBM Connections and our customers.

Statement of Direction - Metrics
Elasticsearch Metrics is now available as an alternative software program for the Metrics feature within IBM Connections v6.
The IBM Connections v6 Metrics feature now supports both of these programs:
• IBM Cognos Business Intelligence v10.2.2
• Elasticsearch Metrics
On April 30, 2018 the following is planned:
• IBM Cognos Business Intelligence v10.2.x reaches End of Support.
• IBM Cognos Business Intelligence v10.2.x will no longer be available for download directly from Passport Advantage.
• Through the Cognos Continuing Support program option, active S&S Connections customers can continue to receive support for Cognos BI
10.2.x, as described here:
• Cognos BI 10.2.x Continuing Support http://www01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg22005165
• IBM Connections plans to deliver an interim release for IBM Connections v6 that will remove Cognos Business Intelligence v10.2.2 as a
supporting program from the Connections License.
• Existing Connections v6.0 customers who wish to continue using Cognos Business Intelligence v10.2.2 should NOT deploy this interim
release.
• This is a License only modification. There are no new features or functionality changes.
After April 30, 2018:
• Connections v6 customers who continue to use Cognos BI v10.2.2 as the metrics program will receive only non-defect support. The
Continuing Support program offering for Cognos BI v10.2.x, as described in the Technote: Cognos BI 10.2.x Continuing Support, is extended to
Connections v6 customers who maintain active S&S, and they will be entitled to any security fixes and defect fixes publicly released by the
Cognos team for BI v10.2.2. on Fix Central.
• If full defect support is required, customers should review the Cognos Continuing Support documentation and purchase a plan that meets
their requirements.

Overview
• Existing On Premises Metrics uses the relational database and Cognos for its reporting.
• With Connections 6.0 CR1 and Connections Component Pack 1* - we are providing
Elasticsearch. We are only using Elasticsearch Metrics capability for now, but are planning
to utilize additional capabilities of Elasticsearch in the future. It’s deployed via
Kubernetes.
• The Metrics applications are still Websphere based (for now), which makes this initial
release a hybrid of Pink and Blue code.
*Component Pack updated to 6.0.0.5 (2/28/2018)

Functional Overview
• Consistent UI approach between Public and On Premises
Core Functionality Remains the Same
• Administrators can view reports for organizational metrics
• Community owners can view reports for community metrics
• J2EE roles still restrict access to designated users/groups
Specific Differences between Cognos Metrics and Elasticsearch today
• No “All Years” date range
• No filtering by role, geography
• No export of data
• Rankings not weighted

Architecture

Installing Containerized Metrics
• Download,install 6.0 CR1 and Component Pack to set up Elasticsearch server.
• Detailed instructions for 6.0 CR1 are provided in Knowledge Center

Pink/Blue integration

• Admin must run a script on Pink server to send server host and port to Blue.
• Admin must copy SSL certificates from Pink to Blue.

No Outage Migration
• Customers are not required to migrate immediately.
• Third party solutions that utilize relational db need time to be modified.
• Separate apps allow both implementations to run.
• After Elasticsearch install, Cognos Metrics is still in place, capturing events and
providing it’s UI.
• New Metrics apps also installed so admins can migrate and verify functionality.

Migration overview
• Migrate data from existing relational database to Elasticsearch.
• This is an iterative process. Detailed instructions provided in IBM Knowledge Center .
• Run data migration scripts (copies data to Elasticsearch).
• Validate after scripts complete (available at /metricssc).
• Switch users to new metrics (run script).
• Re-run migration script (using date range) to account for content that occurred during
original migration script run.
• This step can be run multiple times if needed.
