The document discusses big data benchmarking and summarizes several benchmarks that could be integrated into the DataBench framework. It describes benchmarks like HiBench, SparkBench, YCSB, BigBench, and ABench that evaluate different aspects of big data systems like micro-benchmarks, streaming, and end-to-end workflows. The goal of DataBench is to provide a methodology and tools for benchmarking, including accessing multiple benchmarks, homogenizing metrics, and deriving business KPIs to help practitioners evaluate big data platforms and technologies.
Continuous Intelligence: Keeping your AI Application in ProductionDr. Arif Wider
A talk by Arif Wider & Emily Gorcenski presented at NDC Porto '20
Abstract:
It is already challenging to transition a machine learning model or AI system from the research space to production, and maintaining that system alongside ever-changing data is an even greater challenge. In software engineering, Continuous Delivery practices have been developed to ensure that developers can adapt, maintain, and update software and systems cheaply and quickly, enabling release cycles on the scale of hours or days instead of weeks or months. Nevertheless, in the data science world Continuous Delivery is rarely been applied holistically.
This is partly due to different workflows: data scientists regularly work on whole sets of hypotheses, whereas software engineers work more linearly even when evaluating multiple implementation alternatives. Therefore, existing software engineering practices cannot be applied as-is to machine learning projects. Learn how we used our expertise in both fields to adapt practices and tools to allow for Continuous Intelligence–the practice of delivering AI applications continuously.

DataDevOps: A Manifesto for a DevOps-like Culture Shift in Data & AnalyticsDr. Arif Wider
A talk by Sebastian Herold & Dr. Arif Wider at TDWI 2018 Munich.
Abstract:
More and more companies migrate their monolithic applications to a microservices architecture. However, maintaining a consistent and usable data landscape has only become more challenging by this: huge amounts of structured and unstructured data, and hundreds of data sources.
Furthermore, data-driven product development multiplies the analytics requirements: every product team needs constantly updated and specially tailored metrics which often combine product specific data with company wide data.
Having a centralized data team does not scale in this setting as it becomes the bottleneck between data producers and data consumers.
We created a Manifesto based on five general themes which break with traditional separation of roles and show a path how to deal with distributed data in a federal and scalable fashion. This leads to DataDev: a culture shift similar to DevOps in which application developers own their data and take over responsibilities for data & analytics.

Agile Testing Days 2017 Intoducing AgileBI Sustainably - ExcercisesRaphael Branger
"We now do Agile BI too” is often heard in todays BI community. But can you really "create" agile in Business Intelligence projects? This presentation shows that Agile BI doesn't necessarily start with the introduction of an iterative project approach. An organisation is well advised to establish first the necessary foundations in regards to organisation, business and technology in order to become capable of an iterative, incremental project approach in the BI domain.
In this session you learn which building blocks you need to consider. In addition you will see what a meaningful sequence to these building blocks is. Selected aspects like test automation, BI specific design patterns as well as the Disciplined Agile Framework will be explained in more and practical details.
Real life use cases from across Europe (Walid Aoudi - Cognizant)

Big Data lay at the core of the strong data economy that is emerging in Europe. Although both large enterprises and SMEs acknowledge the potential of Big Data in disrupting the market and business models, this is not reflected in the growth of the data economy. The lack of trusted, secure, ethical-driven personal data platforms and privacy-aware analytics, hinders the growth of the data economy and creates concerns. The main considerations are related to the secure sharing of personal and proprietary/industrial data, and the definition of a fair remuneration mechanism that will be able to capture, produce, release and cash out the value of data, always for the benefit of all the involved stakeholders.
This webinar will focus on how such concerns that pertain to privacy, ethics and intellectual property rights can be tackled, by allowing individuals to take ownership and control of their data and share them at will, through flexible data sharing and fair compensation schemes with other entities (companies or not), as researched by the DataVaults project.

Today’s data marketplaces are large, closed ecosystems that are in the hands of few established players or a consortium that decide on the rules, policies, etc.
Yet, the main barrier of the European data economy is the fact that current data spaces and marketplaces are “siloes”, without support for data exchange across their boundaries.
This webinar reveals how these boundaries can be overcome through the i3-MARKET “backplane”, which is an infrastructure able to connect all the stakeholders providing the suitable level of trust (consensus-based self-governing, auditability, reliability, verifiable credentials), security (P2P encryption, cryptographic proofs) and privacy (self-sovereign identity, zero-knowledge proof, explicit user consent).

BigDataPilotDemoDays - I BiDaaS Application to the Manufacturing Sector WebinarBig Data Value Association
The new data-driven industrial revolution highlights the need for big data technologies to unlock the potential in various application domains. To this end, BDV PPP projects I-BiDaaS, BigDataStack, Track & Know and Policy Cloud deliver innovative technologies to address the emerging needs of data operations and applications. To fully exploit the sustainability and take full advantage of the developed technologies, the projects onboarded pilots that exhibit their applicability in a wide variety of sectors. In the Big Data Pilot Demo Days, the projects will showcase the developed and implemented technologies to interested end-users from the industry as well as technology providers, for further adoption.
One of the main goals of the I-BiDaaS project is to provide a Big Data as a self-service solution that will empower the actual employees of European companies in targeted sectors (banking, manufacturing, telecom), i.e., the true decision-makers, with the insights and tools they need in order to make the right decisions in an agile way. In this big data pilot webinar, we will demonstrate in a step by step fashion the I-BiDaaS self-service solution and its application to the banking sector. In more detail, we will present an overview of the I-BiDaaS project focusing on the requirements of the CaixaBank pilot study, the I-BiDaaS architecture with its core technologies, and a step by step demo of the I-BiDaaS solution. Last but not least, we will show through CaixaBank's success story how I-BiDaaS can resolve data availability, data sharing, and breaking silos challenges in the banking domain.

3. Goals&Objectives
• The DataBench Toolbox will be a component-based system of both vertical (holistic/business/data type driven)
and horizontal (technical area based) big data benchmarks. following the layered architecture provide by the
BDVA reference model.
Holistic benchmarking approach for big data
• It should be able to work or integrate with existing benchmarking initiatives and resources where possible.
Not reinventing the wheel, but use wheels to build a new car
• The Toolbox will investigate gaps of industrial significance in the big data benchmarking field and contribute to
overcome them.
Filling gaps
• The Toolbox will implement ways to derive as much as possible the DataBench technical metrics and business
KPIs from the metrics extracted from the integrated benchmarking.
Homogenising metrics
• It will include a web-based visualization layer to assist to the final users to specify their benchmarking
requirements, such as selected benchmark, data generators, workloads, metrics and the preferred data, volume
and velocity, as well as searching and monitoring capabilities.

Year Name Type
2010 HiBench Big data benchmark suite for evaluating different big data frameworks. 19
workloads including synthetic micro-benchmarks and real-world applications from
6 categories which are micro, machine learning, sql, graph, websearch and
streaming.
2015 SparkBench System for benchmarking and simulating Spark jobs. Multiple workloads
organized in 4 categories.
2010 Yahoo! Cloud System
Benchmark (YSCB)
Evaluates performance of different “key-value” and “cloud” serving systems,
which do not support the ACID properties. The YCSB++ , an extension, includes
many additions such as multi-tester coordination for increased load and eventual
consistency measurement.
2017 TPCx-IoT Based on YCSB, but with significant changes. Workloads of data ingestion and
concurrent queries simulating workloads on typical IoT Gateway systems. Dataset
with data from sensors from electric power station(s)

Micro-benchmarks:
11. Some of the benchmarks to integrate (II)
Year Name Type
2015 Yahoo Streaming
Benchmark (YSB)
The Yahoo Streaming Benchmark is a streaming application benchmark
simulating an advertisement analytics pipeline.
2013 BigBench/TPCx-BB BigBench is an end-to-end, technology agnostic, application-level
benchmark that tests the analytical capabilities of a Big Data platform. It is
based on a fictional product retailer business model.
2017 BigBench V2 Similar to BigBench, BigBench V2 is an end-to-end, technology agnostic,
application-level benchmark that tests the analytical capabilities of a Big
Data platform
2018 ABench (Work-in-
Progress)
New type of multi-purpose Big Data benchmark covering many big data
scenarios and implementations. Extends other benchmarks such as
BigBench
12
Application-oriented benchmarks:
12. ▪ The BigBench specification comprises
two key components:
▪ a data model specification
▪ a workload/query specification.
▪ The structured part of the BigBench data
model is adopted from the TPC-DS data
model
▪ The data model specification is
implemented by a data generator, which
is based on an extension of PDGF.
▪ BigBench 1.0 workload specification
consists of 30 queries/workloads (10
structured from TPC-DS, and 20 adapted
from a McKinsey report on Big Data use
cases and opportunities).
▪ BigBench 2.0 …
The BigBench data model
The BigBench 2.0 overview

13.
14. ▪ Benchmark any step of the Linked Data
lifecycle
▪ Ensure that benchmarking results can be
found, accessed, integrated and reused
easily (FAIR principles)
▪ Benchmark Big Data platforms by being the
first distributed benchmarking platform for
Linked data.
▪ The Hobbit platform comprises several
components:
▪ Single components are implemented as
independent containers.
▪ Communication between these components is
done via a message bus.
▪ Everything is dockerized, from the
benchmarked system to all the components
Principles:
• Users can test systems with the HOBBIT
benchmarks without having to worry about
finding standardized hardware
• New benchmarks can be easily created and
added to the platform by third parties.
• The evaluation can be scaled out to large datasets
and on distributed architectures.
• The publishing and analysis of the results of
different systems can be carried out in a uniform
manner across the different benchmarks.
15. Summary
