INTRODUCTION
• Wear is damage to a surface as a result of relative motion
with respect to another substance.
• Erosive Wear
Caused by the impact of particles (solid/liquid) against a solid
surface.
– Dust particles impacting on gas turbine blades.
– Slurry impacting on pump impeller.
--Cavitation.
• Erosive wear is function of:
– Particles velocity (K.E.),
– impact angle, and
– size of abrasive
GENERAL EXPRESSION
Wear volume by erosion ,
V= K.A(α). i(v).M
A(α)= function of angle of impact of particle.
K is empirical constant
i(v) = (particle velocity)^n
n= 2 to 2.5 for metals
n =2.5 to 3 for ceramics
M = (particle size)^x

• Specimen –Al2O3 coated(0.5 mm thick) on High Chrome Cast Iron
(Used in impeller blades)
• Abrasive Slurry – Ash particles mixed with water
Variable parameters

• Ash Concentration(ppm)
• Particle size(micrometer)
OBSERVATIONS
Weight Loss Vs Particle Size
RESULTS
• Specimen before and after slurry test
• With INCREASE in rotational speed , ash concentration and
particle size Erosion wear INCREASES .
• For Erosion wear the effect of particle size of abrasive is less
as compared to other parameters .
SLURRY TEST FOR DUCTILE MATERIAL
• Specimen – Aluminum (ductile and expected
to give higher wear rates).
• Abrasive Slurry - Silica sand + Water
• Parameter Range
• Effect of Impact Angle & Particle size on Wear
DEVELOPMENT OF CORRELATION
• Based on the data points as obtained during the
experimentation with regression analysis a correlation were
developed with an R^2 value of 0.91. Correlation has an error
band of 16%.
Ew = 0.075x(θ^0.12)x(Cw^1.09)x(V^3.55)(d^1.37)
Where,
θ = Impact Angle in Degree
Cw = Concentration by weight in %age
V = Velocity in m/sec
d = Particle Size in mm
RESULTS
1. The erosion wear of Aluminum increases with increase
in impact angle attaining a maximum at 45° and then
reduces at 90°.
2. Erosion wear of Aluminum increases linearly with
increase in particle size. The rate of increase at low
impact angles are lower compared to that at higher
impact angles.
3. The increase in erosion wear at higher solid concentration is
not very significant.
4. At higher velocities, the weight loss in the reduced duration
was significant.
CONCLUSION
• Particle size follows Power Law for erosion
wear.
i.e. Erosion wear α (particle size)^n ,Where
n>0
• For every material increase in particle size will
result in increase in EROSION WEAR.
• Erosion wear can be controlled by using
impact angle and ash concentration.

INTRODUCTION • Wear is damage to a surface as a result of relative motion with respect to another substance. • Erosive Wear Caused by the impact of particles (solid/liquid) against a solid surface. – Dust particles impacting on gas turbine blades. – Slurry impacting on pump impeller. --Cavitation. • Erosive wear is function of: – Particles velocity (K.E.), – impact angle, and – size of abrasive
  • 4. GENERAL EXPRESSION Wear volume by erosion , V= K.A(α). i(v).M A(α)= function of angle of impact of particle. K is empirical constant i(v) = (particle velocity)^n n= 2 to 2.5 for metals n =2.5 to 3 for ceramics M = (particle size)^x

  • 9. RESULTS • Specimen before and after slurry test • With INCREASE in rotational speed , ash concentration and particle size Erosion wear INCREASES . • For Erosion wear the effect of particle size of abrasive is less as compared to other parameters .

  • 14. DEVELOPMENT OF CORRELATION • Based on the data points as obtained during the experimentation with regression analysis a correlation were developed with an R^2 value of 0.91. Correlation has an error band of 16%. Ew = 0.075x(θ^0.12)x(Cw^1.09)x(V^3.55)(d^1.37) Where, θ = Impact Angle in Degree Cw = Concentration by weight in %age V = Velocity in m/sec d = Particle Size in mm
  • 15. RESULTS 1. The erosion wear of Aluminum increases with increase in impact angle attaining a maximum at 45° and then reduces at 90°. 2. Erosion wear of Aluminum increases linearly with increase in particle size. The rate of increase at low impact angles are lower compared to that at higher impact angles. 3. The increase in erosion wear at higher solid concentration is not very significant. 4. At higher velocities, the weight loss in the reduced duration was significant.
  • 16. CONCLUSION • Particle size follows Power Law for erosion wear. i.e. Erosion wear α (particle size)^n ,Where n>0 • For every material increase in particle size will result in increase in EROSION WEAR. • Erosion wear can be controlled by using impact angle and ash concentration.
