Information technology (IT) is the application of
computers and telecommunications equipment to
store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data, often in
the context of a business or other enterprise.
➜ The term information technology in its
modern sense first appeared in a 1958
article published in the Harvard Business
Review.
➜ Consists of three categories:
1. Processing
2. Using of statistics as a mathematical device for decision
making
3. High order thinking using computer programs
➜ Distinguishing phases of IT development.

relative to the rate of inflation.
 More innovative nontraditional providers will take
over a greater share of the undergraduate
education market. They will deliver higher
education more cheaply.
 The knowledge base will atrophy as research
universities falter.
