Technology Use vs. Technology Integration Keynote speaker Allison Avery, W401 Is there a difference? Why or why not?
Is there a difference, or are they the same thing? Yes, there IS a difference! Yet, both practices are similar and important…
Technology Integration The National Forum on Education Statistics (2005) defines technology integration as “ The incorporation of technology resources and technology-based practices into the daily routines, work, and management of schools“ (part 8). Resources are computers and specialized software, network-based communication systems, and other equipment and infrastructure .
Technology integration includes… “ Collaborative work and communication, Internet-based research, remote access to instrumentation, network-based transmission and retrieval of data, and other methods.” National Forum on Education Statistics (2005) But that’s a lot of jargon! In the classroom, technology integration can mean…
Having appropriate technologies available, their uses understood, and able to use! Like: Computers in the classroom or a computer lab White boards Projectors Monitors T.V.s Programs to use, if necessary Etc.!
Which leads us to… Technology use! Because what good is having technologies if you do not use, or know how to use, them?
Once technology has been integrated into the classroom, teachers and students can start to use it! There are tons of uses for technology in the classroom, like educational computer games, creating newsletters, devices for students with special needs, communicating with classes across the world, and more! This can allow for an enhanced and broadened learning experience for teachers and students! “ In the 21 st century, the ability to be a lifelong learner will, for many people, be dependent on their ability to access and benefit from online learning” ( www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1568480,00.html) .
So, to wrap things up…
Pop Quiz! 1) Are technology use and technology integration the same? Yes! No! 2) Can you use technology without it first being integrated? Yes! No! 3) Can integrating and using technology in the classroom broaden and enhance the learning experience? Yes! No!
