Edwards Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 18, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 18. It is the second most common autosomal trisomy after Down syndrome. Individuals with Edwards Syndrome often have intellectual disabilities, heart defects, kidney abnormalities, and other internal organ disorders. Most infants with Edwards Syndrome die before or shortly after birth, with the median lifespan being only 5 to 15 days. Very few individuals with Edwards Syndrome survive past one year of age.
