Educational Philosophy
Writing my educational philosophy has required me to do an extensive amount of personal research
that has taken me on some wonderful, inward journeys over the past few months. Voyages through
my cognitive and behavioral personas from the beginning of my educational endeavor back in 1992
up until the present day. I have been digging diligently through my archives pulling out old papers I
composed regarding my initial views toward education. I have reflected on my days in the writing
center at George Mason University as a composition tutor. Plus, I evaluate myself in the classroom
now as I teach at the local community college as well as in the local junior high and high schools for

This type of instructional method, and its varying implementations, provides the opportunity for
each student to make a substantial contribution to his/her team. This contribution is where learning
occurs. I do realize that there is a large gap between research and practice, and I know that
cooperative learning is not a definite solution to my goals. What it provides is a means to a
continuous labor of love moving closer to this goal, not a means to an end. Therefore, as an ongoing
task, research will evolve as will my classroom practice. But, I do see some implementation rules
that appear to be steadfast and help form my thoughts on constructing my future cooperative
learning classroom.
Room preparation is the first rule. A classroom that I observed during a field placement assignment
for Concord College had five, round tables with five chairs at each along with a computer. The
round tables were organized in a horseshoe shape with the teacher's workstation located at the
opening of the "U". This was a great example of how a cooperative learning room must be set up to
enhance all forms of active interaction. The groups must be small and contain mixed abilities as well
as a combination of gender and ethnic diversity. Third, an award system must be established along

Teaching is something that has always been close to my heart. Ever since I was a little girl all I ever

To be an effective teacher requires perseverance , which is something that is extremely important to
the profession as a whole. Teaching at times can be very stressful and frustrating and like any job it
can be very easy to give up and quit when times get tough or seem to be spiraling out of control.
Children are very sensitive with their feelings and emotions and sometimes the blame is put on you
the teacher by the student even though it may not be your fault in whatever happened. Parents can
be very hard to get along with as well and it requires a lot of composure in explaining issues that

Something that can be easily overlooked in being a teacher is the trait of being a strong moral

needs. I would like my students to feel comfortable, develop their communication skills, and build

I believe that students learn best through experiences and hands–on activities. It is my job to show
the students what we are learning and why, so through my teaching, they should never question what
we are doing. I want my students to come into the classroom each day excited to learn because they

Around 2,300 years ago, Aristotle raised many issues regarding the opposing perspectives about the
practice of education. He affirmed that there is no universal accord about whether education should
be directed more towards intellectual objectives or towards the character of the individual. He also
proposed that there is doubt about whether education should be aimed at notion valuable for
everyday life or at notions approving to virtues. As a matter of fact, modern day educators are still
deliberating the concerns Aristotle raised. Ultimately, the most primitive dilemma the philosophy of
education is its differing aims. Philosophers of education question, what are the proper aims and
leading principles of education? What is the appropriate criterion for assessing academic attempts,
educational institutions, procedures, and outcomes? In fact, diverse proposals to resolving these
significant affairs have given rise to contrasting schools of thought in the philosophy of education.
This exploratory paper will analyze and inquire three schools of thought: Essentialism, Critical
Theory and Pragmatism. Each of these schools of thought considers their principles the best. The

I feel that if this is achieved the student will gain the ability to self–motivate for the sake of learning,
and not because it is required. If the student is able to acquire a lifelong love of learning then, in my
opinion, knowledge will not begin and end with the ringing of a school bell. Learning, rather, will be
fueled by continuous curiosity and a desire to discover.
Upon entering my classroom students will encounter a place of discovery where they will be
encouraged to think and be creative. Reading lessons will incorporate questions that check for
understanding and discussions that encourage students to voice their opinions. Science will be
guided, hands–on activities, promoting discovery. Students will be asked to hypothesize before
learning the facts. In doing this, I hope that I can establish a positive learning environment, moving

This perspective focuses on building knowledge through activities. While pursuing my education
degree with a specialization in math, I have realized that constructivism is very important. Math is a
gradual building up of information. Each step builds on another. Students in math classes also need

Ever since I was in the seventh grade I knew that teaching was the profession for me. I had a
wonderful teacher, Cathy Adkins, who was and still is my greatest inspiration. She was not like any

Breaking out my pragmatist side again, student involvement in making classroom rules is also quite
important. Within limits, I will allow the students to democratically create the rules. I, on the other
hand, will decide the appropriate consequences for the classroom delinquency. If the students are
active partners in making the rules, they are more likely to follow these set rules. But how will my
class be set up?
The teacher should be the center of attention for the students. To ensure this I will have the desk
placed at the front of the classroom with the student's desks in rows facing the appropriate direction.
I want bulletin boards that are colorful and full of the past. I want to inundate my students with
knowledge at every turn. I want the class to be free flowing because I do not want to stand behind a
podium to lecture; I want to be able to walk around the room freely. I feel it makes the lecture a bit
more interesting, and less "humdrum."
Textbooks are where I see the need for some type of educational reform. They are completely

I can still remember coming home from school after an exciting day in the first grade. I would go
straight to my room, line all of my dolls up in the floor, and "teach" them everything I had learned
earlier that day. But of course, not every child who pretends to be a teacher in his or her early years
actually becomes a teacher. So although I enjoyed "teaching," I never really considered it as a choice
for my life–long career.
But the summer after ninth grade made me rethink my options. My best friend's dad was in charge
of a summer camp for underprivileged children. He needed some junior counselors for the week, so

As the week progressed and friendships formed between everyone, I realized the importance of the
camp to all that were involved. To the counselors it was a learning experience, as well as a time to
appreciate all that we would usually take for granted; to the campers it was a time to learn and make
new friends, and for most of them, it would also serve as their only form of a summer vacation. So
although we were all exhausted by the end of the week, we had a great time.
After seeing the smiles that seemed almost permanent that week, I realized how important it is to
work with and help younger children. I also learned what it's like knowing that you've made a

Educational Philosophy Educational Philosophy Writing my educational philosophy has required me to do an extensive amount of personal research that has taken me on some wonderful, inward journeys over the past few months. Voyages through my cognitive and behavioral personas from the beginning of my educational endeavor back in 1992 up until the present day. I have been digging diligently through my archives pulling out old papers I composed regarding my initial views toward education. I have reflected on my days in the writing center at George Mason University as a composition tutor. Plus, I evaluate myself in the classroom now as I teach at the local community college as well as in the local junior high and high schools for my student ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This type of instructional method, and its varying implementations, provides the opportunity for each student to make a substantial contribution to his/her team. This contribution is where learning occurs. I do realize that there is a large gap between research and practice, and I know that cooperative learning is not a definite solution to my goals. What it provides is a means to a continuous labor of love moving closer to this goal, not a means to an end. Therefore, as an ongoing task, research will evolve as will my classroom practice. But, I do see some implementation rules that appear to be steadfast and help form my thoughts on constructing my future cooperative learning classroom. Room preparation is the first rule. A classroom that I observed during a field placement assignment for Concord College had five, round tables with five chairs at each along with a computer. The round tables were organized in a horseshoe shape with the teacher's workstation located at the opening of the "U". This was a great example of how a cooperative learning room must be set up to enhance all forms of active interaction. The groups must be small and contain mixed abilities as well as a combination of gender and ethnic diversity. To the counselors it was a learning experience, as well as a time to appreciate all that we would usually take for granted; to the campers it was a time to learn and make new friends, and for most of them, it would also serve as their only form of a summer vacation. So although we were all exhausted by the end of the week, we had a great time. After seeing the smiles that seemed almost permanent that week, I realized how important it is to work with and help younger children. I also learned what it's like knowing that you've made a difference in someone's life. I've been a counselor at that same camp for two more years since that first summer, and it gets better every time. Even though it can be difficult and frustrating to work with children sometimes, the reward that you, as well as the children, receive is well worth the effort.
