A study of 20 teachers in Portugal found that students who were taught self-assessment skills learned information within 20 weeks instead of the normal 38 weeks. Self-regulated learning involves students coordinating cognitive resources, emotions, and actions based on learning goals. Metacognition refers to what one knows and can do regarding their own abilities and learning, while motivation involves students' desire and willingness to learn. Effective learning involves balancing challenge and ability through constructive feedback, specific and achievable goals, and student ownership of the learning process.
