Hygge Haiku Directions
A haiku is a Japanese poem of three lines and a syllabic pattern of five (first line), seven (second
line), and five syllables (third line) respectively. Traditionally the haiku evokes images of the
natural world.
Hygge is a Danish word referring to the quality of coziness and comfortable surroundings that
invoke an inner sense of well-being. …Think of sitting by a fireplace wrapped in a blanket on a
cold winter’s day while sipping a cup of cocoa.
For this assignment, you will be writing five hygge haikus. Don’t worry! You will have lots of
support, such as the Hygge Haiku Word Bank, Hygge Haiku Imagery Graphic Organizer (for
strong, sensory details), and Hygge Haiku Poetry Rubric. So, grab a mug of hot chocolate, your
warmest blanket, and write some snuggly hygge haikus!
Here are some Hygge Haiku examples:
Gray clouds quilt the skies
Frozen tears creep down my face
I love wintertime!
Hot bath, Hot cocoa
Makes bone-chilling cold worth it
Where are my wool socks?
Feverish and sick
Runny nose and frozen toes
Don’t I look pretty?
