EdProfSt100- Hapai Ākonga Integration of te reo Māori Language is the vehicle by which thoughts, customs, desires, hopes, frustrations, history, mythology, prayers, dreams and knowledge are communicated from one person to another. It has been said that a people without their own language have no power or unique identity. (Cleve Barlow, 2001)

Editor's Notes

  1. 2003, I was a kaiawhina supporting composite rumaki reo / immersion Maori whanau of year 1-3 in literacy and numeracy and year 1-6 student groups in ICT. I started in mainstream with a focus on supporting mainstream staff in the integration of te reo Maori into the curriculum… This year 6 teacher was looking at origin myths with her class, which gave us space to create our own digital story retelling of the Rangi and Papa myth.
  2. Myths, digital stories, celebrations, beginnings and endings, Sasa, dramatic re-telling, science – seasons, night and day, preserving food (latter carried out by another kaiako)
  3. The following term the same class was looking at running their own bakery for a week – so they were learning about everything from the baking of bread to bilingual packaging… Whakatauki…
