The European Union has one of the largest interpreting services in the world to facilitate communication across its 24 official languages. The number of official languages has grown with each expansion of the EU, starting with 4 languages and increasing to 24 currently. Interpreters enable understanding between EU members and must have a perfect command of both their passive and active languages, broad general knowledge, and adaptability. The Directorate-General for Interpretation organizes interpreting services and multilingual meetings. The International Association of Conference Interpreters represents over 3,000 professional interpreters globally.
