Timeline of Melbourne
➢ Prior to 1835 = The area of Melbourne was occupied by 5 aboriginal groups of the
Kulin Nation. They were hunter-gatherers.
➢ 1835 = John Batman buys 243,000 ha of land with "trinkets" from the Aboriginal
population. Land is settled for agriculture.
➢ 1837 = The new settlement is named Melbourne (after the British Prime Minister
at the time: Lord Melbourne). The rectangular street grids are laid out.
➢ 1842 = Melbourne is classified as a town with a population of 10,000.
➢ 1850's = The gold-rush of the state attracts people to town. Melbourne grows to
become the largest city of Australia (population 500,000).

➢ 1901 = Australia is declared a federation and parliament sits in Melbourne.
➢ 1906 = The first electric trams run.
➢ 1920s = Large urbanisation expansion; the City Baths, Shrine of Remembrance are
built.
➢ 1956 = Melbourne hosts the Olympic games.
➢ 1960's = Large migration boats from Italy, Greece and Turkey reach Melbourne,
diversifying the Anglo-Saxon population.
21st Century = Melbourne is a thriving city. Nicknamed the "sporting capital of the
world". UNESCO designated Melbourne a city of literature.
