Editorial Analysis Essay
ENG 201H 2/10/13 Editorial Analysis "We are all equal; it is not birth but virtue alone that makes the
difference." This insightful quote from the famous French philosopher and historian "Voltaire"
seems to accurately represent the beliefs of the factions of American citizens pushing to allow
women to fight in combat positions within the US Armed Forces. Though the topic has just recently
been boosted into the media and congressional politics, it has been long debated. A rather current
editorial from USA Today titled: "Open Combat Positions to Women" outlines the recent
developments in the status of a much disputed and controversial issue facing the nation today.
Though somewhat less in–depth than some opposing opinions, the...show more content...
Also in the beginning of the editorial, the author refers back to the two women who fought on the
front lines. Those women as well as two other servicewomen filed suit in attempt to overturn the
law established in 1994 which states as follows: "Rule: Service members are eligible to be
assigned to all positions for which they are qualified, except that women shall be excluded from
assignment to units below the brigade level whose primary mission is to engage in direct combat
on the ground, as defined below. Definition: Direct ground combat is engaging an enemy on the
ground with individual or crew served weapons, while being exposed to hostile fire and to a high
probability of direct physical contact with the hostile forces personnel. Direct combat take s place
well forward on the battlefield while locating an closing with the enemy to defeat then by fire,
maneuver or shock effect." The author goes on to state that, despite what happens in court with the
lawsuit filed by the four servicewomen, the issue should never have to go to court in order to be
acted upon. The author seems to think that it is simply a matter of logical thinking. Some other
supporting evidence in the editorial is the Author's

Tecumseh Essay example
Tecumseh ,Shawnee war chief, was born at Old Piqua, on the Mad River in western Ohio. In 1774,
his father, Puckeshinwa, was killed at the Battle of Point Pleasant, and in 1779 his mother,
Methoataske, accompanied those Shawnees who migrated to Missouri, later died. Raised by an
older sister, Tecumpease, Tecumseh would play war games with other fellow youths in his tribe.
Tecumseh accompanied an older brother, Chiksika, on a series of raids against frontier settlements in
Kentucky and Tennessee in the late 1780's. Chiksika had a vision that he would not survive the
battle at Buchanan's station he went ahead as plan and attacked the stockade and was mortally

Tecumseh slowly transformed his brother's religious following into a political movement. In 1808
Tecumseh and the Prophet moved their village to the juncture of the Tippecanoe and Wabash rivers,
where the new settlement, Prophetstown, continued to attract Indians. After the loss of much Indian
land at the Treaty of Fort Wayne, Tecumseh gradually eclipsed his brother as the primary leader of
the movement. He traveled throughout the Midwest urging tribes to form a political confederacy to
prevent any further erosion of their lands. In November 1811, while Tecumseh was in the South
attempting to recruit the Creeks into his confederacy, U.S. forces marched against Prophetstown. In
the subsequent Battle of the Tippecanoe they defeated the Prophet, burned the settlement, and
destroyed the Indians' food supplies. After returning from the South Tecumseh tried to rebuild his
shattered confederacy. But when the War of 1812 broke out, he withdrew to Michigan where he
assisted the British in the capture of Detroit and led pro–British Indians in small actions in southern
Michigan and northern Ohio (Fort Meigs). When William Henry Harrison invaded Upper Canada,
Tecumseh reluctantly accompanied the British retreat. He was killed by American forces at the
Battle of the Thames on October 5, 1813. Although they never found the body of

Smoking
Introduction
Some governments have banned smoking in all public places. Smoking has been proven to be very
dangerous to health. Nonetheless 40 % of the population smokes. Actually I am a non smoker,
although I used to be a smoker.
Most people try out smoking when they are young ; many youths think smoking is a good grown–up
habit. Furthermore many young people begin smoking as an act of rebellion and independence.
Young smokers start smoking at their age of 12 or 13 just to get a taste of , what it is like. Some of
them find it disgusting and unhealthy and some of them find it cool.
Fact's and Figures
Tobacco use kills about 420, 000 smokers each year. According to recent studies 53.000 nonsmokers
die each year from...show more content...
In my opinion they should introduce them at the earliest possible moment. I totally agree with the
decision, that somebody wants to smoke the company must set up a smoking areas in the
workplace. I don't think it takes away some of their freedom, because they take my freedom in that i
must breathe the cigarette smoke every day. Many people will agree that smoking is easy to start
and hard to quit. By the way they don't even think about whether they disturb non–smokers with their
smoke. Personally this is the major problem with some smokers.
Disadvantages of smoking
As far as I am concerned, the main problem with smoking is that it causes lung and mouth cancer,
and not just in smokers. I dislike yellow teeth or bad breath. From my point of view there are a
large number of impressionable people who are easily influenced and might try to pick up their
peers habits. As they want to be similar to them. In my opinion this is a foolish thing. I don't want
to be somebody else, and I don't want to be suitable for somebody either. Hopefully in the future
people are going to give smoking careful thought.
Concluison
I give the government's enactment my full support, because I am a nonsmoker. In addition we
non–smokers restricted by smokers, in that I had to suffer smoke where I didn't want to. If I were in
their shoes, I would put up with the

Essay On Overdose
The United States is currently in the midst of an Opioid overdose epidemic. Deaths from overdoses
of prescription drugs continue to be the leading cause of unintentional death for Americans. Last
year, 47,055 people died from drug overdoses – 1.5 times greater than the number killed in car
crashes. Overdose is an excessive and very dangerous dose of a drug. Opioids are substances that act
on opioid receptors to produce morphine–like effects. Medically, they are primarily used for pain
relief. The most commonly prescribed opioid medications are Vicodin, OxyContin, and Percocet.
Drug overdoses can be either accidental or intentional. They occur when a person takes more than
the medically recommended dose. Treatments for overdose include medications...show more

Today, Naloxone is now being prescribed and dispensed to people at risk of opioid overdose. The
number of overdose deaths has quadrupled since 1999. Statistics show that increased availability,
relatively low price (compared to prescription opioids), and high purity of heroin in the United States
is one of the reasons why death rates are so high. From 2000 to 2015, more than half a million
people died from drug overdoses. Every day, approximately 91 Americans die from an opioid
overdose. It is a proven fact that most people who are addicted suffer the most overdoses. Anyone
taking drugs can suffer an opiate overdose, especially when they take more than prescribed or if
they combine opiates with other CNS (Central Nervous System) depressants with alcohol. It's rare
for someone to die immediately from an overdose, it's usually a very slow process that takes
anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. After you administer the Naloxone, it lasts between
30–90 minutes before the overdose begins to recur. Also, Naloxone can also cause an uncomfortable
withdrawal feeling; This is because it blocks the action of opioids in the

Abortion, when the topic comes up, it is usually something people do not like to discuss. People
may tend to avoid this issue for fear of offending or angering others but it is extremely important
that the horrors of this brutal practice be addressed. During the years 1965–1996 over 515 million
babies have been murdered, this is if you add the number of chemical and surgical abortions
(www.rockforlife.org). This is what we need to understand: abortion kills and we need to know where
it came from.
The legalization of abortion started in Mississippi in the year 1966; it was used in the cases of
rape. Then other states began to expand the use of abortion. For instance, if it was the case of rape,

One way is called Partial Birth Abortion (D&X); it can kill babies up to thirty–two weeks old.
The abortionist (murderer in this case) removes all of the baby from the mother except for the
head, he then jab a pair of scissors in the back of the babies skull and then he uses a suction hose to
suck out the babies brain. Then he uses forceps to crush the babies' skull and pull the rest of the
babies' body out. Salt poisoning is also used, where salt is injected and the bay dies of convulsions
due to salt poisoning (www.rockforlife.org). If they can say this is not murder, then what is?
Abortion is not painless for the mother either. Over ninety–seven percent of women have reported
feeling pain it is often described as intense, severe, or very severe. Abortion is also not without side
effects. Complications such as bleeding, hemorrhaging, menstrual disturbances or inflammation of
the reproductive organs. Sometimes abortion can cause damage to the uterus and make the woman
infertile for the rest of her life. (Abortion some medical facts pamphlet.) Also if you are a women
and have had an abortion you increase your chances of having breast cancer by fifty percent.
Abortion has no good results in for the mother or the poor murdered baby. In the end it will always
cause physical and emotional pain.
What do religious beliefs have to do with abortion? They have everything to do with
