Essay On Mathematicians
1. Amalie Emmy Noether
Math, Not by the Numbers
Amalie Emmy Noether
By: Nolan LaFrance
Ms. Kaylon Cantrell
We have been assigned an extra credit math project to create a paper on a famous mathematician.
My first thought was what man should I choose. After all, aren't all great mathematicians men? Well,
I have decided to research and find a great female mathematician. I have selected Amalie Emmy
Noether. I have chosen Amalie Emmy Noether to show everyone that a famous mathematician can
be a lady. Today we won't do everything by the numbers, instead we will meet Ms. Amalie Emmy
Noether, famous mathematician.
Ms. Amalie Emmy Noether was born March, 23rd, 1882 in Erlangen Germany. She passed away
April 14th, 1935 in Bryn Mar Pennsylvania. Ms. Noether was German, however when the Nazi's
came to power Ms. Noether and her family were forced to leave because they were German Jews.
In the early 1900's, women were not allowed to teach or study mathematics or sciences at major
universities, they could only audit the class with...show more content...
there is a quantity that is constant. For example, if the Lagrangian is independent of the location of
the origin then the system will preserve (or conserve) linear momentum. If it is independent of the
base time then energy is conserved. If it is independent of the angle of measurement then angular
momentum is conserved.

2. Female Mathematicians Essay
Throughout history, women have been looked down upon and seen as insubordinate and incapable.
Women were never viewed as equal to men until about the 1950s. History will also tell us that men
dominated the mathematical scene and have made the biggest contributions in that field, yet this
does not seem to be the case. Women have had just as big an impact on math as men have, if not a
bigger contribution. They still continue to rock the mathematical world today. Various women such
as Hypatia from the ancient Greeks, Grace Chisholm Young from England at the turn of the century,
to Mary Fairfax Somerville from the Imperialist English, and Maria Gaetana Agnesi from Modern
Enlightenment in Italy have all contributed in major ways to the...show more content...
Hypatia's most well–known improvements to science and astronomy include her re–inventing of the
hydrometer and charting of the stars. In mathematics, she is most notable for her contributions to
working on different conic sections.Simply by dividing cones in different ways on a plane, she
was able to develop the idea of different graphs and shapes such as parabolas, ellipses, and
hyperbolas. Her understanding of the conic sections lead her to be one of the key contributors to
the invention of the astrolabe as well (Morrow 1998). Christianity became extremely popular in
Alexandria during the time when Hypatia lived there along with many riots breaking out. She
was a pagan and known for defending science against any form of religion. She was mercilessly
killed by an angry mob who accused her of religious turmoil. Although she died a horrible death of
being stripped of her skin and limbs, her legacy lived and still lives. Mathematics was thriving in
Athens, so that is where her students eagerly fled to. Although, many of her works that were stored
in the library of Alexandria were destroyed by an Arab invasion. Hypatia is an important symbol for
many generations and will always be considered to be the first woman in mathematics. The next
woman to be discussed is Grace Chisholm Young. She was a mathematician from England and
received her education at Girton College in Cambridge, England. She then continued her

3. Reflection Essay For Math
My thoughts in regards to the course up to this point are indifferent. It is math, and math will
always be difficult for me, but in regards to the instruction process, I do feel like it could be
approached in a different way. I do not feel confident that there is enough focus on processes as
there are on practice problems. Every week I think there is going to be a great explanation of
something, and every week I'm disappointed. It's just "This week is slopes, here is why we use
slopes, now solve it." There isn't a lot of in depth instruction. Or, there is the "What is a real life
slope?" I don't need to know that. I need to know the steps that I will need in the future in order to
solve for slopes, one step at a time, in numerical order....show more content...
A lot of the courses at this institution operate the same way. Perhaps it's me. Perhaps I'm better
suited for a different learning style, but I've never had any problem with learning, nor my grades
until I started with this institution. I feel that there should be more interaction, content, helpful
hints, things to keep, such as diagrams, etc. I feel like I'm paying thousands of dollars to sit
around and Google all day, and at the end of Googling answers for a few years, I will get a fancy
piece of paper. I could sit at home and Google educational concepts for free. Of the five study
strategies from my week one discussion post that I have implemented, 2 and 3 have been the
most useful so far. They have kept me going, emotionally. I have done fairly well with not
becoming discouraged and giving up completely. I have done well with trying to give it some
effort. I am not letting my negative feelings towards math keep me from at least trying. For this, I
am proud of myself. The most interesting concept that has been covered so far in my opinion has
to be breaking down equations. I just like to break things down. It is an easy lesson, but is so
important. It has such significance. The most difficult so far is the current lesson. I honestly have no
idea what is going on with the physics thing. I like physics itself, but I think the example in the
lesson was poorly presented, thus making it difficult to understand. I am not getting a newly found
feel for how much

4. Essay on Archimedes
Archimedes, a name commonly associated with the beginning of science, was an engineer and one
of the greatest mathematicians in history. His impact on modern science rests on his use of
experiment and invention to test ideas and his use mathematics to describe the basic principles of
physical phenomena.
Knowledge of the lives of ancient philosophers like Archimedes is not prevalent. We know from his
writings that he grew up and spent much of his life in Syracuse, a Sicilian port on the Ionian Sea.
His life spanned (approximately) the years 287 B.C. to 212 B.C. His father was the astronomer
Phidias and he also mentioned his friend and possibly kinsman, King Hieron II (ruler of Sicily from
about 270 B.C.). According to other authors,...show more content...
There are nine known works of Archimedes in existence. The last was discovered in a 10th century
manuscript in 1906.
On the Sphere and Cylinder
Thought to be his first book, this work shows that the surface area of a sphere is four times that
of a great circle (a line of shortest distance on a sphere). He finds a way to calculate the area of any
segment of a sphere. This book also discussing one of his more important discoveries: that the
volume of a sphere is two–thirds the volume of a circumscribed cylinder, and that the surface of the
sphere is two–thirds the surface of the cylinder. These topics brought him close to inventing calculus
and were very useful to Newton and Leibniz in the seventeenth century.
On the Measurement of the Circle
In this work Archimedes made discoveries regarding the value of pi. See Archimedes' Constant.
On the Equilibrium of Planes
In this treatise Archimedes discusses fundamental principles of mathematics using geometric
properties. He discovered important theorems regarding the center
