Trailer Analysis-The Conjuring(2013)
Structure
In most trailers the structure is similar even trailers of the horror genre. In horror movie
trailers a title page is often shown at the beginning. This title page last around 5 seconds
and explains to the audience that the following trailer they are about to watch has been
previewed and is allowed to be shown.
The title page can often be followed by the production company logo that is producing
the film. However, it is common in horror film trailer to have an introduction before
showing the logo to grab the audiences attention. In the conjuring trailer they do not
include the title page but start the trailer with the production company logos as the two
production companies are very well known which is likely to encourage the audience to
go and see the film.
• Throughout the trailers there are often captions. Captions often give the
audience more information about the plot, but in a way that does not give
the whole story away. Also, the text is often used to tell the audience about
the directors previous work. This can encourage the audience to go and see
the film because if the previous work are known for being good then people
are more likely to think that this film will be of the same standard and is
worth going to watch at the cinema. For example, in the conjuring they have
included information about the past which provides more background
information about the plot, as well as including information about he
directors previous work. As shown below:
• At the end of the most trailers, the film title will appear and
more information about the film is shown. For example, the
release date and film website so that people can research the
film to find out more information if they want too. Also, it
makes the audience aware of when the film is available to see
in cinemas. The Conjuring trailer have edited in these
conventions as part of the trailer:
Continuity Editing
• Continuity editing is used editors who create film trailers. Continuity is achieved by
cutting and helps to emphasise the transition of time and space. It has been used in
The Conjuring, as the trailer shows goes from showing Ed and Lorraine Warren being
paranormal researchers, to showing past images of the Warrens to transitioning into
them now giving a lecture to a class of students. The editing used emphasis the fact
that rime has passed without actually telling the audience.
Short and Long Takes
At the beginning of the trailer, the shots are often long and slow using slow transitions
because it shows the location/setting for the film and is usually when the characters
are introduced to the audience.
Throughout the trailer the shot lengths can vary depending on the horror moments
that are being shown. Short takes often are used towards the end of the trailer, they
are used because it only shows snippets of action to the audience which can leave
them feeling intrigued to what actually happens in the plot/story. However, the shot
usually returns to being fairly long before the final scare at the every end of the trailer
because this builds tension. For example, In the conjuring this combination of short
and long takes have been used. At the very end of the trailer there is a long take of the
little girl talking to Lorraine Warren before the final scare.
Transitions
• In horror trailers, the transitions are used effectively depending on the
where the shot is in the trailer. For example, at the beginning the transitions
are usually slow and smooth because usually normality is being shown
therefore there is no need for fast transitions and cuts. Whereas, when the
pace increases and the cuts of each shot become quicker the transitions are
faster and more dramatic. In horror trailers it is common for shots to cut to
black screens, as it leaves the audience thinking of what happens next and
some scenes where violence is implied, the audience are left feeling
worried due to them not knowing the fate of the protagonist character.
Pace
• Slow motion/pace is be used in horror film trailers to help build tension.
The use of slow pace is likely to have an impact on the audience because it
leaves them feeling on edge and anxious about what is going to happen
next.
• Whereas towards the end of horror trailers the pace increases, the shots
are ended so that they only appear for a 1 or 2 seconds. This makes this
section of the trailer very dramatic and tense and includes the implied
violence in the film.

Editing Analysis

  • 2. Structure In most trailers the structure is similar even trailers of the horror genre. In horror movie trailers a title page is often shown at the beginning. This title page last around 5 seconds and explains to the audience that the following trailer they are about to watch has been previewed and is allowed to be shown. The title page can often be followed by the production company logo that is producing the film. However, it is common in horror film trailer to have an introduction before showing the logo to grab the audiences attention. In the conjuring trailer they do not include the title page but start the trailer with the production company logos as the two production companies are very well known which is likely to encourage the audience to go and see the film.
  • 3. • Throughout the trailers there are often captions. Captions often give the audience more information about the plot, but in a way that does not give the whole story away. Also, the text is often used to tell the audience about the directors previous work. This can encourage the audience to go and see the film because if the previous work are known for being good then people are more likely to think that this film will be of the same standard and is worth going to watch at the cinema. For example, in the conjuring they have included information about the past which provides more background information about the plot, as well as including information about he directors previous work. As shown below:
  • 4. • At the end of the most trailers, the film title will appear and more information about the film is shown. For example, the release date and film website so that people can research the film to find out more information if they want too. Also, it makes the audience aware of when the film is available to see in cinemas. The Conjuring trailer have edited in these conventions as part of the trailer:
  • 5. Continuity Editing • Continuity editing is used editors who create film trailers. Continuity is achieved by cutting and helps to emphasise the transition of time and space. It has been used in The Conjuring, as the trailer shows goes from showing Ed and Lorraine Warren being paranormal researchers, to showing past images of the Warrens to transitioning into them now giving a lecture to a class of students. The editing used emphasis the fact that rime has passed without actually telling the audience.
  • 6. Short and Long Takes At the beginning of the trailer, the shots are often long and slow using slow transitions because it shows the location/setting for the film and is usually when the characters are introduced to the audience. Throughout the trailer the shot lengths can vary depending on the horror moments that are being shown. Short takes often are used towards the end of the trailer, they are used because it only shows snippets of action to the audience which can leave them feeling intrigued to what actually happens in the plot/story. However, the shot usually returns to being fairly long before the final scare at the every end of the trailer because this builds tension. For example, In the conjuring this combination of short and long takes have been used. At the very end of the trailer there is a long take of the little girl talking to Lorraine Warren before the final scare.
  • 7. Transitions • In horror trailers, the transitions are used effectively depending on the where the shot is in the trailer. For example, at the beginning the transitions are usually slow and smooth because usually normality is being shown therefore there is no need for fast transitions and cuts. Whereas, when the pace increases and the cuts of each shot become quicker the transitions are faster and more dramatic. In horror trailers it is common for shots to cut to black screens, as it leaves the audience thinking of what happens next and some scenes where violence is implied, the audience are left feeling worried due to them not knowing the fate of the protagonist character.
  • 8. Pace • Slow motion/pace is be used in horror film trailers to help build tension. The use of slow pace is likely to have an impact on the audience because it leaves them feeling on edge and anxious about what is going to happen next. • Whereas towards the end of horror trailers the pace increases, the shots are ended so that they only appear for a 1 or 2 seconds. This makes this section of the trailer very dramatic and tense and includes the implied violence in the film.
