The document provides analysis of three film scenes through discussion of techniques used by the directors:
1) The bodyguard scene from The Bodyguard uses shots from different angles and slow motion to build tension as the bodyguard protects the lead actress from an assassination attempt.
2) The ending scene of Hush uses camera movements, lighting, sound, and acting to depict an intense fight between the deaf female lead and her attacker.
3) The dancing scene in Dirty Dancing effectively uses shots from different angles, camera movements, and color to show the lead character's reaction to experienced dancers and build her connection with the male lead.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. The Bodyguard
In the beginning of the Bodyguard clip the first medium shot of Whitney Houston is of her standing up to collect her Oscar award and then the
camera changes position to the bodyguard. The camera then zooms into his anxious face which then becomes a point of view shot of the
contrast of him looking at her therefore that creates tension meaning he is concerned about her.
After that there is a long and establishing shot of the theatre and crowd cheering, which establishes the context of the shot. Furthermore there is
a point of view shot of the shooter looking at her and later there is an OTS and a close up of the gun that is connected to the camera he is
holding creating an intense scenery. Afterwards there is a close up of the shooter holding the gun and pointing her with the laser beam, which
then the shot changes into a close up of her face showing the red beam creating tension. Next there is a medium shot of the bodyguard walking
towards the stage because he is concerned, it becomes a close up shot of his confused face reminding us that something awful is about to
happen because he suddenly notices the shooter pointing towards her.
The next shot was a medium a shot of the bodyguard taking out a gun from his inside pocket, then changes into a point of view shot of her
walking up the stairs but then a camera flash blocks his sight. The scene turns into slow motion, which creates tension because we can see
every detail of what is happening. The slow motion shot of him running towards her and then a medium shot of him spreading his arms to save
her., letting us know that the shooter is going to try to shoot her but the bodyguard is willing to take the bullet. In addition, there is a close up of
her shocking face because she notices that he is running towards her.
Following that, there is an extreme slow motion close up of the shooter firing the gun and at the same time the bodyguard and Whitney fall to the
ground, making us hope that the bullet hits the bodyguard and not her. After this there are a lot eye level shots of the crowd screaming and
looking towards the stage. Next there is a close up of the bodyguard face looking straight at the shooter and points his gun at him, creating
tension because we start to doubt if he is actually going to shoot him. Then there is a medium shot of him and her on the stage with other people
around them and after there is an OTS showing that Whitney is looking at him, which creates empathy for her. Next there is a low angle shot of
her face looking at him while he dies.
To end the scene, there was a point of view shot of another guy who was with her at the beginning looking at her Oscar card and then a medium
shot of his smiling reaction when he sees her name on it, but then sees the blood and tries to wipe it off with a handkerchief which creates a
warm feeling because he is happy for her but still something terrible happened.
3. Hush: ending scene
The clip of the ending scene of the movie Hush shows many different techniques to show variation of camera movements, mise en scene, and
sound to the viewers.
The director of Hush uses mise en scene to evoke emotions that permeate the whole movie. The main character is a woman named Maddie,
who is a writer and also deaf, she gets attacked by a masked killer in the night. The studio is taken place in a cozy home, shae has many props
throughout the scene such as the flashing alarm, laptop, knives, repellent and a win opener so that she is able to defend herself from the
attacker. The attacker also has props during this scene like the metal stick he uses to slam the windows and a knife. Their costumes are very
different, she is wearing her pajamas and he is wearing long blue trousers, grey and black jacket with a hood and gloves, in this scene he
doesn't wear his mask because she already knows who he is, these costumes fit their character because she's at home and he is trying to
murder her without leaving any marks of evidence. The lighting in this scene is low key, which is mostly used in thrillers because it compromises
the lighting pattern of chiaroscuro in the frame. Lastly her acting is of high quality because she really expresses her emotions powerfully with her
facial expression because she doesn't speak. Although his acting is very evil and his facial expressions really show the hate he has for her, also
by the way he walks and the way he speaks to her with a murderous tonal of voice.
The camera movements the director uses are very specific for the moment and mood. The beginning of the scene starts with a close up of the
window with bloody writing on it saying “coward”, this intenses the movement that they will have between them, then suddenly the camera
moves on to a medium shot of him looking at her and then walking away. After that a tracking movement is used of him holding the metal stick
walking towards the house again. The camera moves back to Maddie with her looking at her laptop, then there’s an extreme close up of what
she’s typing, which was a list explaining how the murderer looked like, to her parents and Max, but the camera movement becomes 1 to 2 shot
of him slamming the window and her typing, this creates tension because the viewer doesn’t know if shes gonna stay alive or if he is able to
break the window but at the same time the viewer knows that she can’t hear anything. The director uses a push movement when Maddie is in
the bathroom to intensify the movement and to show us that she is losing a lot of blood . At the same time when the movement becomes a point
of view of her looking at the door, the frame becomes blurry emphasising her eyesight. It becomes a close up of her face but showing the back
of the room because it shows the viewer the glass braking creating tension because she can’t hear it brake and she is already struggling to see
properly. When the attacker is inside the bathroom and tries to kill her, she realizes and while she turns back to stab him it turns into slow
motion, this really creates stress for the viewer because they don’t know if her reaction was quick enough to stab him first rather than him.
4. When they start fighting the camera is hand held and it’s starts to move a lot, which adds realism in the shot. Maddie has showed him that
she gives up and in that moment the director chose to add pictures of her when she was young to gradually getting older and this makes the
viewer think she actually gave up and was going to die. At the end of the scene the director shows the viewer another push movement in to
her face, which is relieved because she won the battle creating a stress relief for us and hope that she will be fine.
In this scene there is a lot of non diegetic sound and diegetic sound but only the attacker can hear and the viewer, to add there is also not a
lot of dialogue. The non diegetic sound used in the beginning is making the viewer feel stress because the drum sound creates that but the
music also sounds like there’s going to be success at the end of it all. When Maddie goes to the bathroom the music slowly turns into silence
to create tension when the attacker is behind and talking to her. The attacker gets stabbed by Maddie and that’s when the music starts
playing again from soft to loud also emphasising when she starts to stand up again and walk. This music is demonic like because that is
when the attacker stands up and tries to kill her again creating stress for the viewer. When she gets strangled by the attacker there is no
music in the background, all that the viewer can hear, is her heart beat gradually beating slower creating uncertainty if she will die or not but
then when Maddie stabs her attacker in his throat, the sound of the alarm is on again with no music in the background which suggests that
Maddie is safe and making the viewer feel relieved. The scene ends with peaceful music creating tranquility for the viewer.
To conclude, the director of the clip has used a lot of different techniques to show the viewers different feelings and moods with the right
sound and specific angles to create emotion.
5. Dirty Dancing
In Dirty Dancing the director really shows his specific techniques, such as camera angles, camera movements, colour movements, colour
symbolism, costume, sound, hair and lighting throughout the scene.
The camera angles that the director uses really show the different moods and reactions of the actors and also shows the environment of the
scene. In the beginning the director shows us the establishing shot of the dancing room with ´Baby´ and her friend entering the roo, also
showing a close up of her reaction of the way the other people are dancing. This shows the viewer that ´Baby´ is not experienced and that
she has never been to a place like this before. The director presents many 2 shots of ´Baby´ and her friend looking at the public, but the
important part of the scene is when the two professional dancers make a big entrance and the rest make space for them to dance. This point
of view shot really creates excitement for the viewer because it makes the viewer doubt if something interesting is going to happen between
Baby and Johnny, like if they end up dancing.
The camera movement in the scene evokes the connection between the professional dancers and the rest. The director uses a tracking
movement while they dance to show the viewer that they love dancing and that they love dancing and that they feel the music. Another
tracking movement is when Johnny pulls Baby into the crowd to start dancing to emphasise the beginning of her feelings for him. Also when
the professional dancers at first come in, the director also uses a tracking shot of them coming into the crowd to really express that they are
the best and the popular ones. The director also uses a pan movement, moving from Baby's face to Johnny while he was dancing provoking
her admiration of him and showing that she is jealous that she can't dance as good as Johnny´s friend.
The colour symbolism is very specifically used in this scene because it creates the atmosphere, the connection of the crowd and most
importantly the vibe between Johnny and Baby. The colour which is mostly used is red because it creates a `love` like atmosphere, which
also creates Johnny's and Baby`s dancing more intimate. Other warm colours like purple and orange lights are also used to add they `love`
like atmosphere by creating a deep connection between the dancers.
The costume and hair that the director chose for the different actors, express what type of person they are in the movie. The theme is 80´s. In
Babys case her costume in this scene shows the viewer that she is incongruous in the setting and it also reflects her youth and her wealthy
background. At the end she takes her
