Basic Food Groups All foods are classified into five different groups:    vegetable and fruits dairy products meat, eggs, and fish    grains    fats and sugar
Fruits Any fruit or 100% fruit juice counts as part of the fruit group. Fruits may be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried, and may be whole, cut-up, or pureed.
Vegetables Vegetables are part of a the plant, such as the stem, root, or flower.  They may be eaten fresh, frozen, canned, or as juice.
Milk Group All fluid milk products and many foods made from milk are considered part of this food group.
Grain Group Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product. The grain group includes bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas and grits.
Meat Group All foods made from meat, poultry, fish, dry beans or peas, eggs, nuts, and seeds are part of this group.
Nutrients Our body requires carbohydrates, proteins, fats, enzymes, vitamins and minerals for a healthy growth. A variety of food is the only way to get the nutrients our body needs to be healthy.
Food Guide Pyramid Eat foods from each color stripe every day.  Choose more healthy foods from the bottom of each group. Eat more foods from the groups with wider stripes. Be physically active everyday.
Eat more fruits and vegetables! Eat a variety of foods every day. A balanced diet is one that includes all the food groups.
