ABOUT THE BOOK
The Life sciences online assessments book is a compilation of different online
assessment tools. These tools can be used by teachers to make their work more
convenient. They are a substitution of the traditional assessment methods. The tools
used in the book are currently being used by most teachers especially those in the
Information Communication Technology (ICT) subjects. Teachers can easily use the
tools, as well as learners since there is no extensive training required in order to be able
to use or participate in using the tools. The book can be accessible to anyone via the
connection of the internet on their gadgets.
Structure of the book
The book has two chapters viz. Transport in Animals and Environmental Studies. Each
chapter consist of a chapter introduction, chapter outcomes, chapter summary and
assessments, which are baseline, formative, and summative. Some content is provided
in the book and in the form of links for extra notes. I also included some links to video
clips. Summative assessments are at the end of each chapter and then, the formative
assessments have their making rubrics to guide the participants.
1
Chapter One
Transport in Animals
CHAPTER INTRODUCTION
The cells of all organisms require energy for their survival. This energy comes from the
food which needs to undergo, cellular respiration to release energy. During cellular
respiration carbon dioxide is also released and oxygen is required. As a result of other
metabolic activities cells give off excretory wastes. Therefore, there must be a way for
2
the cells to receive food and oxygen and to get rid of carbon dioxide and other excretory
wastes.
CHAPTER OUTCOMES
Transport in Animals
At the end of this chapter, learners should be able to:-
 Define the Circulatory system.
 Distinguish between the open and the closed blood system.
 Distinguish between the pulmonary and the systemic circuits.
 Acquire knowledge about the heart and associated blood vessels.
 Illustrate a blood flow through the heart.
 Know the external structure of the heart.
 Know about different cardiovascular diseases.
CHAPTER SUMMARY
Circulatory systems in animals – the pumping action of the heart that puts the blood
under pressure, forcing it through its blood vessels and then back again to the heart.
1. Two types.
 Open circulatory system- The circulatory fluid (Hemolymph) is the same as
the interstitial tissue fluid.
 Closed circulatory system- Circulate blood entirely within vessels.
2. Double circulation.
 Pulmonary circuit- The heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs and
oxygenated blood back to the heart.
 Systemic circuit- The heart pumps oxygenated blood to the body cells and
deoxygenated blood back to the heart.
3. The heart and the blood vessels involved in the blood circulation.
 Veins- transport deoxygenated blood except for the pulmonary veins.
 Arteries- transport oxygenated blood except for the pulmonary arteries.
 Capillaries- connect arteries and veins.
4. The blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body, and from the body back to the
heart.

Chapter Two
Environmental Studies
CHAPTER INTRODUCTION
Environmental studies are a multidisciplinary academic field which systemically studies
human interaction with the environment. It is a broad field of study that both living and
non-living organisms. Living organisms can exist for up to about eight kilometres below
the earth’s surface and for about eight kilometres above the earth’s surface. This is
called the biosphere.
Baseline assessment
*This assessment is specific for section 1 of the chapter.
Before the beginning of the
chapter, let us engage in the
following assessment task.

CHAPTER OUTCOMES
Section 1 - Biosphere, Biomes and Ecosystem
At the end of this section, learners should be able to:-
 Define what is a biosphere, biome and ecosystem.
 List and define components of the biosphere.
 List all the biomes found in the Southern Africa.
 Distinguish the biomes by their characteristics.
 Provide examples of ecosystems and ecotourism.
Section 2 – Biotic and Abiotic Factors
At the end of this section, learners should be able to:-
 Define the term Biotic and Abiotic factors.
 Give examples of biotic and abiotic factors.
 Explain the relationship between the biotic and abiotic factors.
Section 3 – Energy flow and Nutrient Recycle
At the end of this section, learners should be able to:-
 Define what is food chain, food web and food pyramids.
 Construct their food chains and food web.
 Recall the different nutrient cycles.
CHAPTER SUMMARY
1. The Biosphere
- The biosphere is the portion of the Earth in which living organisms are found.
2. Biomes
- Different parts of the Earth have different climates. Some regions may be very hot and
dry for most part of the year. Another region may be cold and covered with snow. Still
others might be hot and rainy.
7
3. Biomes found in the Southern Africa
* More on biomes (video) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fb8143ndo8
4. Ecosystems
- Any well- define area in which there is a close interaction between the plants, animals
and their environment.
5. Abiotic and Biotic Factors i.e. non-living and living factors.
-Abiotic Factors
 Climatic
 Edaphic
 Physiographic
-Biotic Factors
 Producers (plants)
 Consumers (humans)
 Decomposers ( micro-organisms)

6. Energy Flow and Nutrient Cycles.
* This is an interesting video showing the flow of energy in the ecosystem -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cd1M9xD482s
 Food chain – path taken by energy as it flows directly from one organism to
another.
 Food web – the path taken by energy and food is more complicated than
illustrated in a food chain.
7. Nutrient Recycling.
* watch the explanation of the following cycles here -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOfMmPGMqoA
 Water Cycle
 Carbon Cycle
 Nitrogen Cycle

  • 9. 5 Chapter Two Environmental Studies CHAPTER INTRODUCTION Environmental studies are a multidisciplinary academic field which systemically studies human interaction with the environment. It is a broad field of study that both living and non-living organisms. Living organisms can exist for up to about eight kilometres below the earth’s surface and for about eight kilometres above the earth’s surface. This is called the biosphere. Baseline assessment *This assessment is specific for section 1 of the chapter. Before the beginning of the chapter, let us engage in the following assessment task. https://todaysmeet.co m/lifesciences10A
  • 10. 6 CHAPTER OUTCOMES Section 1 - Biosphere, Biomes and Ecosystem At the end of this section, learners should be able to:-  Define what is a biosphere, biome and ecosystem.  List and define components of the biosphere.  List all the biomes found in the Southern Africa.  Distinguish the biomes by their characteristics.  Provide examples of ecosystems and ecotourism. Section 2 – Biotic and Abiotic Factors At the end of this section, learners should be able to:-  Define the term Biotic and Abiotic factors.  Give examples of biotic and abiotic factors.  Explain the relationship between the biotic and abiotic factors. Section 3 – Energy flow and Nutrient Recycle At the end of this section, learners should be able to:-  Define what is food chain, food web and food pyramids.  Construct their food chains and food web.  Recall the different nutrient cycles. CHAPTER SUMMARY 1. The Biosphere - The biosphere is the portion of the Earth in which living organisms are found. 2. Biomes - Different parts of the Earth have different climates. Some regions may be very hot and dry for most part of the year. Another region may be cold and covered with snow. Still others might be hot and rainy.
  • 11. 7 3. Biomes found in the Southern Africa * More on biomes (video) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fb8143ndo8 4. Ecosystems - Any well- define area in which there is a close interaction between the plants, animals and their environment. 5. Abiotic and Biotic Factors i.e. non-living and living factors. -Abiotic Factors  Climatic  Edaphic  Physiographic -Biotic Factors  Producers (plants)  Consumers (humans)  Decomposers ( micro-organisms)

Energy Flow and Nutrient Cycles. * This is an interesting video showing the flow of energy in the ecosystem - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cd1M9xD482s  Food chain – path taken by energy as it flows directly from one organism to another.  Food web – the path taken by energy and food is more complicated than illustrated in a food chain. 7. Nutrient Recycling. * watch the explanation of the following cycles here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOfMmPGMqoA  Water Cycle  Carbon Cycle  Nitrogen Cycle  Oxygen Cycle As you have studied about the Biotic and Abiotic factors in the Ecosystem, conduct the following investigation. *Make sure that you follow the instructions as stated. https://padlet.com/nqobil embaten/szzdclvuvoyg/ wish/129413825
