Easter
in Great Britain
Easter
In the UK Easter is one of the
major Christian festivals of the
year. In Britain Easter occurs at a
different time each year. It is
observed on the first Sunday after
the first full moon following the
first day of spring in the Northern
Hemisphere. This means that the
festival can occur on any Sunday
between March 22 and April 25.
Easter baskets
It's hard to imagine Easter without
Easter baskets. Traditionally, these
are filled with candy treats such as
chocolates and jelly beans, usually in
the shape of an egg. There may also
be hollow plastic eggs with coins or
other treats inside.
Easter eggs
At Easter the British celebrate the
idea of the new birth by giving each
other chocolate Easter eggs, which
are opened and eaten on Easter
Sunday.
Easter cakes
On Good Friday bakers sell hot
cross buns, which are toasted and
eaten with butter. These small,
lightly sweet yeast buns contain
raisins or currants and sometimes
chopped candied fruit.
Easter game "Egg rolling"
Egg rolling is a traditional Easter pastime. It
consists of rolling coloured, hard-boiled eggs
down a slope until they are cracked and broken
after which they are eaten by their owners.
