Maslenitsa, also known as Shrovetide, is a Russian folk festival held during the last week before Great Lent. It was traditionally a time to remember the dead, but evolved into a joyous celebration marked by eating blini pancakes, sleigh rides, and costumes. Each day of Maslenitsa had its own rituals, from welcoming Winter on Monday to saying farewell and burning Winter's effigy on the last day before the fasting period of Great Lent began on Clean Monday.
