The document describes a replication study that measured the user experience of different adaptive user interfaces using EEG brain activity data. The study aimed to analyze 20 different adaptive graphical menus to compare their influence on cognitive load, engagement, memorization, and attraction. 40 master's students participated in the within-subjects study, using each of the 20 menus in random order. EEG data was analyzed to measure the dependent variables, and questionnaires assessed perceived cognitive load and attraction. Statistical tests found significant differences between menus for all dependent variables, suggesting menu type influences user experience metrics.

This month we'll be hearing from Dr. Isa Jahnke, Director of the User Experience and Learning Design Lab at the University of Missouri. She will be discussing usability, user experience, and how to get the most out of focus groups and testing nights for the CoMO game development community.

The purpose of this research proposal is to identify organizational principles for the development of online learning curriculum in higher education. This study will address the following research questions: Can educational psychology learning theories (such as cognitive load theory) be used to inform usability-testing methods? Can usability-testing methods be used to discover basic principles of online learning curricular organization? Are there basic principles of online learning curricular organization that can improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction of learning in online environments? While there are many theoretical directions one could take to examine the interface of instructional design and technology, this research proposal will use the lens of the cognitive load theory. This study will use the cognitive walkthrough method as established by usability testing standards. Cognitive walkthroughs use an explicitly detailed procedure to simulate a user’s problem solving process at each step through the dialogue, checking if the simulated user’s goals and memory content can be assumed to lead to the next correct action. Participants will be asked to complete a series of tasks in an online learning environment formulated to compare different methods of organization. This study has the potential to make significant contributions to the field of educational psychology and online education by providing substantive empirical data that sheds light on potential principles that improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction of Web-based education.

CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

• Baseline experiment results are confirmed with a more homogeneous group of users
• Effect size shows that these results could be generalised to other contexts
• Objective assessment of UX (cognitive load and attraction) through EEG signals
• Trends:
• Different font styles or structures uncertainty on UX
• Different colour and temporal variance predictable user reaction
• Menus that are preferred by the users do not necessarily perform well
• Future work:
• Experiments with more UI elements
• Provide recommendations for UI developers on the dimensions more relevant for
UX
• How to adapt UI to better fit with user needs in different contexts
