•The United Nations Conference on Environment and
Development (UNCED), also known as the Rio de
Janeiro Earth Summit , Rio Summit, Rio Conference
and Earth Summit, World summit on sustainable
development
• A major United National Conference held in Rio de
Janeiro from 3 to 14 June 1992.

4.  Systematic scrutiny (examine) of patterns of production – particularly
the production of toxic components, such as lead in gasoline, or
poisonous waste including radioactive chemicals
 Alternative sources of energy to replace the use of fossil fuels which
are linked to global climate change
 New reliance on public transportation systems in order to reduce

5. Three agreements and two legally binding conventions were agreed at the 1992
Earth Summit.
Agreements
1 - Agenda 21 – a wide-ranging comprehensive action plan for achieving
sustainable development worldwide.
2 - Rio Declaration on the environment and development – a series of principles
defining the rights and responsibilities of states.
3 - Statement of forest principles – a set of principles to underlie the sustainable
management of forests worldwide.
Conventions (ways to do)
1 - The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC) – to prevent global climate change. The Kyoto Protocol,
the global agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions, was
developed as part of this Convention.
2 - The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) – to prevent the
eradication of the diversity of biological species

15.  An international environment treaty negotiated(bring out by
discussion) at the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro from 3
to 14 June 1992
 The objective of the treaty is to “stabilize greenhouse gas
concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent
dangerous interference with the climate system”.
 The UNFCC was adopted on 9 may 1992, and opened for
signature on 4 June 1992
 On 12 June 1992, 154 nations signed the UNFCCC
 The treaty itself set no binding limits on greenhouse gas
emissions for individual countries. In that sense, the treaty is
considered legally non-binding
 Instead, the treaty provides a framework for negotiating
specific international treaties ( called “protocols”) that may set
binding limits on greenhouse gases.
 The 20th COP took place in Peru in 2014.
