Writing a Philosophy paper
Each topic I give you will ask you to “explain and evaluate” a position or idea or argument. There are four elements you must address in your essay (these four will be the elements I am grading).
I will give you a score of 0-5 for each of these four elements. I will then add the scores together to calculate your grade on the essay. If you score a perfect “5” on each element the maximum total score would be 20.
The score can be converted into a letter grade:

I provide the scale for each element below. With each scale I have included specific directions that will help you score higher on that element. The bold print is what I will use to determine your score. I hope that by reading this you will feel confident that you know how to organize and write the essay.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

- 1. Each student will be required to write a formal letter to an elected official regarding a specific public policy issue. The letter should 1- page in length, discuss a single issue, outline the student’s position on that issue, and formally request the position of the elected official on the issue The official contacted is clearly the appropriate official for the issue written about. The official contacted is one of multiple officials who could be contacted about the issue. The official written is not the appropriate official to contact about the issue in the letter. Student clearly articulate a well-reasoned position on the issue, supported with some facts or experiences. The student articulates a position on the issue but fails to provide a rationale or evidence to support that position. The student fails to explain or support their position on the issue. Student incorporates a relevant personal experience to highlight the importance of the issue or their position on the issue. Or they incorporate some knowledge about the issue they have gained. The student incorporates some information about the issue but it is not based on personal experience or knowledge gained. The student incorporates no personal experience or knowledge to support their position. Formal language is used throughout the letter. No slang or short-hand terminology is used. The student uses a minimum (less than 3 times) amount of slang or short-hand terminology in the letter. Slang and short-hand terminology are used throughout the letter. The student clearly requests a response from the elected official
- 2. regarding the issue in their letter. The student indicates a reply is desired, but does not specifically request one. No response is requested and the letter does not imply one is desired.
