Optimal Expenditure and Benefit Cost Based Location, Size and Type of DGs in ...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
The economic issue is an essential element to determine whether DG should be installed or not. This work presents the economical approach for multi-type DGs placement in microgrid systems with more comprehensive overview from DG’s owner perspective. Adaptive Real Coded GA (ARC-GA) with replacement process is developed to determine the location, type, and rating of DGs so as the maximum profit is achieved. The objectives of this paper are maximizing benefit cost and minimizing expenditure cost. All objectives are optimized while maintaining the bus voltage at the acceptable range and the DGs penetration levels are below of the DGs capacities.The proposed method is applied on the 33 bus microgrids systems using conventional and renewable DG technology, namely Photovoltaic (PV), Wind Turbine (WT), Micro Turbine (MT) and Gas Turbine (GT). The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In this paper, we will show our recently development of a software algorithm/package which can help us select the more eco-efficient control configuration. Nowadays, the eco-efficiency of all industrial processes/plants has become more and more important; engineers need to find a way to integrate control loop configuration and measurements of eco-efficiency. The exergy eco-efficiency factor; a new measure of eco-efficiency for control loop configuration has been developed. This software algorithm/package will combine a commercial simulator, VMGSim, and Excel together to calculate the exergy eco-efficiency factor.

This paper discusses economic load dispatch Problem is modeled with nonconvex functions. These are problem are not solvable using a convex optimization techniques. So there is a need for using a heuristic method. Among such methods Teaching and Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) is a recently known algorithm and showed promising results. This paper utilized this algorithm to provide load dispatch solutions. Comparisons of this solution with other standard algorithms like Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Differential Evolution (DE) and Harmony Search Algorithm (HSA). This proposed algorithm is applied to solve the load dispatch problem for 6 unit and 10 unit test systems along with the other algorithms. This comparisional investigation explored various merits of TLBO with respect to PSO, DE, and HAS in the field economic load dispatch.
A Simple Approach for Optimal Generation Scheduling to Maximize GENCOs Profit...IJAPEJOURNAL
In this paper an attempt has been made to solve the profit based unit commitment problem (PBUC) using pre-prepared power demand (PPD) table with an artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm. The PPD-ABC algorithm appears to be a robust and reliable optimization algorithm for the solution of PBUC problem. The profit based unit commitment problem is considered as a stochastic optimization problem in which the objective is to maximize their own profit and the decisions are needed to satisfy the standard operating constraints. The PBUC problem is solved by the proposed methodology in two stages. In the first step, the unit commitment scheduling is performed by considering the pre-prepared power demand (PPD) table and then the problem of fuel cost and revenue function is solved using ABC Algorithm. The PPD table suggests the operator to decide the units to be put into generation there by reducing the complexity of the problem. The proposed approach is demonstrated on 10 units 24 hour and 50 units 24 hour test systems and numerical results are tabulated. Simulation result shows that this approach effectively maximizes the GENCO’s profit than those obtained by other optimizing methods.

Improved particle swarm optimization algorithms for economic load dispatch co...IJECEIAES
Economic load dispatch problem under the competitive electric market (ELDCEM) is becoming a hot problem that receives a big interest from researchers. A lot of measures are proposed to deal with the problem. In this paper, three versions of PSO method such as conventional particle swarm optimization (PSO), PSO with inertia weight (IWPSO) and PSO with constriction factor (CFPSO) are applied for handling ELDCEM problem. The core duty of the PSO methods is to determine the most optimal power output of generators to obtain total profit as much as possible for generation companies without violation of constraints. These methods are tested on three and ten-unit systems considering payment model for power delivered and different constraints. Results obtained from the PSO methods are compared with each other to evaluate the effectiveness and robustness. As results, IWPSO method is superior to other methods. Besides, comparing the PSO methods with other reported methods also gives a conclusion that IWPSO method is a very strong tool for solving ELDCEM problem because it can obtain the highest profit, fast converge speed and simulation time.

emissions at fossil-fuel plants, optimal release of water at hydro power plants etc. and aim at improving the efficiency of the power system. In this research work, consideration will be given to two aspects of the optimal system operation, emissions and economy of operation, also known as economic dispatch. Generally the heuristic methods like Genetic algorithm, Simulated annealing, Particle Swarm Optimization, Ant Colony techniques and their various modifications have shown marked improvement in the addressing of the economic dispatch problem as well as the combined economic and emission dispatch problem. However there is scope of improvement of the solution to the combined economic and emission dispatch problems, in terms of better convergence, lower losses, faster computation times, reduced fuel costs and reduced emissions. It is worthy of notice that Artificial Bee Colony Method applied in the present work, yielded superior solutions than the heuristic and traditional optimization techniques.

ENERGY EFFICIENT VIRTUAL MACHINE ASSIGNMENT BASED ON ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND R...IAEME Publication
Cloud Computing is an internet based computing which makes and different types of services available to users. For customers based on their required services over the internet virtualized resources are provided. The fast growth of cloud resources with customers demand increases the energy consumption results in carbon dioxide emission. However, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission in cloud data centre have massive impact on global environment triggering intense research in this area. To minimize the energy consumption in this paper we propose VM Assignment scheduling algorithm, it is based energy consumption and balancing the resource utilization. we consider both the VM and host energy consumption and classify the VMs based the resource usage and schedule them to balance the resources utilization among the hosts in the cloud data centre which leads to better energy efficiency and reduces the heat generation. The effectiveness of the proposed technique has been verified by simulating on CloudSim. Experimental results confirm that the technique proposed here can significantly reduce energy consumption in cloud.
Mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP)-based bandwidth utility function ...IJECEIAES
The development of the internet in this era of globalization has increased fast. The need for internet becomes unlimited. Utility functions as one of measurements in internet usage, were usually associated with a level of satisfaction of users for the use of information services used. There are three internet pricing schemes used, that are flat fee, usage based and two-part tariff schemes by using one of the utility function which is Bandwidth Diminished with Increasing Bandwidth with monitoring cost and marginal cost. Internet pricing scheme will be solved by LINGO 13.0 in form of non-linear optimization problems to get optimal solution. The optimal solution is obtained using the either usage-based pricing scheme model or two-part tariff pricing scheme model for each services offered, if the comparison is with flat-fee pricing scheme. It is the best way for provider to offer network based on usage based scheme. The results show that by applying two part tariff scheme, the providers can maximize its revenue either for homogeneous or heterogeneous consumers.

The paper also introduces a novel visualization approach for the understanding and the interpretation of reference sets, the set of efficient wind turbines that should be taken as benchmark by inefficient ones.

Energy consumption in cloud computing occur due to the unreasonable way in which tasks are scheduled. Hence, energy efficient task scheduling solutions are required to attain variable resource management, live migration, minimal virtual machine design, overall system efficiency, reduction in operating costs, increasing system reliability, and prompting environmental protection with minimal performance overhead. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the energy efficient techniques and approaches and proposes the energy aware resource utilization framework to control traffic in cloud networks and overloads.

Cloud Computing is an internet based computing which makes and different types of services available to users. For customers based on their required services over the internet virtualized resources are provided. The fast growth of cloud resources with customers demand increases the energy consumption results in carbon dioxide emission. However, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission in cloud data centre have massive impact on global environment triggering intense research in this area. To minimize the energy consumption in this paper we propose VM Assignment scheduling algorithm, it is based energy consumption and balancing the resource utilization. we consider both the VM and host energy consumption and classify the VMs based the resource usage and schedule them to balance the resources utilization among the hosts in the cloud data centre which leads to better energy efficiency and reduces the heat generation. The effectiveness of the proposed technique has been verified by simulating on CloudSim. Experimental results confirm that the technique proposed here can significantly reduce energy consumption in cloud.
Mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP)-based bandwidth utility function ...IJECEIAES
The development of the internet in this era of globalization has increased fast. The need for internet becomes unlimited. Utility functions as one of measurements in internet usage, were usually associated with a level of satisfaction of users for the use of information services used. There are three internet pricing schemes used, that are flat fee, usage based and two-part tariff schemes by using one of the utility function which is Bandwidth Diminished with Increasing Bandwidth with monitoring cost and marginal cost. Internet pricing scheme will be solved by LINGO 13.0 in form of non-linear optimization problems to get optimal solution. The optimal solution is obtained using the either usage-based pricing scheme model or two-part tariff pricing scheme model for each services offered, if the comparison is with flat-fee pricing scheme. It is the best way for provider to offer network based on usage based scheme. The results show that by applying two part tariff scheme, the providers can maximize its revenue either for homogeneous or heterogeneous consumers.

This paper presents a data-centric analysis of commercial on-shore wind turbines and provides actionable insights through analytical benchmarking through Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), visual data analysis, and statistical hypothesis testing. The paper also introduces a novel visualization approach for the understanding and the interpretation of reference sets, the set of efficient wind turbines that should be taken as benchmark by inefficient ones.

Energy Evaluation and Processing Cost Reduction in Agudu Maize Processing Ind...Dr. Amarjeet Singh
This study evaluated energy consumption by Agudu Farms Limited (AFL) that processes maize and cassava into flour for human consumption. The objectives of study included to determine energy contribution to processing cost, to minimize the processing cost and to propose a new selling price per unit of sale of the product. The study materials included; a multi-meter, stopwatch, electrical appliances’ nameplates and bills, fuel purchased receipts, and production records. Data was collected through detailed energy audits and measurements of present electricity consumption. This data was converted into energy intensities, rates and costs, and analyzed. The monthly energy intensity plotted on bar charts using Microsoft excel and the results showed that diesel had the highest consumption variation of 3500 kWh/t, electricity 200kWh/t and labor 110 kWh/t. The percentage of energy contribution to processing cost was 33%. In monetary terms, the processing cost per hour of operation showed average value of ₦830. Whereas, the minimum production cost per hour using Tora software showed ₦767. The new product price per ten-kilogram (10kg) unit of sale of maize flour, using break-even analysis, showed ₦2864. The study observed that diesel contributed more to production cost than electricity and labor and therefore, recommended the setting up of an energy monitoring team to monitor procurement and control utilization of diesel to reduce production cost.

Nowadays the attempts to optimize energy efficiency and environmental impact are increasingly present in all activity areas and specifically in manufacturing industry. An innovative approach to achieve these optimizations lies in advanced combination of decision support technologies and Knowledge Management. A benchmarking energy saving tool (decision support tool) was carried out in four (4) different years, 2007 to 2010 in Niger mills limited, located in Calabar to generate energy intensity and energy intensity index of the period. The result obtained for energy intensity in 2007 was 2.30GJ/m3, Energy intensity for 2008 was 2.30GJ/m3, Energy intensity for 2009 was 2.40GJ/m3, and energy intensity for 2010 was 2.30GJ/m3. This result shows that for the period of these four years, that the energy consumed is in an average range of 2.30GJ/m3. That if the productivity increase as the result of increase in production, the energy intensity will increase to 2.40GJ/m3 or there about as the case maybe as a result of increase in production.

One of the main objectives of electricity dispatch centers is to schedule the operation of available generating units to meet the required load demand at minimum operating cost with minimum emission level caused by fossil-based power plants. Finding the right balance between the fuel cost the green gasemissionsis reffered as Combined Economic and Emission Dispatch (CEED) problem which is one of the important optimization problems related the operationmodern power systems. The Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (PSO) is a stochastic optimization technique which is inspired from the social learning of birds or fishes. It is exploited to solve CEED problem. This paper examines the impact of six penalty factors like "Min-Max", "Max-Max", "Min-Min", "Max-Min", "Average" and "Common" price penalty factors for solving CEED problem. The Price Penalty Factor for the CEED is the ratio of fuel cost to emission value. This bi-objective dispatch problem is investigated in the Real West Algeria power network consisting of 22 buses with 7 generators. Results prove capability of PSO in solving CEED problem with various penalty factors and it proves that Min-Max price penalty factor provides the best compromise solution in comparison to the other penalty factors.

Abstract: In this paper, an algorithm to solve the optimal unit commitment problem under deregulated environment has been proposed using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) intelligent technique accounting economic dispatch constraints. In the present electric power market, where renewable energy power plants have been included in the system, there is a lot of unpredictability in the demand and generation. This paper presents an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm (IPSO) for power system unit commitment with the consideration of various constraints. IPSO is an extension of the standard particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) which uses more particles information to control the mutation operation, and is similar to the social society in that a group of leaders could make better decisions. The program was developed in MATLAB and the proposed method implemented on IEEE 14 bus test system.

Optimal unit commitment of a power plant using particle swarm optimization ap...IJECEIAES
Economic load dispatch among generating units is very important for any power plant. In this work, the economic load dispatch was made at Egbin Thermal Power plant supplying a total load of 600MW using six generating units. In carrying out this study, transmission losses were assumed to be included into the load supplied. Also, three different combinations in the form of 6, 5- and 4-units commitment were considered. In each case, the total load was optimally dispatched between committed generating units using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Similarly, the generation cost for each generating unit was determined. For case 1, the six generators were committed and the generation cost is 2,100,685.069$/h. For case 2, five generators were committed and the generation cost is 2,520,861.947$/h. For case 3, four generators were committed and the generation cost is 3,150,621.685$/h. From all considered cases, it was found that, the minimum generation cost was achieved when all six generating units were committed and a total of 420,178.878$/h was saved.

Experimental Investigation of a Household Refrigerator Using Evaporative-Cool...inventy
The objective of this paper was to investigate experimentally the effect of Evaporative-cooled condenser in a household refrigerator. The experiment was done using HCF134a as the refrigerant. The performance of the household refrigerator with air-cooled and Evaporative-cooled condenser was compared for different load conditions. The results indicate that the refrigerator performance had improved when evaporative-cooled condenser was used instead of air-cooled condenser on all load conditions. Evaporativecooled condenser reduced the energy consumption when compared with the air-cooled condenser. There was also an enhancement in coefficient of performance (COP) when evaporative-cooled condenser was used instead of air-cooled condenser. The Evaporative cooled heat exchanger was designed and the system was modified by retrofitting it, instead of the conventional air-cooled condenser by making drop wise condensation using water and forced circulation over the condenser. From the experimental analysis it is observed that the COP of evaporative cooled system increased by 13.44% compared to that of air cooled system. So the overall efficiency and refrigerating effect is increased. In minimum constructional, maintenance and running cost, the system is much useful for domestic purpose. This study also revealed that combining a evaporative cooled system along with conventional water cooled system under the condition that the defrost water obtained from the freezer is used for drop wise condensation over condenser and water cooled condensation of the condenser at the bottom using remaining defrost water would reduce the power consumption, work done and hence further increase in refrigerating effect of the system. The study has shown that such a system is technically feasible and economically viable

Crystallization of L-Glutamic Acid: Mechanism of Heterogeneous β -Form Nuclea...inventy
The mechanism of heterogeneous nucleation of β-form L-glutamic acid was deeply investigated in cooling crystallization. The present study found that the β-form crystals were epitaxially grown on the α-form crystals and they were preferably crystallized on the (011) and (001) surfaces instead of the (111) surfaces of α- form crystals. This result was explained via the molecular simulation. The molecular simulation indicated that the different surfaces of α-form crystals provided different functional groups, resulting in different sites for the heterogeneous nucleation of β-form crystals. Here, the functional group were COO- , C=O and O-H on the (011) and (001) surfaces of α-form crystals, respectively, while it was the NH3 + on the (111) surfaces of α-form crystals. As such, the degree of lattice matching (E) between the β-form crystals and the various surfaces of α- form crystal was distinguished, where the degree of lattice matching (E) between the β-form crystals and the (011), (001) and (111) surfaces of α-form crystal were estimated as 5.30, 5.25 and 2.39, respectively, implying that the (011) and (001) surfaces of α-form crystal were more favorable to generate the heterogeneous nucleation of β-form crystals than the (111) surfaces of α-form crystal

: The model of Kennelly between distance (Dlim) and exhaustion time (tlim) has been applied to the individual performances of 19 elite endurance runners (World-record holders and Olympic winners) from P. Nurmi (1920-1924) to M. Farah (2012) whose individual best performances on several different distances are known. Kennelly’s model (Dlim = k tlim ) can describe the individual performances of elite runners with a high accuracy (errors lower than 2 %). There is a linear relationship between parameters k and exponents of the elite runners and the extreme values correspond to S. Coe (k = 15.8; = 0.851) and E. Zatopek (k = 6.57; = 0.984). Exponent can be considered as a dimensionless index of aerobic endurance which is close to 1 in the best endurance runners. If it is assumed than maximal aerobic speed can be maintained 7 min in elite endurance runners, exponent is equal to the normalized critical speed (critical speed/maximal aerobic speed) computed from exhaustion times equal to 3 and 12.5 min in these runners.
Development and Application of a Failure Monitoring System by Using the Vibra...inventy
In this project, a failure monitoring system is developed by using the vibration and location information of balises in railway signaling. A lot of field equipment in railway are loosening and broken in time period so that they need maintenance due to the vibrations that occur due to high speed trains traffic and railway vehicles impact. Among the field equipment, balises have very important role of communication in terms of transmitting information to trains. In this scope, it is aimed to make maintenance works more efficient, have no delayed trains, detect previously failure location and intervene in failure timely, by detecting and controlling balise cases such as loosening, out of place and the data consistency error that happens because of balise physical state. In this project, the communication is provided with I2C, Modbus RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) and RS485 standards by using Arduino Uno cards and MPU6050 IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensors in laboratory. Each used sensors are in slave mode and computer interface designed with C# is in master mode. Fault situations in the system are checked instant by the interface. (it is assumed to mount the IMU sensor and the Arduino circuit on the balise) it is seen that the interface responds to the sensor movements instant and the system works well in the end of test processes.
The Management of Protected Areas in Serengeti Ecosystem: A Case Study of Iko...inventy
The study assessed the management of protected areas in Serengeti ecosystem using the case of IGGRs. Specifically, the study aimed at identifying the strategies used for natural resources management; examining the impacts of those strategies; examining the hindrances of the identified strategies; and lastly, examining the methods for scaling up the performance of strategies used for natural resources in the study area. The study involved two villages among 31 villages bordering IGGRs where in each village; at least 5% of the households were sampled. Both Primary data and secondary data were collected and analyzed both manually and computer by using SPSS software. The study revealed that, study population ranked IGGRs performance on protection of natural resources, especially on conserving wildlife for future generation and in reducing poaching to be good(53.3%). In addition, the relationship with IGGRs was said to be considerable good (46.7%). In the aspect of reducing poaching, the findings show that poaching has been reduced by 96.2% from 2009 to 2012. Furthermore, 81.4% of respondents said they use different strategies to control loss of natural resources which in turn has considerably improved the relationship between protected areas and the surrounding communities in some of the aspects. Despite of above successes, the study findings has revealed a number of challenges that hinders the full attainment of conservation objectives. Among the challenges are loss of life and properties (86.4%), shortage of water for livestock (68.9%) since water sources such as Grumeti and Rubana rivers are within protected area while the adjacent local communities do not have a free access to those water sources. Other challenges especially on the IGGRs management include insufficient fund base, working facilities and inadequate staffs. Based on the above findings, the study concluded that the strategies used for natural resources management of protected areas in Serengeti ecosystem is fairly sustainable and need functional participatory approaches of local people and other stakeholders in order to bring about a collaborative natural resources management network in the ecosystem. Furthermore, based on the findings above, equity in benefit sharing accrued from natural resource management in protected areas, more financial support to IGGRs and local community, the use of non-lethal deterrents for crop protection, integration of croplivestock production systems, adoption of land use plans as a solution to land conflicts, strengthens of community based conservation (CBC), adoption of modern information technology such as geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing are recommended.
Size distribution and biometric relationships of little tunny Euthynnus allet...inventy
This study is taken from data of commercial fishing of the little tunny, Euthynnus alletteratus (Rafinesque, 1810) caught in the Algerian coast, sampled between november 2011 and april 2016. Data were collected in order to determine size distributions of the population and biometric relationships of species including the size - weight relationships. A total of 601 fish ranged from 30.9 and 103 cm fork length (FL) were observed. The size distribution of Euthynnus alletteratus shows multiple modal values witch the most important cohort corresponds to the age class 2 (42-46 cm). The value of the allometric coefficient (b) of the FL/TW relationship is lower than 3, indicating a negative allometric growth.
Removal of Chromium (VI) From Aqueous Solutions Using Discarded Solanum Tuber...inventy
Industrial polluting effluents containing heavy metals are of serious environmental concern in India. Chromium is frequently used in industries like electroplating, metal finishing, cooling towers, dyes, paints, anodizing and leather tanning and is found as traces in effluents finding their way to natural water bodies causing hazardous toxicity to the health of humans, animals and aquatic lives directly or indirectly. Many methods for the removal of Chromium such as chemical reduction, precipitation, ion exchange, electrochemical reduction, evaporation, reverse osmosis and adsorption using activated carbon etc. have been reported but all being expensive and complicated to operate. Experimental practices reveal that adsorption by agricultural and horticultural wastes are quite simple, inexpensive and efficient method. Agra is famous for Potato farming, a lot of discarded potato waste from cold storages is thrown along road side drains causing solid waste generated which either creates solid waste disposal problem or otherwise it finds way to Yamuna river resulting high BOD and posing a serious threat to the aquatic environment. For developing countries like India adsorption studies using discarded potato (Solanum tuberosum) waste from cold storages (DPWC) a solid waste as low cost adsorbent for Chromium removal was dual beneficial i.e., an ideal solution to these solid wastes disposal problem of Agra and removal of Chromium from tannery effluents and thereby saving aquatic life from Chromium contamination in Yamuna river. Keeping this in view batch experiments were designed to study the feasibility of discarded potato waste from cold storages to remove chromium (VI) from the aqueous solutions. During the study various affecting parameters, such as pH, adsorbent does, initial concentration, temperature, contact time, adsorbent grain size and start up agitation speed were optimized as 5.0, 10-20 g/l, 50 mg/l, 250C, 135 minutes, average size and 80 rpm respectively on chromium removal efficiency. Various Isotherms such as Langmuir, Freundlich, Tempkin also fitted suitably and various corresponding constants determined from these Isotherms favor and support the adsorption. Thermodynamic constants ∆G, ∆H and ∆S were found to be 0.267 KJ/mole, 0.288 KJ/mole and 0.0013 KJ/mole respectively.

Transient flow analysis for horizontal axial upper-wind turbineinventy
This study is to carry out a transient flow field analysis on the condition that the wind turbine is working to generate turbine, the wind turbine operating conditions change over time, Purpose of this study is try to find out the rule from the wind turbine changing over time . In transient analysis, the wind velocity on inlet boundary and rotation speed in the rotor field will change over time, and an analytical process is provided that can be used for future reference. At present, the wind turbine model is designed on the concept of upwind horizontal axis type. The computer engineering software GH Bladed is used to obtain the relationship between the rotor velocity and the wind turbine. Then the ANSYS engineering software is used to calculate the stress and strain distribution in the blades over time. From the analytical result, the relationship between the stress distribution in the blades and the rotor velocity is got to be used as a reference for future wind turbine structural optimization.
Choice of Numerical Integration Method for Wind Time History Analysis of Tall...inventy
Wind tunnel tests are being performed routinely around the world for designing tall buildings but the advent of powerful computational tools will make time-history analysis for wind more common in near future. As the duration of wind storms ranges from tens of minutes to hours while earthquake durations are typically less than a three to four minutes, the choice of a time step size (Δt) for wind studies needs to be much larger both to reduce the computational time and to save disk space. As the error in any numerical solution of the equation of motion is dependent on step size (Δt), careful investigations on the choice of numerical integration methods for wind analyses are necessary. From a wide variety of integration methods available, it was decided to investigate three methods that seem appropriate for 3D-time history analysis of tall buildings for wind. These are modal time history analysis, the Hilber-Hughes-Taylor (HHT) method or α-method with α=- 0.1, and the Newmark method with β=0.25 and γ=0.5 ( i.e., trapezoidal rule). SAP2000, a common structural analysis software tool, and a 64-story structure are used to conduct all the analyses in this paper. A boundary layer wind tunnel (BLWT) pressure time history measured at 120 locations around the building envelope of a similar structure is used for the analyses. Analyses performed with both the HHT and Newmark-method considering P-delta effects show that second order effects have a considerable impact on both displacement and acceleration response. This result shows that it is necessary to account P-delta effect for wind analysis of tall buildings. As the direct integration time history analysis required very large computation times and very large computer physical memory for a wind duration of hours, a modal analysis with reduced stiffness is considered as a good alternative. For that purpose, a non-linear static analysis of the structure with a load combination of 1.0D + 1.0L is performed in SAP2000 and the reduced stiffness of the structure after the analysis is used to conduct an eigenvalue analysis to extract the mode shapes and frequencies of this structure. Then the first 20- modes are used to perform a modal time history analysis for wind load. The result shows that the responses from modal analysis with “20-mode (reduced stiffness)” are comparable with that from the P-Δ analyses of Newmark-method

Electricity demand in Saudi Arabia is steadily increasing as electrical loads grows at a rate of about 7% per year, this represents a high rate by all standards, and largely due to population growth, as well as due to government subsidies which may lead to prices much lower than actual production cost. This growth represents a challenge that requires Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) to invest huge amounts of money every year, for the construction of additional generation capacity along with the reinforcement of transmission network to meet the consumption growth.Also the demand varies frequently throughout the day, causing a waste of a large part of the energy. SEC believes the optimum solution lies in altering the load shape in order to have a better balance between customer’s consumption and SEC’s generation, This paper describes the method for improving the power system reliability by shifting the portion of peak load to off-peak periods This load management scheme can be achieved by lifting the generation during off peak periods and utilizing the stored energy during peak periods. A hybrid set up involving solar and wind energy along with batteries can also be used to store energy and utilize it during peak periods.
Reliability Evaluation of Riyadh System Incorporating Renewable Generationinventy
In this paper, the experience of Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) in analyzing the generation adequacy for Year 2013 is presented. This analysis is conducted by calculating several reliability indices for Riyadh system hourly load during all four seasonal periods. The reliability indices are gauged against the international utility practice. SEC also plans to introduce renewable energy into the network in order to secure the environmental standards and reduce fuel costs of conventional generation. Thus, the reliability improvement due to different integration levels of Solar and Wind generating sources has also been investigated. The capacity value provided by these variable renewable energy sources (VERs) to reliably meet the system load has been calculated using effective load carrying capability (ELCC) technique with a loss of load expectancy metric.

The largest surface area ofcarbonelectrodeof47.25m2 /gis obtainedat 15 ofAr/C2H2gasratio. Meanwhile, theSEMimages show that the disruption of structures with low bond energies and the formation of new onesare taking place when the carbon electrodes are etched at acetylene plasma and placed on carbon electrode. The measurements of capacitance showthat capacitors with affectedelectrodes have about10-15% highercapacity than those not treated with acetyleneplasma.

In general cases the refrigerator could be converted into an air conditioner by attaching a fan. Thus a cooler as well as freezer is obtained in a single set up. The freezer can be converted to an air conditioner when the outside air is allowed to flow beside the cooling coil and is forced outside by an exhaust fan. In this case a mini scale cooler cum freezer using R134a as refrigerant was fabricated and tested In our mini project work we had designed, fabricated and experimentally analysed a mini cooler cum freezer. From the observations and calculations, the results of mini cooler cum freezer are obtained and are compared.
Growth and Magnetic properties of MnGeP2 thin filmsinventy
We have successfully grown MnGeP2 thin films on GaAs (100) substrate. A ferromagnetic transition near 320 K has been observed by temperature dependent magnetization and resistance measurements. Field dependent magnetization experiments have shown that the coercive fields at 5, 250, and 300 K are 3870, 1380 and 155 Oe, respectively. ABSTRACT: Optimization of the cost of energy in the production of local alcoholic beverage (Burukutu) in
the sub Sahara region of Nigeria was carried out with the view conserving energy and maximizing profit. Data
were obtained from six commercially viable Burukutu producing local government areas in Benue State of
Nigeria. Minimization linear programming simplex method was used in evaluating cost of energy used in the
production of the local beverage using TORA software and simplex algorithm written in visual basic language
allocation to constraint with a view to reducing wastages and setting allocation limits within the available
scarce energy resources in the study area. The optimal solutions were obtained after eleven iterations. It was
observed that the minimum (optimal) value of energy required for production of Burukutu was 8.6MJ per

in the two energies was 3086.33MJ, resulting to 99.7%. The optimal value for the cost (minimum) was
N5540.47, yielding a cost reduction of 67%. The result obtained in this work could form working tool for the
Burukutu producers

I. INTRODUCTION
Energy is an integral part of a society and plays a pivotal role in its socio-economic development by
raising the standard of living and the quality of life. The state of economy of industry can be accessed from the
pattern and consumption quality of its energy. Thus, energy is one of the most critical input resources in the
manufacturing industries [1]. Burukutu production relies on energy to carry out the desired operations and
obtain high processing efficiencies. Energy is primarily invested in various forms such as mechanical (human-
labour), chemical (fossil fuel) and thermal (heat). The amount of energy used in Burukutu production is
significantly high. The rising fuel cost and supply limitations plague every sector of Nigerian industry and these
industries are now, more than ever before sensing the need for energy related research to reduce costs through
energy conservation and prevent possible shut down consequent to reduced availability of energy resources[2]

Optimization can be defined as the process of finding the conditions that give the maximum or minimum value
of a function [3]. Optimization has become a common phenomenon in almost all organizations and
establishments. In developed countries managerial decisions are mostly based on the use of optimization
techniques. In a profit seeking organizations, the Board of Directors has many things to tackle which may
include, problem of other competitors in the same business, availability of funds for new capital projects,
reduction of operational cost, high level of output and ultimately maximization of profit as explained by [4].
Optimization therefore is the process of seeking the best value, condition or solution to a problem subject to the
given constraint. In optimization, a given system is described in terms of a mathematical model of the form of
equation 1 [5].

Linear Programming is a mathematical technique for generating and selecting the optimal or the best solution
for a given objective function. It may be defined as a method of optimizing (i.e maximizing or minimizing) a
linear function for a number of constraints stated in the form of linear equations. Let m denote the number of
different kinds of resources that can be used and n denote the number of activities being considered, then, the
mathematical model for the general problem of allocating resources to activities can be formulated as follows in
equations 3, 4, 5, and 6 [6].

The function being maximized is called the objective function. The restrictions
are normally referred to as constraints. The m constraints with function of all variables
on the left hand side are called functional constraints, ≥ 0, j= 1, 2, 3… n,
restrictions are called the non-negativity constraints [7].
In an attempt to address these problems there are two techniques of operation, the quantitative and the
qualitative techniques that may be applied. Quantitative technique which is preferred involves modeling of a
‘real form’ problem into a mathematical form which can be solved to arrive at a solution that would aid the
decision makers. Linear programming (LP) technique is such a quantitative technique which is a widely used
mathematical modeling technique concerned with the efficient allocation of limited resources to known
activities with the objective of meeting the desired goal [8]. A limited number of studies have been reported on
the development of energy use models, [9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14]. The computation of energy use were done using
the spread sheet program on Microsoft Excel while optimization models were developed to minimize the total
energy input into each production line. There is no known report of any work in the literature on the energy cost
requirement in Burukutu production in Nigeria or elsewhere in the world. This study was undertaken to find the
optimal energy cost required for the production of Burukutu.
II. MATERIALS AND METHOD
TORA Optimization System Windows version 2.00, 2007 was used in this study. The
optimization problem is one requiring the determination of the optimal (minimum) value of a given function
called the objective function, subject to a set of stated restrictions or constraints placed on the variables
concerned.
2.1 Development of energy optimization model
The problem was formulated as a linear program problem. Only one program was considered. The
program was based on total energy (T.E.) as the dependent variable and the seven unit operations of Burukutu
production (steeping (St), grinding (Gr), washing (W), mashing (M), filtering (Fl), boiling (B) and re-filtering)
as independent variables. The developed predictive model for production of Burukutu with respect to unit
operations was used as the objective function.

The coefficients of the predictive model were substituted in equation (7) to obtain the minimization linear
program model. The formulated model was used to solve optimization problem in the study. The maximum
available parameters were noted. This include: time, labour, manual energy, thermal energy, and liquid fuel
energy which represent the constraints.

The cost optimization model was developed for the study. The model was based on the minimization of
cost as an objective function and time required per hour for unit operations as decision variables. The cost
required/ hour for each unit operation was used as the coefficient for the objective function. The constraints

III. RESULTS AND ANALYSIS
The problem was solved using Tora Optimization system, windows version 2.00 and simplex algorithm

of Burukutu is presented Table 2 and result of Sensitivity analysis are presented in Table 3. Mean result of
production cost for the entire study is presented in Table 4.
Table 1 shows the energy optimal solution of the problem for the entire study. The optimal solution was
achieved with 11 iterations or pivots and the solution given thus,

This implies that the unit thermal and liquid fuel energy required for the production of Burukutu was
7.84MJ and 1.05MJ respectively. The optimal value of thermal energy was therefore 7.94MJ, while that of
liquid fuel energy was 0.0923MJ. Amount of thermal energy reduction was 3023.00MJ and that of liquid fuel
energy was 65.36MJ of their observed values of 3030.94MJ and 65.45MJ respectively; therefore, total observed
thermal and liquid fuel energy was 3096.39MJ. Total reduction in the two energies was3086.33MJ, resulting to
99.7% The non-zero variables are called basic variables. The contribution of each variable to the
objective function is shown on the last column on the right hand side of the table. Variables 63 , xx contribute
0.92MJ and 7.94 MJ respectively. For every constraint, how much more resource was used from the available

resource capacity represented on (Table 2). As shown under title of ‘slack/surplus’, the entire amount of
available resource were used over constraints 3 and 5. These two constrained 0.00 slacks/ surplus value
indicating that the constraints were binding. Nevertheless, there were surplus resource capacities 176.19, 7.78,
and 20734.77, MJ for constraints 1, 2 and 4 respectively. These constraints are non-binding. The values of
constraints 1, 2, and 4 shows how close it is to satisfy a constraint as an inequality. Since this is a minimization
problem the values are surplus values indicating that the resources were over consumed.
Sensitivity analysis using TORA and the result is given in Table 3 below

intervals of objective function’s coefficient which do not affect the optimal solution are contained in the (Table
3). Change in optimal objective function value per unit increase of a corresponding variable currently at a value
of zero. It is an estimate of how much the objective function will change if a zero-valued variable is made to
become non-zero. Objective Coefficients is any coefficient change that is greater or less than these values will
change the value of the optimum solution variables The reduced cost is a measure showing whether each
individual variable has been exploited economically. For those values with zero values like it means
that the variables have been exploited to the highest potential while those with non- zero values like
indicates that the variation is not exploited and that the associated objective function coefficient
must be adjusted in order for the variable to be just profitable. For a minimization problem of this nature it
means the amount by which the objective function would have to decrease before it would be possible for a
corresponding variable to assume a positive value in the optimal solution. Table 3 shows the range of the Right
Hand Side (RHS) Coefficients that maintains the current basic solution variables: any RHS change that is

greater or less than these values will change the non-zero (basic) variable set. The values of the basic variables
will change.The dual price for constraints 3 and 5 indicates the cost of changing the limitation of . If
either of these limitations is changed by one unit, the total cost will change by 0.05, 0.01, i.e. these are the
shadow prices.

Grinding requires 1.55 hours while boiling requires 16.01 hours to arrive at the optimal solution (minimized cost
of N5, 540.47).The reduced cost shows the amount by which the objective coefficient of the decision variables
has to be improved in order to make their optimal values to be nonzero. The reduced cost for grinding and
boiling operations was zero because their optimal values were nonzero.The surplus for constraint 1 is 23.57
while that of constraint 2 is 1844.38. This shows that less people may be employed for the production of
Burukutu. Similarly, too much energy is expended in the production process. The surplus for constraints 3 and 4
is 0. Thus they are all binding.The dual price associated with a constraint is the improvement in the optimal
value of the objective function per unit increase in the R.H.S. of the constant. The nonzero dual price N255.73
and N46.88 for constraints 3 and 4 implies that an additional liter of liquid fuel will improve the value of the
objective function by N255.73 and additional Kg of wood fuel will improve the value of the objective function
by N46.88. Thus, if the liquid fuel was increased by 2 liters, with all other coefficients in the problem remaining
the same, the locations cost of production would increase by N255.73 from N5540.47.06 to N5796.20.
Since the number of persons required and the energy requirement both have surplus available, the dual prices of
zero shows that additional units of these resources will not improve the value of the objective function.
IV. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
Optimization technique was used to find the optimal solution to the linear model for the production of
Burukutu in order to reduce energy requirement and cost. TORA optimization software was used. It was
observed that the minimum (optimal) value of energy required for production of Burukutu was 8.6MJ per
160.53 kg of Burukutu produced. The optimal value of thermal energy was therefore 7.94MJ, while that of
liquid fuel energy was 0.0923MJ. Amount of thermal energy reduction was 3023.00MJ and that of liquid fuel

thermal and liquid fuel energy was 3096.39MJ. Total reduction in the two energies was3086.33MJ, resulting to
99.7%. The optimal value for the cost (minimum) was N5540.47, yielding a cost reduction of 67%. This
implies that steeping, washing, mashing, filtering and grinding does not require much time. Grinding requires
1.55 hours while boiling requires 16.01 hours to arrive at the optimal solution (minimized cost of N5, 540.47)
The study revealed that wood fuel energy and thermal energy contributed to the energy optimal solution. This
implies that much energy savings could be achieved reducing the energy consumption from boiling and grinding
operations. Optimization of the current process would involve the use of an improved local stove that will
effectively minimize the convective and radiative energy losses to the atmosphere. This simple improvement
would greatly improve boiling efficiency. To optimize the manual energy consumption, it is recommended that
the number of persons involved in the production should be carefully selected based on the work place. Too
much time should not be wasted on a unit operation. It is also recommended that efficient grinding machines
should be used to reduce the high consumption of liquid fuel.
